You should have a special place in there for your kindle to perch.....out of cat reach......you may need a new cover to match the sofa though.

Helen | 3465 comments Stop encouraging me, the ideas will be too big for the tiny room!

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments Miss Miss!!!
You could have one of those electric wall fires for that reading in front of the fire place feeling.

Maybe one of those expensive coffee machines so you don't have to go downstairs for a mug.

Oh and a really good reading lamp.

I feel I maybe thinking about this to much!!

And you need Book related pictures on the walls too. I have some lovely Wedgewood Children's Story plates and plates with children reading books too.

Dispite the rain I had a great day at West Bay, Dorset giving out my copies of Misery at the cafe nr the beach with other book lovers. We did some swapping of other books too, and I only came home with one for the ex! How good is that!?

message 658: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 706 comments I enjoyed giving out some copies of The Time Traveler's Wife, mostly at the school where I used to work. It was really good to catch up with many old friends and colleagues, as well as giving away copies of one of my favourite books!

I am working a shift tonight but it may be an early morning for me so may not get much reading done.

message 663: by Louise (new)

Louise this week was not a good week to discover my wellies had a hole in them..
thankfully I am retaining a sense of humour about the weather and laughing (almost out loud) everytime a big bus goes past me , with an advert declaring "WE ARE IN DROUGHT" and to be careful with water.

Nice-ish day in Liverpool today. I was in Shrewsbury last weekend during the recent monsoon and the river there was really high. If I had a garden, I'd be spraying it full time as a glorification of living oop north. No jobs but lots of water.

Mark (jokerukrs) | 2 comments Angela, sounds great
what's the feeling here about Kindles? I got one for xmas and didnt use it for 3 months, now i have read 3-4 books on it i am totally hooked. I really find it to be one gadget that i take everywhere.

although saying that it still doesnt alter the fact my front room is filled with books on shelves. i dont think it will stop me buying paper books still. i gues it is more of an alternative option for me than a replacement of all things paper.

I'd be interested to know what others think

message 667: by Helen (new)

Helen | 3465 comments I got mine as half a birthday presentlast March and didn't think I'd forsake paperbacks. However, I've only bought one since then and that was because it was part 3 of a 5 part set that wasn't out as an e-book. I love mine.

message 668: by Angela (new)

Angela (bookangel2) | 706 comments I've chopped and changed my mind over the past year or so, because I do love my books and enjoy finding bargains in charity shops etc. It's a present from my husband, who thinks I'll stop piling books up in every available space, but we'll have to wait and see!
One big plus for me is that I think it'll be easier to handle, especially for longer books - I've got arthritis in my wrists and thumbs and sometimes have a little problem!
I certainly don't see it as a replacement for paper books, though. I'll let you know how I get on.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Having two Sony readers and a kindle still hasn't stopped my buying real books at all. I still actually buy more real books.

Helen | 3465 comments All the books I want are cheaper on kindle than in paperback so it's saving me money too.

message 672: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie (stefanie_1973) | 12 comments Off topic general chit chat question of the day:

Do you think that you should really follow your heart and be happy, even if that means not always being responsible?

For instance do you think we all must 'pay our dues' and work hard even though it may make us unhappy or do you think that we only get one life and we should follow our happiness regardless.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments @ Stefanie, you have just one life, it isn't a dress rehearsal. Follow your dreams.

message 674: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie (stefanie_1973) | 12 comments Thanks Lynne, I agree. Just wish doing what I want paid more :-/

Me too!

Helen | 3465 comments Happy Birthday Angela!

I often wonder whether you should follow dreams or work. I'm always busy with school stuff, what's the point of that really? GUess it's how you 'time-manage'.

Thank you Helen. I've had a great couple of days with all of the family - the tea party for 13 was a very noisy affair! Got my Kindle:))) Will have time to set things up tomorrow....and start buying!!
I retired from teaching 3 years ago, so know what you mean about always being busy with school stuff. It was a wonderful job - most of the time - but getting the right balance was so hard.

message 678: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) | 2707 comments Hi Stefanie. Essentially, I agree with Lynne - no point in slogging away at a job you can't stand, no matter what the pay, I think happiness is more important.

That said, it's important to me that I do a good job at work, so I guess working hard makes me happy in a way. Also, since, having people find me reliable, hardworking etc. is also important to me, I reckon that makes me pretty responsible as a rule!

Are you doing what you want at the moment Stefanie? Where do your ambitions lie?

message 679: by Deanne (new)

Same as me Deanne, especially when my patients are younger than me or have young children they will be leaving behind.

Ian | 8 comments I must have upset someone!, I've just found out why I haven't been getting updates, or allowed to post! It seems I was no longer a member here abouts! So I've rejoined.
For Stefanie, as far as I know you've only got the one life, and you can't buy happiness, money just lets you be miserable in comfort! Although I concede you need enough to exist on, too many people live to work, you should work to live!
I mean, look at me! just about surviving, but I'm happy, one of the richest people you'll ever come across. I have everything I need, a little of what I want and a lovely wife,[even if she does nag a bit!] and a family any man would be proud of!
When I had to pack up 'normal' work, a job I loved, it gave me the chance to do something else I'd always wanted to do, become an author, and a successful one. Maybe not in numerical terms of sales but in that those who have read my stuff have turned round and asked for the next one! [almost there Lynne] and thanks for the 5stars for the kindle version of 'RO'
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

message 682: by Ian (new)

Ian | 8 comments Now that's confused me! true my first name is indeed Ian, which for some reason I've never used! Also I was on here as 'Timothy' as I write my trillers/action adventure stuff under the name Timothy Pilgrim. Most people just remember the 'oldgeezer' bit.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

The bizarre axing of valued members continues....first Nick and then Paul aka Timothy aka Ian - you'll have to change the latter old geezer.....can't have two of those called Ian. Keep up the good work on the trillers - I presume your next one will feature some killer budgies.

Happy birthday Angela for Monday...enjoy your kindle, you'll like it more than you think, bet you. Now as as for Stefanie's question....as someone hit by a life limiting disease a few years ago, believe me.....just go out and enjoy your life as money and things are much overrated, particularly if you are getting them via a job that you hate while you are there, and worry about when you are not.

Thank you, Ian, for the birthday wishes. I've had an explore of my new gadget - being able to increase the size of the font is great! Still haven't bought anything new yet but have transfered a couple of things from my laptop onto the kindle.

Thank you, Chris, I had a lovely birthday, with all the family round for tea - and yes, lots of cake AND wine!!! I took a long time over the kindle decision, but am developing a fondness already!

Thank you for the birthday greetings, Nick. Celebrations still haven't finished, as I'm being taken out for a meal next week with some old friends who still work at the school where I worked prior to retirement. Lucky me:)
As I said to Chris, I'm feeling a fondness for my kindle already!

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments My lovely ex is 52 today - he isn't getting a kindle! I got him a set of running shorts and vest for when he does the Avebury to Stonehenge (The Sarsen Trail) cross country Marathon on Sunday. He has won it 5 times in the past and his training has been great so I think he has a good chance to get in the top three this year. And at 52 that won't be bad at all!

message 690: by Louise (new)

Louise ah, you cant beat week (or more) long birthday celebrations!!!!

I was very wary of the kindle too, but bought it for practical reasons, as everytime I went on holiday with my dlsr camera and books, there was no room for actual clothes...

I do love it now, and have to say, sometimes when I am reading in bed, that old fashioned book, it seems so clunky... especially at the mo, and juggling Welsh's Skagboys, a hardback and rather large.

enjoy!

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 292 comments Ian - what happened to that pretty photo of yours?
Commiserations on yesterday’s score, unlucky the goal didn’t count! BUT since we’re a house full of Chelsea blues I was glad it didn't (because that way I didn’t have to listen to the yelling and swearing at the TV if it had counted)!

Michael Parker (michaelparker) | 95 comments I am putting my novel, A COVERT WAR up for giveaway from May 10 - 26. I will also be putting it on a free promotion on Kindle following the giveaway. So why not put your name down for the book? If you don't win, you can download the e-book for nothing once it is on promotion.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments I am enjoying my holiday in north Wales, been site seeing along the walls in Conway and got 4 more bookmarks for my collection and been house hunting too.

I also treated myself to a medieval leather-bound and handmade paper notebook.....not sure what I shall use it for yet.

Chester tomorrow with my daughter - 'to spend some of mum's money' she says!

You have to visit the Knight shop opposite the castle at Conway to buy the book.

Michael Parker (michaelparker) | 95 comments As I posted earlier; my novel A COVERT WAR is listed as a giveaway on Goodreads until May 26. Three copies of the paperback will be given away along with a best- selling novel of a similar genre. Once the promotion is finished, the e-book will be available on Amazon for free. This will last three days. So, if you haven't put your name down, why not do so now? If you don't win the book, you can get the e-version free.
