Margo | 11663 comments Audio can be challenging when it's not well done. Even if the narration is good the editing is critical. Hope the reading works better for you.

Oscar and Lucinda sounds good. What is your book about Hawaii?

message 352: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Margo - my Hawaii book is called The Money Dragon. I bought it several years ago, but never got into reading it. The introduction and first chapter were interesting. That is as far as I have gotten. Oscar and Lucinda sounds good, but the beginning is strange. I hope it gets better.

I enjoyed the short stories. I thought that they were well written with interesting characters. I am still waiting for a copy of the book that the movie was based on.

*The ebook is in the link, because that is what comes up first and what I read, but the hardback book had 177p and the paperback had 208p.

Thanks for putting that kind of detail in your report!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had five days off to read, read, read, and I did not read anything. I listened to a lot of books, but I did not feel like cracking a book cover. I finally pushed myself to open Oscar and Lucinda and read yesterday. I am finally halfway through. It is definitely not what I thought it was going to be, but it seems to be more interesting now but it is slow.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Badge 4, Book 18 of 24

Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
Category: Stone-Obsidian
Task: Read a book set in Hawaii.

Book Link: The Money Dragon
★★★ read Dec 2nd
How It Fits: The story is set in Hawaii.

L. Ah Leong was the Money Dragon of Chinatown. The story tells how he came to Hawaii in the late1980s and goes through the 1920s. It details his life and that of his family. It was an interesting story. The background on Chinese culture and how the Chinese were treated by the white establishment was appaling. It talked a lot about how the land and kingdom of Hawaii was taken away from the Hawaiian people and managed by the American corporations like Doyle and others until the American government took it over as a territory. The Chinese exclusion act of 1882 was still going strong into the late 1920s. Even when the Chinese had become Hawaiian citizens and were born on the islands, they were still considered by US Immigration as non-citizens.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Looking for book titles for the fairy tale retelling for 2019 challenge, I find Ella Enchanted. Reading the summary to find out what it is a retelling of, brings me to "a fairy named Lucinda". Dare I tempt fate?

message 361: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments It's short, so the pain won't last long if you don't like it.

message 362: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - I listened to Prey as an alternate book for Congo. Tim Curry was in the movie "Congo" based on Michael Crichton book of the same name. Unfortunately, the version that my library had was an abridged version. Can I still count it? If you say no, I will not need to jump off the roof, because I also downloaded his book, Timeline, which is "unabridged". My library had no audio or ebook version of Congo, and I do not want to buy it. I own Micro, but I was trying to find an audiobook to listen to when I cannot read.

I am running out of time, and guess what - they are not going to release The Professor and the Mad Man until 2019 - so I need to find another book for Sean Penn. I need something shorter for John Hurt than Captain Corelli’s Mandolin too.

I am almost done with The Hotel New Hampshire for Jody Foster. I do not hate it as much as O & L, but I will be glad to be done with it. It is just strange!

I am enjoying If We Were Villains. I am looking forward to the Shakespeare retelling task for next year.

Janice (jamasc) | 60012 comments Don't go jumping off any bridges, Cherie. We can't have that. I'll accept it. The abridged audiobook on Goodreads, Prey rates it as equivalent to 336 pages.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I loved Timeline You should read it when you have time.

Margo | 11663 comments Oh Cherie, you were unlucky with that book! I'm so glad that you're enjoying If We Were Villains. I though it was a great story and I loved the language used.

No bridges near here, Janice. Jumping off of the roof is kind of an old inside joke among the group I used to work in. Our building only had two floors.

I am currently listening to Timeline, until I find something else to listen to for one of the other tasks that I need to finish - I did not have another audiobook available anyway. I re-checked with my library. They do not have an unabridged version of Prey.

I guess Mystic River is back on my plate for Sean Pen. I had it from my library at one time, and sent it back.

message 367: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I feel better about finishing now. I think I can do it!

I am really enjoying the audiobook for Timeline, so I will keep it for my reporting for Tim Curry.

I am a few pages away from finishing The Hotel New Hampshire and should finish it tonight.

I found a replacement book for Sean Penn and downloaded an ebook The Weight of Water.

I have requested The Oxford Murders, in print for John Hurt. I think I requested Midnight Express too, just in case.

How It Fits: Sean Penn was in the 2000 film
The Weight of Water
based on the book by Anita Shreve.

The book was very intense and I thought, well written. There were two story lines all woven together back and forth. I read the book in epub format, and there were no breaks between sections. It was very disconcerting to be in the past one sentence and the next paragraph, be in the present story. It caught me off guard more than once.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Well, I can't win. It seems that I got my books mixed up. Apparently, I requested Up At the Villa for Sean Penn besides the ebook, which I read and downloaded and already reported.

I am 84 pages into the book that I thought I was reading for John Hurt, and find out it is a Sean Penn movie. (I wanted to see which character he played.)

Midnight Express is waiting at my library for me to pick up tonight, after work. I also have a hold on The Oxford Murders, which is what I really wanted to read, but it has not come in yet.
