Darcia Helle (darciahelle) Good point, Meghan! Now I won't feel at all guilty on my next bookstore trip!

message 52: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Well my reason entering in a bookstore is my father that told me today " we are out of books". He reads realy fast and read almost all my tbr pile.

message 53: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) My excuse is to see if their stock is as good as mine. I always end up buying loads of books because I can't wait till I get home to order them from a distributor. ('Home' is a little island 2,500 miles from the nearest mainland, so beyond normal human endurance to have to wait that long for a book I want to read).

message 54: by Amy (new)

Amy (celesi) 1. I just gave away a box of books, I have space now!
2. Okay, you looked at video games, my turn
3. I need to check in with the manager, see if they're hiring yet.
4. I need to drive the car around the block. You know, avoid that tow notice (not driving a lot right now)
5. I got an email! Stuff's on SALE! That means we can afford it, right?

Yes, I am a sucker for retail marketing. And really, it's just an excuse to buy more books, right?
It's absolute torture walking around a used bookstore without your debit/credit card...it really might NOT be there when you come back!

Now that is original. I like it.

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Used this one today: I'm going to Borders because I have $5 on my Borders Rewards account that expires tomorrow.

El "I woke up today."
"It keeps me off the streets."
"It's the only place my internal GPS knows."

That is my favorite. Or another of mine is - "It's hot outside and BN or Borders is airconditioned. I'll just sit and look at books and won't buy anything." Ya, right! Who am I fooling.

SHOOT! I knew there was something I was supposed to do today. Guess I'll just lose the $5.

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments I have never heard so many wonderful excuses...

I buy books everywhere: grocery stores, Target, Borders and my neighborhood book store = all have different excuses.

Grocery stores: "Well, I might as well pick it up with the groceries and save a trip."

Target:"These books they put on the end caps always turn out to be great books!"

Borders: "It is where the book group meets and while I am here I should get it since it is a trip to come back over here."

Neighborhood Bookstore: "I have to do my part to keep them in business" or "I can't find this book anywhere - can you get it for me?"

It is a disease.....

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments I forgot to post about my bookstore crawl!

In preparation, I mapped a route that would hit as many bookstores as possible in a short area.

We left town at 8:30 am, and pulled into the parking lot of the first book at 10:10. Just after opening. We went to 4 bookstores, then stopped for lunch and a trip to the craft store that was having a sale.

Then we hit 3 more bookstores. We were done at 2:00. So we did some clothes shopping. Hee!

I came home with 18 books, although 2 were for my sister and a couple were for my kids.

We found some awesome little used bookstores. And we came to the conclusion that our town NEEDS a Half Price Books.

I thought about your "crawl" over the week-end and meant to post about it, but got a migraine and slept instead.
Were these used bookstores??? Do you actually still have a used-bookstore area, or was this a long haul?

We used to have what they called Book Row on Adams Ave here in San Diego, but so many have either closed or gone online. Instead of a crawl, it's more like a hop, skip and a jump to the few who are left.

I was thinking of starting a link for people telling about their favorite stores in their cities, so travellers would have a place to go. What do you, and everyone else, think. Would this be a good idea, or are we possessive of our "hidden treasures"?

message 71: by Darcia (new)

Darcia Helle (darciahelle) Roseann, I think a thread of our favorite stores would be fun! I'm willing to share my best finds. I once got over 1,000 books free (yes, free) from Craig's List! So I tell everyone, watch the listings on Craig's List. You just never know what you'll find!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I'd be game for that one!

message 73: by Carol (new)

Carol I need them to share with my friends they bought last time, now it is my turn.

message 74: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 400 comments OK, I've got one and it's even legit. I am taking a Novel Writing class this semester and we HAVE to go to the local Barnes & Noble for a group activity. How cool is that?

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 215 comments I live in a small, very small town and there are no libraries or bookstores. So when we go to the city, I just have to go & yeah I go back home with at least four books.

No library or bookstores. I think you should move and your town should pay for relocation because they are denying you your civil rights. The right to assemble and buy or borrow books. hahahahahahaha.

message 82: by Queen (new)

Queen | 74 comments my excuses (in no particular order)

a coupon, passing by a bookstore, library, or sidewalk sale (it makes no sense not to see what they have), having extra money, it's my birthday, i'm bored, it's raining, cabin fever, it looks nice outside, i'm happy, i'm blue, and most of all is because i want to!

message 83: by Julianne (last edited Sep 03, 2009 05:45PM) (new)

Julianne | 314 comments My Favorite Excuse:

"Sam (our 2 year old) needs a new book." Oooh, I better print out my "to buy" list from GoodReads before I go, in case one of those books is on sale. Oh, they're not on sale? Well, I'll just pick up one or two...or 6 anyway.

And, Dan, I use the $5 Borders Rewards all the time...but how come I spend $50+ every time I go in with my $5 off??? That Borders, they really know what they're doing!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Mine today was - It's hot, lets get out of the house, plus Borders has air conditioning (I think I read that on hear somewhere). So - 6 books later. It's cooler outside now.

Well, first we had to go 90 miles to do this thing. Our town has bookstores, but only a few used bookstores and they are not near each other.

Not all the bookstores were used, but most of them were. Our only criteria was that it couldn't be a bookstore we had easy access to in our town.

The way I routed the plan, there wasn't more than a mile between each store. In our neck of the woods there isn't anything like public transportation to speak of and nobody walks in August if they can help it, so a five mile radius seemed pretty good.
