It does have quite an intriguing premise. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed with it, despite the 3 star rating. I very nearly gave it 2 stars but the last 50 or so pages were really good and saved it somewhat so I bumped it up a star.

I prefer the black cover too. I think it fits better with the theme of the book. Yes, it's a shame I didn't enjoy it but like you say, it's one more book ticked off this challenge. And I enjoyed our buddy read discussion. The comments were more entertaining for me than the book.

Sometimes that is so, huh? I always like Almeta's spoilers and Sandra and Margo can be fun too. At one point - I could have abandoned the book and not cared, but I think besides the awful things that happened in the story, what I really liked was the way the revelations (or in my case - surprises) were so nonchalantly delivered.

Yes, Almeta's comments are always fun to read. I enjoyed everyone else's insights too. It's fun to see how our opinions differ and what each of us takes from the story. I could easily have abandoned the book. If it wasn't for the buddy read, I probably would have done. It was that which pushed me to continue on to the end.

Margo | 11675 comments I like group reads. It's great to see a story through multiple eyes. I am a very reactive reader - I like to share my feelings immeadiately. I have to admit I struggle to read long paragraphs though. Short and snappy works best for me. I also tend to get lost in the middle of my own sentences lol

I like to share my feelings right away too, Margo. There have been so many books I have read on my own that I would have loved to have read and discussed with others, The Toymakers being the most recent.

That's good to hear, Suzanne! 🙂 It's a book that deserves to be more widely read IMO.

It was amazing! Unfortunately I am currently suffering from a huge reading slump which is why it took me so long to finish it. I think Madeline Miller is such a great writer. Both of her books have been 5 star reads for me. I can't wait to see what she writes next. In fact, I am now going to reread The Song of Achilles to see if it helps me to get out of this slump. I'm sure it will.

Thanks! Yes, it is a horrible feeling. I think this has been the longest I have ever been in a reading slump.
