Strike Back question

Is it me or did the timing in the followup books create some confusion. Started book two only to find him back in the Regiment and drinking? I liked it when he had resolved his demons and made contact with his family. Now we go back to the bad days. This was a bit off for a trilogy. Like I said it could be me?
