Just Mercy is outstanding, Joy. Great choice.

Bastard out of Carolina definitely fits the tag. Double up so you have time to work in a demon or two;-)

Jenni Elyse (jenni_elyse) I spent all of my points for demons. Oh well.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8493 comments Well my F2F book clubs have these two titles coming up in January and February, so I'll read them this month

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis
Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood

Christine (myrtilla) | 3 comments I just picked up New York 2140 by Earl Stanley Robinson. I think it fits this tag.

Amy | 13038 comments No one wants to join me for the Undoing Project? Hatoolah? Jolene? Maybe my review will continue pushing this one forward.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I am intrigued, but I know that I'm not going to feel in the mood for non-fiction while on holidays :-D

message 58: by Amy (new)

Amy | 13038 comments Latkes might have gone better with Demons - lol!

message 59: by Joi (new)

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments I voted for society- but I also picked up Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch- so I was hoping demons would win.

message 60: by DianeMP (new)

DianeMP | 534 comments I like tags that are broader in scope with a wide range of the types of books we can read. Social Issues fits the bill perfectly for me. I still have a hard time concentrating long enough to read a paragraph much less an entire book. For those that may not know, I lost my son to cancer two weeks ago. Things are still pretty raw so I'll be taking it page by page for now. I'm not pushing it, but I need something to focus on. Or try to.

Some books I recommend for this topic are:
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
A Year of Wonder by Geraldine Brooks as well
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

I am in shock at the number of books that fit this tag that are on my TBR list. I will try to read as many as I can, so we shall see.
I want to finish The Alienist by Caleb Carr
I also want to finish A Distant Mirror by Barbara Tuckman (societies of the early middle ages and coping with catastrophic disasters)
I Wish to Inform You that Tomorrow We will be Killed with Our Families by Philip Gourevitch (genocide in Rwanda)
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair (Horrific working conditions in the Industrial Revolution and beyond)
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown

I think I'm going to start with No, Is Not Enough: Resisting Trump's Shock Politics and Winning the World We Need. If I read nothing else this month this book is the must read book of the year.

Diane- I am sorry for your loss. It is understandable how difficult it is to concentrate right now. I hope you find a book that holds your attention, or at the very least provides some distraction. Maybe, No is Not Enough, will be just the right book for that goal.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8493 comments Diane - Please accept my condolences on your devastating loss.

It's totally understandable that you'll find it hard to concentrate on books that fit this month's tag. I think Richard Preston's The Wild Trees: A Story of Passion and Daring would fit this month's tag - people working to preserve the world's tallest trees (from effects of logging and global warming).

You can see my review Here .

Anita Pomerantz | 9370 comments Oh Diane. My heart hurts for you. So sorry about your son!

Tessa (FutureAuthor23) | 229 comments Diane I'm so sorry for your loss. How horrible to lose a child. Books are what saved me when I lost my mom. No question.

Charlie Ravioli (charlie_ravioli) | 613 comments I am going to try to read both The Catcher in the Rye and The Force. Hoping I can get thru both and accomplish my 2017 Reading goal by doing so.

message 67: by Amy (new)

Amy | 13038 comments So excited! Catcher in the Rye is soon to be assigned to my highschooler. Can't wait to read it again!

message 68: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9321 comments I'm excited to learn the a book I didn't finish (well, 2 books, but one I already knew would fit) fits this tag. I'd thought so, and it turns out two other people have tagged it this way (but it deserves far more). It's the sadly under-read classic Evelina--I can see why Jane Austen admired some of her books so greatly she quoted two of the titles in a book of hers I plan to re-read read either later this month or next just because of that.

I read Evelina earlier this year, and was happily surprised at how good it was!

Excellent. Are you planning to read her other one or two good novels (not all of her books were good, apparently, or at least the don't stand the test of time).

Cecelia and Camilla are on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list, and I plan on reading at least those.

Thanks, those are the two I'm going to read, but I'm not sure yet when.

I think this would be a great choice for social issues
