30.10 - Brooke TX's Task: By the Numbers

This is a two book task. The books must have a combined total of at least 500 pages.

No books with the main page genre Childrens or Kids may be used for this task. Books with the genres Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, and Manga are allowed.

Book 1: Read a book of your choice.

Book 2: Read a book with a page count that is divisible by each of the digits found in the page count of Book 1 (zeroes excluded).

Examples:
Book 1: Kindred (304 pages)
Book 2: Labyrinth Lost (324 pages);

324/3=108; 324/4=81). 304 + 324 = 628

Book 1: The Golem and the Jinni(484 pages)
Book 2: Why Mermaids Sing(352 pages);

352/4=88; 352/8=44) 484 + 352 = 836

Ed Lehman | 809 comments So....as another example, if I read a book 1 with 222 pages and book 2 with an even number of pages, it will work as long as the total is 500 or more because all even numbers are divisible by 2?

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3940 comments So have i got this right ? 1's can be used? if i chose
Jonathan Livingston Seagull which is 112 pages i would only need a book divisible by 2 as everything is divisible by 1

so The Bricks that Built the Houses 400 pages

in fact this would work both ways round as 112 is divisible by 4

Yes.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments So I think this would work as a combination, but only this way around.

Book 1: We Wish You a Murderous Christmas = 304pg

Book 2: This Old Homicide = 336pg
336/3 = 112; 336/4 = 84; don't need to worry about the 0

Hina (hinaj) | 677 comments Hi Brooke,

quick question, do I use the pages of a kindle edition that I read or use the pages from the mmpb or pb edition if I read the kindle edition per the usual SRC rule. I am guessing I would use the edition I read, but I want to be sure.

Thanks,

I'm going to stick with the overall SRC rules, and say that if you read an ebook, you use the page count for the MMPB.

Lost Planet Airman | 177 comments Just for reference, my Book 1 is Batman: Prodigal at 288 pp. No problems there. Divide by 8.

My Book 2 is an e-book edition of The Windup Girl, so I go the Mass Market PB part of the editions list, and find there's one MMPB -- in Spanish -- and twenty-one PBs. Five of the PBs are in English. Two of the English PBs have page counts divisible by 8.

Sooooooo…
Am I within the rules to default to an English PB since my e-book ain't in Spanish? (I think I am…) Am I further within the rules to pick which PB has a useful number of pages? (Putting on my best wide-eyed innocent expression here: 8-) )

Please see the Rules of the Challenge:

7. When determining page count, you should go by the copy you read- EXCEPT as noted below for ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books. Therefore, if you obtain (own, borrow, check out from the library, etc.) the hardback edition, use the page count for the hardback edition. If you obtain the paperback edition, use that page count.

If you read an ebook, or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

>If there are multiple editions in a format:
From the editions page (click all editions on the main book page)
Set the Format, beginning with Mass Market Paperback
Set the Sort By as "num ratings"
Use the top edition result to determine the page number for ebooks and audiobooks
If there are no editions in MMPB, reset with Paperback and the same sort (num ratings). If there are no paperback editions, reset with Hardcover and the same sort (num ratings). If there are no print editions the ebook or audiobook may not be used for a task requiring a page number

> If the sort results in a Large Type edition at the top omit that book and move to the next record or format.

> If the sort results in an edition in a language other than English the edition SHOULD be used to establish length.

Lost Planet Airman | 177 comments Thanks, and sorry! I should have read first instead of doing it from memory. I forgot the last three paragraphs existed!

Problem solved: only MMPB has 544 pp., which is 8 X 68! Team Mike for the win!

Book One: World of Warcraft Chronicle: Volume 2 202

Correct!

Siobhan J | 409 comments Just to check, because I'm not great at maths and I wanted to make sure this'd actually work

Book 1: Horrorstör (248 pages)
Book 2: What I Did For a Duke (371 pages)

Would that work, as it does all divide but ends up in decimals? Are you looking for something that doesn't end in decimals?

No, they need to be evenly divisible. So if you wanted to use Horrorstör as your book 1, you could read a book 2 with 344 pages, for example:
344/2=172
344/4=86
344/8=43

Siobhan J | 409 comments Thanks for clarifying! I've found another book that'll work for option 2, so all is well. :)
