Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne is the eighth book in the Harry Potter series even though the story follows Albus Potter instead of Harry Potter. The story is based 19 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Like all Harry Potter books it follows the fantasy and adventure genre. Unlike all the other Harry Potters though this one jumps time very fast which makes it a bit confusing to follow with lots of settings. The most obvious setting is Hogwarts which is where Albus goes to school. The other main settings are Harry’s house which is where Albus finds out information about Harry’s past.
The novel Harry Potter and the cursed child is full of twist and turns at every corner especially in the plot. The book moves at a very fast place with drama starting when Albus is put into Slytherin house. Although he is unhappy being in Slytherin he forms a surprising relationship with a boy called Scorpius, who is Draco Malfoys son. When Albus heres a conversation between Harry and Cedric Diggorys dad about how Cedric could have been saved in the graveyard Albus decides to take matters into his hands. But what will he do? As the book continues the boys get their hands on a time turner which evidently sends them back to the past. The boys get taken back in time where they learn that any change to the past can alter the future drastically. The boys travel to a horrible world not once but twice the second time with their dads, and Hermione and Ron to the place where it all began where they learn the truth about one of their friends. With so many twist and turns in the plot it becomes a bit confusing to follow but once you understand what is going on the story makes sense.
The main characters are Albus Potter, Harry Potter, Ron, Hermione, Delphi, Ginny, Draco Malfoy, Scorpius Malfoy, Draco Malfoy and Mr Diggory. My favourite character is Albus Potter because he is like Harry and is daring and risk taking. He does lots of risky things which twist the plot, he is portrayed just like his father was when he was younger. Harry, Ron and Hermione have changed quite a bit since their high school time as they are more stressed. Harry is the head of the Magical Law Enforcement department. Hermione is the Minister of Magic. Ron is the manager of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.
Overall I found the book quite enjoyable as it always kept me on the edge of my seat with twist and turns at every corner. I thought the plot was very interesting and unexpected which made the book more exciting. I would recommend that you read the other Harry Potter books first because then certain events that happen in this book will make more sense. The only thing I disliked about the book was that it was written in a play format which was confusing. I also thought the book was not very descriptive. The age group that I would recommend this book for are people of ages 12 and above. if you like books such as Gabriel’s Clock or the other Harry Potters I am sure you will like this book too. I give it a 4 out of 5 star rating.
