I'm so sorry I didn't reply to this this. I never saw it ☹️
I've read everything except the circle series. The Immortal series was probably my favorite so I'm excited to learn more about Numair.

I'll try to keep an eye out for you
Is this a continuation of any of her other series or worlds where you would/should read those works first?

Great, thanks.
Great, thanks.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I'd expected to have to wait weeks before ebooks would be available somewhere where I could get them, but I happened to have conveniently placed cousins who owe me favours and are coming in a few days so yay?
...all of this is needlessly complicated logistics but whatever. It's really hard to get new books here. //mutters
Started yesterday afternoon. This is my first Pierce book. I like her writing. The story is more middle school than YA, minus the author's obsession with prepubescent morning wood, and definitely rings of an old school style. Plot thus far is simple and easy to follow.

@Scott-Her Song of the Lioness and Immortals series are my fav by her

Will probably start tommorrow.

I liked Protector of the Small too 😁

Numair is not my favourite Tortallan male character. Not like Jonathan (who is admittedly a manipulative little shit but by god you will have to pry him out of my cold dead hands) or Neal or Nawat (both of who have permanent soft spots in my heart). But still. At this point I'll take anyone, and I am fond of him so it's not a loss.
Heh. I just realised there are many Ns in there.
Also let's be honest I am really looking forward to when he gets to Tortall and meets their majesties. Pierce promised early Jonathan-Thayet era politics and I cannot wait for it. Social restructuring is my absolute favourite thing.
Anyway. Off to baby Arram~

...did George decide to write a book under a pseudonym? Idek. I'm obsessing over trivial details this is what happens when you read about a universe you are already familiar with you keep looking for connections.

I'm also interested in seeing him in Tortall with their majesties.

Also, I realise this is for younger kids, but I'm glad to get my hands on a show rather than tell author, because I have been inflicted with the opposite for a while. Arram and Ozorne have little actions building them into characters with distinct layers and philosophies. I'm less sure about Varice, but that could be because I know the endgame for the former two and very little about her. And what I know of her from Immortals (very little) does not compute very well with what we see of her here, which has me a little concerned about how well that will be handled.
I do have to say that my interest level varies very much between sections though. Healing magic and plagues? Oh yes give me MORE please. Arrams lessons? Also yes please, because Pierce, like Bujold, does very well at little details worldbuilding and all the tiny things add up. Miniature student politics in the Imperial University? Eh, not really my thing. I think political intrigue works better with a level of omg how well/badly will this end, which is missing in this case. God politics? I can only assume this one ends with the main Immortals plot point, which is more interesting in terms of aftermaths.
I really wonder how this book would have fared with me had I not already read Immortals. Anyway I still have about 40% of the book left because this has not been a relaxing Sunday. Opinions may yet change.

I went through a "magic school" list and this seems to be Pierce's favorite trope, which she has perfected, I take it. If this turns out to be better than harry potter i will not be surprised.

For me this is probably her weakest book. I recommend trying her other series after this.

I love magic schools, so I definitely will read more of her works.
I'm nearing the end. This will be 3 stars for me, too.
