I read this book about 30 years ago in German, so it can be originally German or English. It belonged to a series where a children's hospital orbited earth, but (spoilers) when the hospital broke orbit, the adults fled and left the patient along with a couple of visitors behind. Ever since the children are trying to return (or maybe just get a better chance at controling their travel).
In the book i read, at the end the kids revisit a planet that is in perpetual winter, and the natives lived in gigantic living snow turtles.
I loved this book then, and very much like to find the series.

No idea what this is Kathie, but I hope someone knows it, and that it's available in English, since I'd love to read it. The premise sounds a bit like Space: 1999 - Aftershock and Awe, except that has the entire moon leaving orbit after a series of man made explosions.

I'm intrigued too-- you said you read it as part of a German series -- was it a series of novels, or one of the Heftroman series, like Perry Rhodan or John Sinclair?

No, it was hard cover, and def for children/ya. I read it in german, but don't remember the name of the author or wether it was translated or not. 😥
