question
Author's use of language

I read this last evening in one sitting and loved it. Although the topicI never lived in a neighborhood like August's, I found it fascinating in the way she allowed the reader into this life and the feelings of teenage girls. The jacket talks of this book being like a poem and I have to agree whole heartedly. It did feel as I was reading poetry that just enveloped the reader in the author's words. The feelings of August were so beautifully explained through her experiences. Haven't read anything like it before.

I agree. It's so lyrical and deeply felt, every word working, that it is a long prose poem. This is one of the most memorable books I've read in ages.
