Oliver Twist Oliver Twist question

What if Oliver Twist, “the boy who asked for more”, had not asked for more? Had he still be thrown out of the orphanage? How would have his life turned out then? (amusing replies will be entertained) :)

He would have ended up being a chimney sweeper probably and he might have ended up cold and hungry. :( Honestly if things hadn't turned out the way they did he would never have gotten such a loving home.

but he did ask for more.

Well, Pink Floyd would have been minus a hit.

He didn't escape - he was apprenticed to a coffin maker (I think), from whom he ran away.

Robert I would still consider it escaping from the treatment he got there!

Thanks for reminding me that I want to reread this story. :o)

Oliver is a smart and spiritful boy. In one way or the other he would have been thrown out of the orphanage. He is a character who does not easily give up on his dreams and wishes. He is such a lovely poor little creature. I wish I was there to adopt him. So I am sure he would be a successful happy man.

There would have been no book then. It's purpose was to illustrate the kinds of social injustice heaped upon the poor by their affluent brothers. Literally, he is persicuted by his own brother and abused by adults acting both inside and outside the law, which he was thrust into by neccessity because he was only a child. Victorian bullies who will trod upon the faces of the unfortunate to elevate themselves. Nothing changes.

First, he would have continued to be the saintly young boy that he was. Second, a coincidence of some other description would have saved him from peril. This is the Dickens universe, after all.

That's an interesting question that I've thought about before. I think if he hadn't asked for more, the entire novel wouldn't have had much of a place to go. He wouldn't have had another way to really stand out, which is why that one action really matters.

A. It was a workhouse, not an orphanage.
B. He wasn't thrown out. He escaped.
