Travis I have never read this book or any other Old Republic era novel. I just finished the first three chapters and I am loving this one.

The strongest aspect to me so far is the discussion about the very nature of the Force. Even more interesting because most of the more profound statements come from a Sith, Darth Malgus. From a discussion Malgus has with Eleena in chapter 1:
"the fundamental nature of the Force, that it is conflict. That a light side and a dark side exist is proof of this."
"the survivors of the conflict come to understand the Force more deeply. Their understanding evolves. That is purpose enough."
"Conflict drives a more perfect understanding of the Force. The Empire expands and creates conflict. In that regard, the Empire is an instrument of the Force. You see? The Jedi do not understand this. They use the Force to repress themselves and others, to enforce their version of tolerance, harmony. They are fools."

Wow, that is some of the most striking thoughts about the Force I've ever read. The concept of two opposing forces actually being complementary recalls the yin and yang, or even the adage that you can't recognize the good without comparing it to the bad. The idea of conflict and destruction leading to enlightenment reminds me of Ouroboros. And the combination of the concepts reminds me of the Hindu god Shiva.

What other thoughts do people have about the dual nature of the Force?

Joshua Luz | 23 comments I do like how it gives an insight into the mind of someone who follows the dark side, the way they justify their actions and their beliefs in its destructive nature. The old idea that no villain believes them to be so and so far I think that's well demonstrated with Malgus' thoughts.

This is one of the aspects I absolutely love about the old republic era. I love diving into the force and the dynamic between the light and dark.

Jason Duran | 37 comments One thing I will say is that in Paul Kemp books, The dark side is dark and the light side is grey. His villains are very evil and his heroes are conflicted at best.

Joshua Luz | 23 comments What do they call that on TV Tropes? Black and Grey Morality or something?

I personally feel that the dark and grey is more realistic especially in the old republic era.

Darren | 24 comments Kemp has created some fascinating and deep character motivations here. So many times the villain has been motivated by revenge or a thirst for power. Malgus is driven by purpose, passion and a search for enlightenment just like many Jedi however he uses the dark side of the force to achieve this.

Travis And Jedi Aryn is the one motivated by revenge to kill the bad guy. Interesting twist on both sides.
