I actually love this one better than the first one! It's sooooo good and sad and gooood!

Nothing like a six hour journey to help finish a book in one sitting.

Mariller's prose is as wonderful as ever, but I have to admit I liked this book a little less than the first.

General Notes;

1. I feel like Liadan is what Sorcha would have grown to be if her traumatic experiences happened a little later in life. She's like a more self-possessed Sorcha.

2. Poor Bran. What a shitty life for a kid.

3. Maybe it was because Liadan was so self-possessed that I did not feel like I had to worry about her, but I was less teary this time around. She's not as powerless as Sorcha was, and it shows.

4. But the whole mess with Niamh. Oh my god. THAT had me in tears. And in fury, to be honest. I was not particularly fond of Niamh, but the way her own family treated her was heartbreaking. At least tell the kid why you were so upset, and why that was a big deal.

5. Red strangles the asshole husband. Finally, a point for Team Vengeance. That was so satisfying.

6. I've read enough good romance novels that the romance between the traumatized badass and the strong willed woman follows a predictable storyline. Nothing new here. That said, I grew fond of Liadan and Bran.

7. The painted men are the best. The BEST. I could read a whole book just about them and their backstories and stuff.

8. I'm not sure what I feel about the whole "you are what your parents make you" theme that runs throughout the book. It seems- unforgiving.

9. Niamh. Poor Nimah. I know I mentioned this already but I get really upset about betrayals by loved ones that could have been so easily avoided. And, like Liadan, I was fairly uncertain if Liam (or Sean) would care enough about her to potentially set aside the alliance. It disturbed me, and it angered me and I was nowhere near as upset as I thought I might be when Liam died.

I finally started a few minutes ago... there's quite a list of Fae and such at the start... I didn't pay much attention to it all... I'll get the salient points as we go...

After all the talk of how slow the first audiobook was, I'm giving this one a go at increased speed... the iBooks options are 0.75x, 1.0x, 1.25x, 1.5x, and 2.0x...

I tried all of them for a second to see how they sound... 1.5x is approaching chipmunky I think... even at 1.25x I'm left wondering about the narrator's breathing... even tho it's the program going faster, not the narrator herself...

I probably couldn't listen at increased speed at work, but at home when I'm just playing a Bejewel-clone RPG, it's not too bad... I assume it's even easier for the people (like Melissa, right?) who listen and follow along in their book/Kindle to listen at increased speeds...

Edit: I guess it's just something you get used to after awhile... I'm running it on 1.5x now...

So far, I find it interesting listening to an MC that knows the events of the first book, and fully expects something to happen to this next generation, as well...
