Have any of you read this book or any other book from this series? If so, would I be totally lost if I started reading this book without having read any of the others?

yes, and yes. This book starts off in the second part of a cliffhanger following something like 5 different character movements and you will be utterly lost. You can start with Drums of Autumn, perhaps, since it introduces a new major story thread, but it's best to begin at the beginning so you understand who the characters are. This is character-driven fiction and knowing the players is key. Your local library will probably have them all.

In this series, begin at the beginning. Every book is worth it.

Thanks guys! I'm definitely interested in starting from book #1 after reading more summaries of the series. The tv show that's coming out this fall for the series looks awesome too! Hopefully I can finish reading them in time :)

This series is brilliant - a timeless classic. An absolute must for avid book readers !

Definitely start with Outlander! You will miss out on so much if you don't. It may take a while to get through them before you get to Written in My Own Hearts Blood but you will love every moment.
