Heather | 8548 comments Wow, I am BEHIND!!! I have been 'missing' for a few, I'm sorry.
So, it's getting to the end of the year!
Those of us who made a challenge for ourselves...how are we doing?

How many of you have exceeded your challenge by now? I'm sure Luis has!

I'm not sure if I have or not. I've been reading a lot lately, but several books (again) and one I wanted to pick up today I misplaced. So I'll have to count.

What are your chances of achievement in a one more month and a half???

Ruth Right now my challenge is just to get through each day.

Ruth, I popped up to open this thread and then went missing again and just now saw your post.
I understand your 'challenge', especially in my life these days and I want to say GOOD LUCK to both or all of us attempting to get through each day.
Thank you for taking a moment to post your thoughts, Ruth.

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments I prefer to read books without the constaint that I am fulfilling a resolution.

Anatz | 1 comments I set a small goal of 15 books for the year since I did not want it to become a chore and take my enjoyment of reading away. Thus far I've read 18 books; there's a chance I might even reach 20 before the year ends :)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Anya, that´s exactly why I refuse to make this type of resolution. I do recognize that it is not the same for most people and they need the incentive to read more. As I read between 20 and 50 books a year, I find that sufficient if not over consumption.

The only reading goals I have are to read HOPSCOTCH by Julio Cortazar someday as well as Proust, both of which would be big challenges. And yes, I plan on reading the Old Man in the Sea in Spanish.

I, too, set the goal of 15 books this year, I haven't found that it takes my enjoyment of reading away, though. I don't think about the goal while reading nor picking out my next book. Heaven knows one of the books I read, with my limited time, took a good 2 months it was so long!

But something Georffrey said is true for me. I have to have a goal and I find that I read more. But I'm not sure if the books I read would be the ones I would be reading anyway, nor do I think I read them just to reach a goal. (which so far I haven't reached) I'm behind on my reading challenge but have enjoyed the books I've read this year.

Ruth I normally read 50-60 books a year, but the last two years have been stress-filled difficult years. I doubt I’ve read more than 5 or 6. Things are picking up, though, as I gradually return to normal.

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Congrats Ruth. I achieved that several years ago but have become bogged down in my reading. It has taken me a month to finish Joyce Carey´s THE HORSES´MOUTH because the narrator´s speech was studded with London slang.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments I made a goal of 120 books this year, because I wanted to cut down on numbers and read better books rather than more. I'm up to 145 so that didn't work exactly.

My personal goal was to read 40 art related books, I have 36 and am reading another right now. I won't make the 40 but I am still pretty content with that result. It has been an amazing art education year.

Incidentally, no one should envy my reading speed: While I do read fast, I don't do much reading at work, which can put you off reading recreationally. For the rest, It has a lot to do with a sleep disorder.

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Deborah, were you trained in speed reading?

Wow! I am impressed! Though you didn't actually achieve 40 art-related books this year, that is quite a goal and you say you've learned a lot! You are doing, and have done great!

I'm glad your life is less stressful (I think that's what you were insinuating) so that you can read more. But the fact that your life is getting more back to normal is the great thing. I'm happy for you, and congratulate you on what you have read!

Nope, I have been curious about speed reading. Once I picked up something about it and started to read up on the technique. Based on what I read, I may have developed some of the habits on my own. I am a bit slower at non-fiction or technical texts.
