M | 2 comments The book I’m looking for is an adult fiction/romance. I believe the paperback had a red cover and it came out or at least I read it in the late 90s early 2000s. The woman inherited land and an old hotel from her estranged biological mother who had just married the widowed owner only to get into a car accident with her husband on the way back from the honeymoon and both die.

The hotel is on this very beautiful property with several acres of woods/mountains. Woman originally is going to sign it over to the children (son and daughter), but the son is super cold, asking her what amount of money it will take to get her out of there. She thinks he’s just planning to sell to develop, so she changes her mind and refuses to sell her interest to him. They’re both super suspicious of the other’s intentions. Son thought woman’s mom was a gold digger scamming his father.

Woman remembers there being a porch swing on the hotel porch, so there’s also a mystery about why she was there.

Spoilers ahead:
The woman is called to her mother’s bedside as she was dying after the accident. The mom told the woman that Rosie (deceased hotel owner who was married to mom’s then current husband - not 100% on the name) died. Woman thought this was her mother trying to justify marrying the man but they later find out her mom said Rosie lied, not Rosie died. There was some question as to whether her mom had slept with Rosie’s husband before, but I’m pretty sure the relationship wasn’t until after Rosie died. The lie was in reference to something Rosie claimed way back when woman was a very young child. It had something to do with getting the woman and/or her mom away from an abusive father. Woman didn’t know her father growing up, and he actually finds her or she finds him, they connect in a dinner and he later comes back to the hotel and tries to kill her. Main male character manages to defuse the situation and save her.

I believe it was questionable whether the guy was actually her father. She wasn’t there as a foster kid, like the children originally believed. Her mom was friends with their dad, and he and his wife were helping her hide from abusive husband.

The hotel owners’ son is revealed to be extremely rich (but doesn’t really care about the money). He makes really beautiful high quality clocks that woman’s adoptive mom loved (adoptive mom had died years before). I believe it may have been that Rosie lied about something that got woman’s mom arrested and woman put into the foster system.

Son had been burned by a past relationship where the woman only pretended to be interested in his passions (outdoor guy, had a cabin in the woods in the property). So he was suspicious of woman loving the outdoors and his cabin (I think it made him suspicious), but his sister was pushing for the relationship. There was also something about pie (woman made amazing pie), loving the outdoors, and needing to have a certain number of children to be his “perfect woman” - something he and his sister had come up with as kids because their parents wanted a certain number of grandkids.

They eventually get married, solve the myself, etc. The book ends with an epilogue I believe where he says something about how many more kids they’ll have the “fun way” vs how many they’ll adopt. She teased him about calling it the fun way, and agreed to at least a couple more the fun way.

That pretty much what I remember. I believe it was either set in the northern United States (I believe there was regular snow in their universe) or possibly Canada.

I’ve tried Googling phrases and have had no luck. Thanks in advance for your help!
