Globetrotter was not really a challenge but a selection. Kyle ran this and he put up 4 selections per month for a different country. I think he gave 2 points for a book. I have the list from 2013 for the whole year. If you want me to send you the list I can. I also bet John has a good list since he ran Around the World Challenge by country.

Yes, Diane, that would be great. You can send me a private message if you like. Kyle has been gone so spose he doesn’t want to do it again. Were you the one that wanted to see it come back?

I am going to suggest a TBR challenge. My idea:
Each person submits a list of 24 TBR 1001 books in numbered list. Each month we randomly select a number and participants read the book that corresponds to that number on their list.

I updated intro. If we get enough suggestions, we can have a vote on which challenges/events to play next year.

I remember it as just two selections.

No, I was thinking that with 24 possibilities you wouldn’t know which books would get picked bc not all would get selected.

Loving this!

I like Jen’s idea. I know Litsy is doing their LitsyAtoZ Challenge again this year with all classics, I’ve been playing with the idea of pulling them all from the 1001 list. I’d say I could use the same list for both, but with one I’d be trying to read them all, with the other just half. So maybe Jen’s idea would be the extra’s that just happen to be selected.
If you aren’t familiar with the Litsy Challenge, it’s pick a book from each letter of the alphabet, either title starting with or author’s last name.

Now, this is a good idea!

If you have them all in your TBR list, you can determine original dates published and page numbers. The page numbers vary, however, depending on the edition you have saved in your tbr. I think the 1001 app will also do this, although the page counts are not necessarily accurate.

Yep, that’s the same trouble I have with the publication dates, Goodreads gives me the publication of my edition which since I rarely have any first editions is almost always later than the true original publication date. I wish their database had both fields, a this edition published and an originally published date. Book lovers can dream, right.

Yes! The app is easier to sort through
Yes! The app is easier to sort through
The app has the publication date with a couple of errors here and there.
The app rounds the pages off to the nears 100/50 pages so it will give you a ball park. And again there are some frank errors. After all the app was created by Arukiyomi (Arukiyomi.com) and he ended up with quite a legal hassle with the publishers over the app.He also created the spreadsheet which you can purchase at his website. It is pretty handy. Goodreads does list the original publication date along side the edition publication, if you look, its in very light greyish font.

I have a spreadsheet that I got from Kyle, who may have left before you joined the group, I have added to it. It includes dates of publication, which seems pretty accurate and page length, which is not perfect, but generally better than the app, which is sometimes off by a lot. Of course, as Diane noted, page length varies by edition, sometimes considerably so. The spreadsheet is, of course, completely searchable and sortable.
Send me a PM with your email address and I can send you a copy of my current version. There is also a version on the group's cloud site, though I had trouble with that and stopped using it, so someone else would have to direct you to it.

Thank you very much!

GoodReads has all that information, it is just hidden behind a 'settings' option on top of your bookshelf (if you go to your bookshelf on the web page). You can sort by publication date, edition date, page number and a lot of other things.

That works for my own shelves, but not for the group shelf. Unless the admins can change those settings?

Same here, it works on my made shelves, but not the group shelves or the listopia lists, those are all locked in some way that blocks off those sortable options.

I’m not sure we can change that but I will take a look. We do lock the bookshelf because unlike other groups our bookshelf should not change so we don’t want anyone to be able to change the list on the bookshelf accidentally or intentionally. But I can see if we can sort them by date. Let me play around with it and see although I’m currently at a conference now so have limited internet access for next few days

I can change the sorting, but not the choice of fields visible. It would be great if we could see the original publication date and the page numbers.

Thank you so much for trying ladies, and I’m so sorry for diverting this thread into an unintentional tangent. I really didn’t mean to monopolize it with my question.
If you’re going to change the sorting at all on the group bookshelf, I’d suggest by author or title so titles are easier to find, and yes, it’s a shame that Goodreads isn’t quite as user friendly as it could be. Oh well.

I realize it is a big undertaking, but you can create a list like this by saving all 1305 books to your own tbr under a specific folder. For example, I have all of the books saved to my tbr in my "1001" folder so I am able to do these searches myself through "My Books" (you can find "My Books" at the top of the screen next to the "Home" link). When I select my "1001" folder in "My Books", I can see how they currently are being sorted by looking for the heading with the triangle symbol next to it. This can easily be changed by clicking on any of the other headings. By clicking on "num pages" at the top of my list, I can sort them by length (of course this is only as accurate as the page counts of the editions I have personally saved to by list). If I want to search by publication date, I can add this to my headings by clicking on "settings", at the top of the list and selecting "date pub" from the menu. It will now appear among the headings at the top of my list of books. Clicking on "date pub" will sort them by date.

Thank you John, I received your email and the spreadsheet, just what I needed. Thank you so much.
And according to the list, just in case anyone else was interested in the answer after my question ran away with the thread, there are 36 on the list of 1001 books (over the different list books), that fall in at under 100 pages.
Any other challenges you would like? Please let us know.
We'll gather a list and vote on choices.
