Debra Pate | 8 comments I am looking for a book which I read back in the 1980's maybe was about global warming but was fictional. Described red tides before we had ever actually seen such an event. What I remember most was the end of the book. People could only walk on the surface of earth with Respirators on, part of the earth was a dried up desert land and the rest over grown with extremely large plants (jungle like) with extra large insects that view humans as a snack.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe The Drowned World?

"First published in 1962, J.G. Ballard's mesmerizing and ferociously prescient novel imagines a terrifying future in which solar radiation and global warming have melted the ice caps and Triassic-era jungles have overrun a submerged and tropical London. Set during the year 2145, the novel follows biologist Dr. Robert Kerans and his team of scientists as they confront a surreal cityscape populated by giant iguanas, albino alligators, and endless swarms of malarial insects."

The novel begins with a bunch of scientists at a scientific station; the world is seriously flooded and whole cities are deep underwater. It's dangerously hot. The only place it's safe to live is further north, so the scientists are getting ready to abandon their station which is in the city that used to be London. But some of the scientists don't want to leave. There's a plotline about a rogue group of men who come in and disrupt the scientists. Then at the end of the book one of the scientists gets a death wish and decides to go south instead of north and it gets hotter and hotter.

Debra Pate | 8 comments It is not "The Drowned World", but it could be "The Drought". The cover of The Drought looks familiar, but the section available to read on Amazon does not sound familiar. While reading that section though I was able to remember more about the original book I read.

In the original book earth is still normal, a scientists is out in a river or ocean taking samples of the water and runs a crossed a section of water that is red which he finds disturbing....I know he also has a daughter who I believe works for some Oceanic facility or as a marine biologist. They are the two toward the end of the book that leave the underworld to a dry desert landscape and travel toward the thick over grown jungle seeking water I think.

Perhaps I will see if "The Drought" can be found are the local library. I should be able to determine if it is the correct book if I have a chance to skim the contents.

Read through some of the reviews here - there are many and they go into some detail. It does look like one of the covers has a "red tide" on it.
