Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments Have you ever been in a reading slump, and what caused it? I️ just came out of a terribly long reading slump that lasted almost two years.

Char | 17472 comments I've never been able to figure out what causes reading slumps for me. I've also never been in one that lasted more than a month or two. Thank goodness!

Alondra Miller | 2552 comments This past year. I just haven't felt like reading as much as normal. I think mine may be due to the amount of books I pressured myself into reading (90).

I normally challenge myself to 60 - 65; and waddle through my reads and take my time.

I must say, that I have read some really great books this year, though.

I haven't been through a slump for a while. I do go through some days where I'm just too busy to read (oh the horror!!) and I find myself thinking of my books and wanting to sit down for a few minutes with them.

Laurie (barksbooks) (barklesswagmore) | 1471 comments I get into slumps a few times a year. I don't know if it's seasonal, my mood or just me in general. It usually happens when I commit to reading too many books for review or sign up for a challenge. I need to stop doing those things! But when I am in a slump, I find it best to switch genres or do something else like watch movies or crafting but I usually still listen to audiobooks. Eventually I miss reading and come back to it in a week or so. Two year is a very long time. I'm glad you were able to come out of it.

Marie | 4031 comments I was in a reading slump almost two years ago where I didn't read any books for 4 months. I just wanted to do other things and I just had a hard time sitting down with a book. But thank goodness I am out of that hole! Ever since I have become more involved on GR and here on HA, I have found myself wanting to just read all the time. Lately I have even been reading two or three books at a time.

IMO I think everyone goes through reading slumps because of what is going on in the world around them and sometimes people just don't have the time to just sit down, relax, and read.

Mixofsunandcloud | 538 comments I think other than crap that just happens, most of my slumps have come from forcing myself to keep reading stuff I don't want to. I'm more willing than I used to be to give up on a book, so these aren't as bad as they used to be.

Also, I make a point of reading a chapter of something before bed every night, an actual physical book, so I'm never in a total drought.

Tyler Gray (wickedjr89) | 936 comments Since I really started being an avid reader (there was years before that that I didn't read at all) I seem to get into reading slumps in the summer...and in the middle of winter in February. February is actually my birthday month and I love summer. I'm not sure why my reading slows down so much then and I don't feel like reading but it's something i've noticed. Maybe I just get burnt out and have ups and downs. I have other hobbies besides reading and sometimes I just want to do those instead, i'll come back to reading eventually. :)

The other cause of a reading slump for me is forcing myself to continue with a book I am not enjoying at all, so i've learned when I reach a certain point, I just need to DNF and move on. I try to give books a good shot but sometimes life is too short to be reading books you're not enjoying and it's time to dnf. If I push myself to continue reading anyway i'll end up in a slump from it.

Erin (ems84) | 9086 comments I haven't had a really bad reading slump in a number of years but there have been some minor ones, from time to time, where I am in a rut with books I am not really enjoying. I have been trying to focus more on getting books I actually want to read instead of getting ones I feel I should read.

Anita (neet413) | 818 comments Just recently. The last book I read, finished last week, was Son of the Black Sword . Love the author, and it was an epic story, but for some reason it took me 2 months to get through it's just over 500 pages.

Ken B | 6810 comments I am in the middle of a horrible slump. I know the cause, just can't shake it. Very active 4 year old boy, an 8 month old boy, new position at the job and trying to build a new house. Yeah...my world is nuts right now.

Well yeah, that'll do it Ken! Good luck on the new house!

Wow! Good luck with the new position and the house.

sonya marie madden | 926 comments I once didn't read for a few days a few weeks ago. I didn't know what to read.

Jeff | 20 comments I went years without reading a book, from about 23 - 25. I was slam busy all the time with work and then fiance. Just never even thought about it. I believe the first book I read when I returned to the hobby/joy was a Sherlock Holmes collection, or possibly Lovecraft -can't recall which .

Ami Morrison | 238 comments I’ve always have loved reading....

But, I didn’t read anything for pleasure during my 4 years of high school. I had a lot of learning disabilities , adhd and dyslexia, and it made school a real struggle. I was so busy just trying not to drown in school work I didn’t understand, that I ended up feeling too overwhelmed and burned out for pretty much all of my passions or hobbies.

Also, in the early 2000’s, I had probably a 3 year break from reading while I focused just on my job (artist). I was pretty hyper focused on what I was drawing or painting, that I don’t think I read anything those 3 years. It was total tunnel vision. I barely remember anything from those years that wasn’t art related.

Around 2006-7 is when I got back in to reading a lot. I have been pretty consistently reading. But. This last January I felt like I was in a month long slump. I was sick almost the whole month so I was having trouble reading because of that, and then the few books I did pick up ended up being not very good and it ended up slowing me down until I finally just quit the book before I ended up flinging it out the window. It was my most recent slump.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 3047 comments IHmm let's see...so far I'm still reading Skin Medicine and I started reading it last January so that's over a year. So currently a year, although I think my longest slump was 4 years, not a big reader.

message 18: by Red (new)

Red Lace Reviews (redlace) | 42 comments I've had many a slump, and they occur every year. There's never been an entire year where I've consistently read. As for what causes it... I just think it's my mood, and the pressure I put upon myself to give in-depth reviews to absolutely everything I read. I've changed things around this year, and it's been really helping so far. Hopefully I can keep it up!

Christopher Williams (thewrongwriter) | 48 comments I had a forced reading slump just last week. Why? I had a concussion! Had to spend hours just lying in bed, trying not to think. Couldn't read at all. I moved my books out of sight so I wouldn't get tempted anyway.

Before that, the last reading slump I had was last Spring. Girlfriend got hit by a car and fractured her leg. I spent a lot of my time helping her get around. Hmmm, sensing a pattern here.

Glad you (and your girlfriend) are OK, Christopher. Hope nothing like that stops you from reading again.
