What I have read so far, the author Peter Robb is telling the reader about his experience in Brazil in 1985 when the military dictatorship was head of government in Brazil. Slavery was still being practiced and poverty was widespread throughout the country. In the first couple of pages, he describes the moment when a poor black Brazilian man came up to him with a knife, demanding him to give up all of his valuables to him or he would kill him. This moment that he shared was just a glimpse of what was going on in Brazil. As the book goes on, he ask question like, "Why is Brazil like this?" and "What is it going to take to make Brazil prosperous?" During his time in Brazil, he investigates the inequities of the Brazilian culture and structure.
