Shadowfires was first published in 1987 under the pen name Leigh Nichols. Shadowfires was Leigh Nichols' fifth and final novel, this was Dean writing using a woman's name. Leigh's previous books include: The Key to Midnight (1979), The Eyes of Darkness (1981), The House of Thunder (1982) and The Servants of Twilight (1984).

The correct titles is one word "Shadowfires" but is sometimes mistakenly referred to with two words "Shadow Fires".
