I'm through Chapter two and I've been delightedly surprised so far :D
- Didn't expect the perspective shift at Ch. 3 but I'm looking forward to it
- I really like Ash so far; I love his archetype and I was pulled right into his story.
- Have had zero problems falling into the world even though I haven't read any other books by the author. Everything has built really naturally, need-to-know so we're not overwhelmed with exposition, but so far she's not assuming we know a whole lot.
Truthfully, as much as I love fantasy, and it's traditionally my favorite genre, I've been feeling really burned out on YA fantasy because it all has started to run together and feel the same. High fantasy in particular. Caraval being the notable exception :) But this one promises to be a standout in the tradition of Tamora Pierce and Mercedes Lackey, so I'm stoked to read the rest of it.

Whoa... it's like reading a completely different story and man, that was INTENSE. I was not expecting... well, any of that. Reminded me a little of the Hunger Games except Maggi wasn't (view spoiler)
King needs to die. Just sayin'

I agree! What the King did was just ruthless :(

"Burn it to the ground""
I wouldnt be surprised if she kept that promise. She was very eager.

So I'm reading like... five books right now and this one is probably my favorite, but I haven't had time to go forward today. I'll keep talking though as I get to it because I'm really excited to find out what happens.

I really REALLY like this book so far, but for some reason I've been reading it very slowly. Heaven knows why, it certainly doesn't drag even a little. With this much action in the first eleven chapters, I don't even know what all she'll do in a book this size.
I will say that I kind of wish the chapters would start with a common date system. The time jumps have been a little confusing. I think I've sorted it out, but I would have liked to see some sort of timestamp to make it easier to keep track.
Is it just me or does anyone else kind of nerd out happily that (view spoiler)
The scene where we take Lila's perspective threw me at first. I wasn't entirely sure what was going on for a while, and I will say that I still have an awful lot of questions about Lila and how she knows everything she seems to know. Apparently Ash misjudged her more than a little and I'm wondering who sent her.
And you're right, Courtney... I didn't even catch where Jenna got her boy moniker from.

Chapter 8: (view spoiler)
Chapter 18: (view spoiler)
Chapter 25: (view spoiler)
Chapter 40: (view spoiler)

I'd be up for book two but not until closer to the end of the month -- packed full right now.

This section was a little harder for me -- I don't know if it's because I'm reading too many books and I'm getting confused about who is what is which or if it's because I'm not already familiar with the Seven Realms, but I definitely got mixed up in some spots, and I've had trouble keeping aaaaallll the characters straight.
I did absolutely love that (view spoiler)
Mostly I just want to curl up with this book for fun and ignore everything else :) If she ends as well as she begins, Chima has a new fan.

This was a little terrifying, wasn't it? I thought so. Also if I were Destin, I'd be thinking, (view spoiler)

Oh and Just For the Record -- this is so much better than Throne of Glass. (I kind of hated that book)

Lol I only said that because of the (view spoiler)

I got confused and some parts as well so maybe it is because we havent read the other series, but I was able to figure it out as the story went on.

A blood-based curse.
Abandoned at birth, Jenna Bandelow was told the mysterious magemark on the back of her neck would make her a target. But when the King’s Guard launches a relentless search for a girl with a mark like hers, Jenna assumes that it has more to do with her role as a saboteur than any birth-based curse. Though Jenna doesn’t know why she’s being hunted, she knows that she can’t get caught.
Destiny’s fiery hand.
Eventually, Ash’s and Jenna’s paths will collide in Arden. Thrown together by chance and joined by their hatred of the king, they will come to rescue each other in ways they cannot yet imagine.
Set in the world of the acclaimed Seven Realms series a generation later, this is a thrilling story of dark magic, chilling threats, and two unforgettable characters walking a knife-sharp line between life and death.
