Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments I've started a series of blog posts on indie authors whose works I have read.

My debut post is on Shannon Heuston, author of Under God's Big Sky. Enjoy!

By the by, this will be a once-a-week, invitation-only thing, so please don't beg me for inclusion right now. I have to have read your book in order to feature you, and alas I don't have a great deal of time to gorge myself on everyone's works. I'm starting with those I have already read.

Trishna Damodar | 26 comments Oh that’s really wonderful! It is great you are encouraging budding writers. Wish there were more like you in the writing world!

Kimberly Hockaday | 79 comments Awesome. Not begging you for inclusion but would love to know your process in selecting authors and what an author needs to do.

message 4: by Dale (new)

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments My "process" at the moment is that if I've read your book and see something good in it (even if it's got problems), I'll eventually get around to featuring you. I'm part of the Indie Author Co-Op for EBook Feedback (formerly for Ebook Reviews). Most of the authors I've read are members of that group. I may eventually branch out a bit from there, but my time is limited right now. Also, I'm focused on fiction and on genres I know something about, mostly SF/Fantasy/Mystery/occasional mainstream. Make sense?

Interesting combination. ;-) Historical/Romance isn't something I've ever read, but if time permits I might be persuaded at some point.

Chris Stead (chrisstead) | 15 comments Nice work Dale! The sentiment in your intro paragraph was great. I hope you encourage more readers to do the same for us indies.

If I can get to you I will, but as I said, I have to read one of your books before I can include you, and I don't have a lot of time right now.

You're quite welcome. By the by, I mean to ask if I should be identifying you as D. J. or Amy. I used D. J. and thought that was right, but the cover says Amy. Is that an artifact of Radish growing? ;-)

message 20: by Amy (new)

Amy Hamilton | 2560 comments Yes, unfortunately I can only have one name on Radish. So I'll be publishing Missing Remnants under my real name, but it'll appear as Amy on Radish. (You can tell I'm raising my eyebrows right now, can't you!)

message 40: by Chrys (new)

Chrys Cymri | 114 comments I've had two lovely emails from readers this past week saying the same. And hounding me for the next one! Have you picked up the free novella 'Raven's Flight'? It's origin story, and permafree on Amazon.

message 41: by Dale (new)

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments No, I haven't picked up that one yet. Unfortunately I'm finding myself swamped with things and not getting much done on my own novels. Too many irons in the fire, as usual...

message 42: by Dale (new)

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments I've posted a review of Alex's book An Unwanted Inheritance: Cas Dragunov #1 here on Goodreads and on Amazon.com. I'll be adding it to my blog later this week, along with (I expect) an author interview.

Great posts, both! I've shared them on my Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/inkbiotic/ if you want to see. Dale that was an interesting interview, did it cause problems that you were a bit critical in the review? Did the author mind? Or was he just happy to get the interview?

Dale Lehman (dalelehman) | 1814 comments Petra wrote: "Dale that was an interesting interview, did it cause problems that you were a bit critical in the review? Did the author mind? Or was he just happy to get the interview? "

No, it generally doesn't. When I review a book, I'm honest about my reactions, but I also try to balance any negative comments with positive comments. I wouldn't even post a review on my blog if I didn't think the book had some redeeming qualities or if I didn't honestly think the author at least showed promise.

A couple of times I've gotten an argument about my comments, but most authors are grateful that somebody cares enough about their work to say anything at all. I also often send authors some personal commentary to suggest ways they might improve their work. Obviously these are just my own thoughts, which authors are free to accept or reject as they will. But they are almost always gratefully acknowledged, which in my book means the author is serious and wants to improve his or her craft.

Oh, and thank you for sharing the post!

An interesting answer, thank you. I'm always a bit nervous when writing reviews, because I don't want to hurt someone with my subjective opinion. But you're right, if you want to learn as an author, listening to criticism is a good way to do it.
