So I finished this one and I think that there are definitely weaknesses in the writing style - it sometimes seems awkward or just doesn't seem to flow naturally. I did, however, like the plot and the character work. Anna is a protagonist who a lot of people could have issues with, she is self centered and at the same time self defeating and she basically abandoned her brothers as soon as she could. Learning about her and watching her deal with her brother after the murder, helps the reader to understand her a bit better. I believe she became self centered and career oriented as a survival skill after a childhood in a family that centered on the disabled child above all else. Having her as a lead made it an interesting read for me.

I also found the author's take on autism and its effect on a family to be a step away from current characterizations and I thought that was well done.

I am interested to see what others think of it. I am still waiting for the main group read from my library, hoping to get it by the end of the month.

This book got my attention right away. Anna's story of growing up with a disabled brother (severe autism) and the family dynamics that went with that is actually enough for a good book. But, murder always makes things better and I am liking Detective Martinez very much...a serious guy who has a soft side as well. The characters are all engaging and the plot is great. Suprised by the ending which is always fun. Good, steady pace as well.
Really good value book.

AngryGreyCat---I totally agree with your assessment of how autism was handled. There are levels to this disorder and it seems like in the last few years only the less severe is ever presented. Sadly, it was almost refreshing to read an honest look at the real challenges of this severe level of the disorder.
