Challenge Levels:

Pike's Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s
Mount Blanc: Read 24 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Vancouver: Read 36 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Ararat: Read 48 books from your TBR piles/s
Mt. Kilimanjaro: Read 60 books from your TBR pile/s
El Toro: Read 75 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Everest: Read 100 books from your TBR pile/s
Mount Olympus (Mars): Read 150+ books from your TBR pile/s

And the rules:
*To choose a level, open a topic under one of the challenge level folders and name your climb. If you decide to climb higher, just open a new topic in the new level's folder.

*Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. If you find that you're on a mountain-climbing roll and want to tackle a taller mountain, then you are certainly welcome to upgrade. All books counted for lower mountains carry over towards the new peak.

*Challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2018.

*You may sign up anytime from now until November 1st, 2018.

*Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2018. No library books. If you're looking for a library book challenge or one that counts books on your non-owned TBR list, then there may be challenges out there that do that. This one does not.

*Rereads may count only in the following circumstances: If you did not own the book when you read it long ago and far away [based on your age, you can decide what that might mean] and you bought the book pre-January 1, 2018 intending to reread it now that it's your very own. [To clarify--the intention is to reduce the stack of books that you have bought for yourself or received as presents {birthday, Christmas, "just because," etc.}. Audiobooks and E-books may count if they are yours and they are one of your primary sources of backlogged books.]

*You may count any "currently reading" book that you begin prior to January 1--provided that you had 50% or more of the book left to finish when January 1 rolled around. I will trust you all on that. [Amendment: The only exception to this rule is if you have participated in Mount TBR the previous year and were unable to finish the book in time for the Final Check-in Post. Then--if you finish the book post-January 1, you may count it as your first step of the new challenge.]

*You may count "Did Not Finish" books provided they meet your own standard for such things, you do not plan to ever finish it, and you move it off your mountain [give it away, sell it, etc. OR remove it from your e-resources]. For example, my personal rule (unless it's a very short book) is to give a book at least 100 pages. If I decide I just can't finish it and won't ever, then off the mountain it goes and I count it as a victory--the stack is smaller!

*Books may be used to count for other challenges as well.

*Feel free to submit your list in advance (as incentive to really get those books taken care of) or to tally them as you climb.

*There will be quarterly check-ins and prize drawings!

Debra Barstad is there a page count attached to this? for example only books that are 100 pages or more?

I've never set a page count limit--If it has been sold as a book (not just a short story [or a longish short story] of any sort), then feel free to count it.

Kirsten (keslei) | 32 comments What's the rule on pre-ordered books that won't arrive until after Jan 1st? For example, I've pre-ordered a book that will be released on Jan. 2, 2018 - would it count or not?

Yes--as long as you order books before Jan 1, I will consider it owned by you before the beginning of the challenge.

Susan | 87 comments I think I know the answer, but want to doublecheck, I’ve got a book of six book-length Margaret Millar mysteries. I assume this book would count as one TBR volume. Is that right?

Actually--if each portion was *originally* published as a separate book, you are welcome to count it as six. There are some multi-story books (book- or novella-length stories) that were only published that way OR only separated after first publication--those would only count as one. I'll leave it up to you.

I am assuming this is the same for books I have won from the Goodreads Giveaway but have not received yet???

Yes--if you know it's yours before the end of 2017, then you may count it.

Margie (Bookzombie) (bookzombie08) | 7 comments If I have a physical copy of a book on my shelf, but decide to listen to the audio book from the library, is it possible to count that towards my climb or do I have to stick to the print copy? I think from the rules I have to stick to the print copy, but it doesn't hurt to ask. :)

I think it still counts but that's just me. I plan to count books that I read on my kindle while I still have physical copy at home

I would count it as long as you don't plan to read the print edition later. If it is off your to-read list, I don't think it matters how it gets off!

Yes--as long as you own the book, I don't mind how you "read" it (listen to it). I've done a similar thing when I owned a book and for some reason I could not locate it on my teetering stacks when I wanted to read it.

Jadetyger Sevea Bev, I have a question: If I have the audio version of a book I've physically read before, but have never heard the audio for, does that count toward my mountain?

Yes--I would count that as totally different experience. [I'm getting mellow in my old age :-)]

Ivy (luvbug) I don't always finish the book I start. I get around 100 pages into it and find that it is just not clicking...I can't get into the story. Do I count those 100 pages toward my goal or do I count the total pages for the book???

"Did Not Finish" (DNF) books count as a whole book done--provided that you are fairly certain that you won't ever return to it and give it another try. [I think I mention that in the rules above.] The Mount TBR Challenge isn't page-based, so I don't set a page limit for DNF books--as long as challengers give a book their standard try (whether that's 100 pages or "half the book" or whatever), then it counts as a book "done" and off the mountain.

Hi, I accept the rules as they are but I wanted to point something out. I read multiple books at a time. This is my third year and it is kind of frustrating that in December, I am often over the 50% portion of the book but I can't count it in the prior year because I didn't finish it, and I can't count it in the current year when I finish it because I had read most of it in the prior year. So I can't count it in either year. What about the possibility of having a caveat that we can count it when we finish if we were participating in the TBR group in the prior year, even if we were over 50% through in the prior year?

I'm willing to go along with that. I'll amend the rules above.

Carol | 8 comments Fan....tastic! This will urge me to finish the books I started but didn't finish last year. Sometimes I have to put books down to pick up one for a book club. Now I'll be more motivated to go back and polish them off. Thank you!

Krista | 8 comments Late to the party here, but love the concept of this challenge since it doesn't put books into categories.

I've joined and committed to at least Pike's Peak - as I am doing 2 other challenges (a 24 book and a 52 book), and much of my reading for those is library based.

But in looking at what I've read that year that I owned prior to 2018, I've already completed 7. This may sound like a silly question, but if I decide to go up a level for Mount Blanc - the first 12 still count, right?

Yes, first 12 still count! Most people pick a goal, and if they surpass it, they move on to the next mountain with a cumulative list.

Jessika: Thanks for fielding this question. I'm currently in a limited computer access situation (my laptop died :-( ). I keep wheedling computer time on my husband's netbook--but it's not nearly enough.

Did I miss a step?

Looking at the settings for this group: I set it up as "Public" and I don't see that an email verification is necessary. I'm not as tech savvy as perhaps I should be--if anybody has a suggestion to help, I'd be grateful.

Hi, just wanted to pop in here and say that I got some clarification in case anyone else runs into the same problem. If you've been on GR for a long time, it's possible you never verified your email with them. In order to do so, you need to go to your settings tab and then click the tiny blue link that says verify my email. It took my sister helping me, but we got it sorted.

Thanks!
