Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Wow, that's quite shocking Patti - do hope you don't get anything after being sneezed in.

Apparently most of my colleagues made it back in today, I'm glad I opted to work from home, chest is quite tight this afternoon, and one colleague was grumpy enough on the phone/e-mail. Done an Ocado shop with my neighbour, worryingly we mainly bought treat type things so still need to do a proper shop this weekend. Going to lie on the sofa under my heated blanket till it is an acceptable time to go to bed.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments One of my clients did an interesting thing. Well, I thought it was interesting (but then I can be a little weird). They installed anti-bacterial hand washers throughout the office. And, no, this wasn't a hospital or GP surgery or anything like that. It was a plain vanilla office shuffling paper.

They reckoned that lots of work time is lost to illness and much of it is due to catching colds. Apparently we get the germs on our hands and then we touch our faces ... a lot more often than we realise it.

At first I poo-pooed this. It seemed like too nanny state on steroids. But they reckon that it has cut the number of days lost to sickness. Maybe there is something in it, after all?

message 2453: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments They'd lose fewer days to illness if they'd not expect people to come in sick and spread it around.

Wish parents would keep their kids home, too.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good morning!

Could have done with not waking at 4am. Tsk.

I'm in such a grumpy mood this morning.

I need a proper holiday.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Sorry you're out of sorts. Waking up and not getting back to sleep is the pits.

message 2456: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Sorry to hear that, Patti, I've been up with this cold at 4/5am the last couple of days as well. Really starts you off badly.

Early start for me too, my son thought i needed to get up early on a Saturday! he is very thoughtful like that!

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Good morning all. It's a parent-teacher thing as the BBITW's school today. We do that speed dating (or is it speed dogging?) where we stand in the middle of the hall waiting for a teacher to come free and then pounce on them before any other parent can get there.

One niggle today is that one of the teachers seems to revel in setting unrealistic deadlines for coursework and then slapping the students down when they can't finish it. The BBITW is unhappy about it, but the teacher doesn't seem all that receptive. I may have to get out the parental shotgun to defend my boy.

Morning! Still editing.

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Being sneezed in is remarkably ugh, both the expression and the experience. Glad I've already breakfasted!

Morning everyone.

We may be due for a few days of sunshine without rain (what are those?) so himself is talking about pruning the roses. As he has an elbow problem, this means he'll supervise...

Wondering about investing in a two-berth motorhome, the size I'd feel comfortable driving. Although not so small that you have to go out into the prevailing element to set up the bed.

message 2461: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'd love to motor home round Europe one day. Only we'd need a two berth in separate motor homes so I could get away from Dave's snoring.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning all, woke up at 4 with a headache, managed to get back to sleep, cats eventually got me up at 8.40. Tried to go back to sleep but failed. Luckily no charity errands today, but need to do some housework, will break it up with TV. Trying to snow but its pathetic, so turning to rain. Cough isn't great so think I'll stay in today

Sorry you are grumpy Patti. Good luck with the gardening Elizabeth. Enjoy your day Will, sounds interesting

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I'd rather have Will's day than mine, with 3 viewings in an hour and a half.

Still, there's the rugby after that to look forward to

message 2464: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Viewings THEN rugby - when you've already suffered enough!

message 2465: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dave is going out to watch the rugby and is going to bring me back sushi for dinner. Also, I'm looking at posh hotels for a birthday weekend away.

Probably a pipe dream, but I can live in hope.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Loved your blog post Mary, but oh dear me you have trouble in store there as Mcmini gets older.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Sssh. i think I’m getting The Cold, don’t tell OH or he’ll go all paranoid about him getting it. The source of the germs was a bleddy nuisance on Friday. I took him to Tesco and he had a mega tantrum about not holding my hand as we went back to the car. He was so naughty but I lured him back, once he got up from lying on the floor, with the promise of being allowed to click the car keys to open it up. It’s so busy there with taxis and disabled car bay at the front I couldn’t tough it out and leave him to it. Anyway just spoken to my daughter who asked what happened as he told her we went to Tescos and quoted the little lad as saying. “It didn’t go well”. He really cracks me up.

He's a wicked boy but he has a very good heart. I suspect he'll be no worse than I am.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Will, viewing and rugby remind me of the saturday we put our house up for sale in Loughor. There was an All blacks match on TV and woman, elderly mother and long suffering husband turn up without appointment to look at the house. The Husband made a beeline to watch the TV and my husband misjudging the door being open said tell them to bugger off they’ve only come to be nosey. They aren’t buying. The husband looked at him and said he was right, it was the women’s idea of a good afternoon out just looking.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Alcohol and deep fried food is blamed for poor Scottish health, but I reckon its caused by crushed hope.

Afternoon all. I am not watching the rugby, just sighing heavily at the updates.

Loretta (lorettalivingstone) | 419 comments I'm stuck with Iain watching rugby. I can't do much atm. In fact, I've been stuck on the sofa for the past ten days. Back on 24th, I missed a step. Now my poor foot looks like a muddy pig's trotter. At least the swelling is starting to go back down, though. I was in too much pain to be chatting to anyone even online for ages. Just did some hit and run stuff with my poor foot in glorious technicolour on Facebook. Luckily, I can't post photos here, so you're spared at least the sight of my foot if not me complaining about it.
Iain is enjoying France v Ireland better than Scotland v Wales because Scotland didn't even score. Poor Iain. We couldn't even go out for his birthday. He was too shattered from long, long January hours, and I couldn't get my foot into a shoe, anyway.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Sorry to hear you injured yourself Loretta, hope it is better soon

Sorry about the foot. Even sorrier if it forces you to watch things on the telly you don't want to watch.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh dear Loretta. That sounds horrible!

I'm pleased the pain has receded enough that you could let us know about it.
I wonder if it's sort of like what happened to my mom a few years back. She missed the last step going downstairs and shattered her leg. Ended up with pins in it and all. Took ages, but it did finally come right.

Morning.

I went to bed quite late so was hoping for a lie in.

That didn't happen.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Morning all. Recovering from a mostly good but occasionally grisly parent-teacher meeting. Some people just don't seem capable of listening as well as talking. Sorry to hear about your foot, Loretta.

The way that school runs parent meetings sounds positively medieval! We do three way meetings. Equal weight is given to including the student as they're the true stakeholder, of course.

I'd be scheduling a follow-up meeting if you're not satisfied, Will.

message 2484: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Yup - we're having another meeting this week. We had an incident where the school set the students a difficult project. The entire class said that they didn't have enough time to complete the project. The teachers insisted that they did have enough time. In the end, not one of the students managed to finish it, even after working through the weekend. They were all roundly criticised. One poor lad was given a mark of 1%.

The teachers are blaming the students. The students are blaming the teachers. We're piggy in the middle (initially) not sure who to believe.

We have the option of escalating it to the headmaster if we don't get a satisfactory answer from the school. But I'd rather not go down that route if we can avoid it.

message 2485: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I see no reason to not include the headmaster as all you're seeking is a solution to a problem. Perhaps they'd have a different perspective that would help.

If the school has a counsellor, it might be worth including them as well.

I very much doubt the kids are trying to avoid the work. Treat them as thinking beings and they may suggest the best solution.

message 2486: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. I feel for anyone with foot pain, Loretta. I had a year of it recently.
Take it further, Will. Youngsters only have one childhood. It shouldn't be wasted on school aggro.

Lovely here today, if you like it perishing cold!

message 2487: by Loretta (last edited Feb 04, 2018 09:47AM) (new)

Loretta (lorettalivingstone) | 419 comments Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. The swelling is going down and I managed to get an ankle boot on so we could go out for a short drive. I even managed a very short hobble. YAAAAAAAY! *Hops up and down on good foot waving walking stick.* It was heaven to get out of the house. I was careful not to go to far as the main part of my ankle is still swollen, but the leaflet said to exercise, and I've not really stuck my nose out of the door for the last eleven days. I feel really lucky not to have broken it. Just to get out, even on the pavement (I didn't risk the woods - that would have been foolhardy) and see the snowdrops (one of my favourites) and hellebores and primroses was so uplifting.

My toes still look like I've been digging with them, lol.

Good luck with sorting that one out, Will. When you have two such opposing views, it can be hard to find a middle ground that suits everyone. I think Patti is right - include the headmaster, and maybe you'll find a solution which works for them all.

Sounds like some data has to be gathered, and analysed by the ones in the middle. Why did the students say they couldn't do it? Why did the teachers insist they could? Is it a matter of standards?

To be assigned impossible tasks, and then be graded low on not accomplishing them, kills spirits.
