Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments I'm delighted to report rain (light but steady) on several days now, slow enough so it can seep into the ground. No one is claiming end of drought, but the fire hazards must be way down.

Jim | 21809 comments We've been lucky, the storms are apparently an after effect of the bad weather in the US, and for once, they've swung round north of us and hit the Scots rather than hitting us and the Scots.

Looking ahead we'll get the belts of rain coming in until Tuesday Wednesday but not all that much wind

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments That's great Alicia. I try not to complain about rain at this time of year, as the alternative could be hours of snow, and even with all the rain we've had, the reservoirs are still lower than they should be, although gradually improving, which is great to see

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments It feels like a huge disaster averted; it isn't, not yet - many of the dams throughout the Southwest of the US are in dire shape.

But we have to start somewhere, and rain in the plains and snowmass on the mountains are both extremely welcome in this part of the country.

The rest of the country, not so much.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments A happy hogmanay to all!

As we now live in a flat with only one door, it isn't possible to open the front door to let the new year in with the back door open to let the old one out. Also, a dark stranger carrying a lump of coal would NOT be admitted. However I have cleaned the house very well so my granny would be proud :)

I shall be celebrating in our traditional manner with a small dram and then retiring well before 12.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Happy New year everyone. Goodreads had stopped sending me notifications again.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Happy New Year, I've started mine with a walk, which I want to do more of (although maybe shouldn't do more of the Bailey's hot choc I had to warm me up after!), and soon going to have a bath and start my first book of the year, need to decide which one!

Jim | 21809 comments Today is actually dry, a little cold, but dry. I'm revelling in the novelty

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We've had clear blue skies all day today, with a little frost. Lovely.
We managed to avoid the lonny dook yesterday - according to the RNLI there were 400 dookers this year. We heard them from the house as they ran in!
Today I have mainly been fiddling with my website, and have managed not to break it :)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, nice sunny, if cold, day today, so did a nice long walk (am nearly at 13k steps), and we stopped at one point to have a nice hot chocolate, the lake is pretty much back to normal, will post a pic of it this week, tried to get the same angle as the one I posted in Sept. Bumped into ratty neighbour on the way home, so had a quick chat, then saw someone I knew across the road, shouted happy new year to her and her dog tried dragging her across the road, so I went over to say hello to him, she was very shocked as he doesn't like many people, and I've only met him a handful of times! Typically I can remember the dog's name more than hers, and I've known her for years! Forgot to mention, I was very touched the other day, I found a wax melt scent my cleaner has been looking for, and mentioned they sell a scent I really like, she bought it for me!

Crazy people R!! Glad you haven't broken your website!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, back to being wet and miserable, so apart from putting the food recycling out, I haven't left my house (and that's about 6 steps from the front door!!), had a lazy start to the day, done some chores, watched a film and made a dent in my book, so a good day overall

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Any day you get some serious reading time is a plus.

To get ready to continue writing LIMBO from its horrible rough draft and piles of notes, I'm re-reading NETHERWORLD, and remembering lots of little details as I go. Interesting exercise.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another wet and windy day, so not left the house again, starting to get cabin fever, suspect Lucy is too, she keeps running round the house as she doesn't want to go outside. Did decide to re-arrange my nail varnishes by brand and colour today, and am going to give some away. Pics of the lake, I did try and get the same angle, but was too sunny to check back which angle I was at in September.

Pic of the lake from this week, showing roughly what it should look like (still a bit low in places)

How it looked in September when it was really low

It is Alicia, although I'm going to have to eat into some of my reading time if I want to eat better and earlier this year, which seems disappointing!

message 17366: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments There are simple meals which require almost no prep and fulfill nutritional requirement - some combination of finger foods you could eat WHILST reading: a couple of forms of protein, some dip, and crudités (I love raw broccoli and cauliflower and carrots and mushrooms), maybe a favorite piece of bread or some crackers.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, we had a break in the wind and rain today, so have not only left my house, but got out long enough to hit my step count, feel so much better! Went to food club with friend, she convinced me to sign up (you pay £3.50 a week, but get at least £10 of food), some weeks you get a lot of soft veg, so she has offered to take some of my veg and use it to make soup and feed me! Then as it had stopped raining I did a canal walk, then had to go to candle shop for my sis, as they were doing £20 of wax melts for £13, and I only bought for her! Got chatting to them, then had to get my prescription and realised I was starving as I didn't have lunch, so it was a quick tea unfortunately, although at least early!

Thanks Alicia, such an enabler! I'm going to try and get in the habit of making 2 pans of food on a Sun, to have 3 lunches and 3 teas, then hopefully there'll be something at food club friend can make soup from, so that can be Thu tea (and maybe Fri).

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, dry but cold today, my last official day off work (I know I'm not back till Mon, but I don't work weekends!), had a lovely day, went with my friend to drop her kids off, as there is a town near their school that is really quaint, nice cobbled roads and independent shops - and quite a few charity shops, did well, got 3 tops and a book, with change from £10. We had a nice breakfast, I do like going out for breakfast. Then we went to their Asda, which is massive, ground floor is like Asda Living, top floor is a usual Asda! Then when we got back, I decided as it was still dry, I'd go and do the food shopping, although bought more for ratty neighbour than me! Then thought it was still dry, I'd take my plastic and books to co-op, although Coco was looking chilled on the chair, so didn't have the heart to move her to get to the books, so took my plastic and came home with books!! Hoping to hit 10k steps

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, woke up feeling quite drained, so when I heard heavy wind and rain, I was glad of the excuse not to leave the house. However at 12ish we had sun and blue sky, checked the phone and it said a 2 hour dry slot, so felt I had to go out, and told myself I'd treat myself to a hot choc at the coffee shop for a reward! Did a quick canal walk and got to stroke some cute dogs. Had a nice chat with the people in the coffee shop, and was good and didn't have a blondie (only because I'm still eating mince pies!). Saw something online earlier, someone who regularly takes pics from the bird hide at the lake, only 10 days ago it was low enough to still have grass where there is normally water, I knew we'd had a lot of rain, but can't believe it's enough to go from dry to needing the overflow in 10 days! I heard flood warnings are coming, which I can well believe with how water logged paths are round here.

message 17370: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments We're having a lot of runoff, too - the ground is too dry, too deep, to absorb as much of the rainwater as it otherwise could.

And there are three more atmospheric rivers in our immediate future. That will create flooding and mudslides.

Praying for the millions who will be affected worldwide.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, another day that started off wet and windy and dried up, but a lot later, so I couldn't be bothered going for a walk. Have finished the book I started yesterday though. Have cooked cauliflower and mushrooms in the air fryer for tea, worked well, so that could be my plan for eating better, put a load of veg in the air fryer while I'm sorting the cats out and doing chores/walking, then I'd just need to find some protein and could eat while reading. Still got quite a lot of party food and cheese to get through though, was very ambitious!

Forgot to say, read MT's latest blog post yesterday, did have me in tears at places, but well done on getting through 2022 with all it's challenges x

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, first day back in work after two weeks off - when the alarm went off, Lucy looked bleary eyed at me before deciding she wasn't getting up! Another miserable day, although at least I am getting plenty of reading done as the weather isn't good for much else. Busy day in the office, but nice atmosphere

message 17373: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Yes, it was a good blog by MT.
A really wet day today, but we have finally got BT broadband back rather than wifi.
It appears that on December 14th Openreach migrated a lot of people from one system to another and we were only half migrated. So as all our data hadn't stayed together, our broadband just stopped.
Anyway an engineer actually turned up, worked out what must have happened and had a long talk with Openreach IT people who married our data up again

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, very wet and windy today, according to the radio lots of issues on the road, and we have gale force winds and rain for most of the week, so that won't help! Had to go to the docs this morning for bloods, never a good sign when the nurse asks you what bloods you are having done! Turns out she couldn't work out what I actually needed, and the nurse who'd told me to book in for bloods was off, so she couldn't ask her, so when I go for my asthma review, she'll do them then! Then I struggled to leave the car park, someone had parked at a funny angle and really far forward next to me (and he was sat in the car, smiled at me when I struggled to get into my car!), and as it was busy, someone had dumped a car in a non spot, so had to struggle getting out, while the bloke sat and watched! Only advantage of having to go out in the car in bad weather was that I needed milk, and co-op was only a few min diversion. First couple of meetings of the year this pm.

Glad you have finally got internet sorted Jim, you've been missed.

message 17375: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Some people ARE oblivious to the inconvenience they put other people through. How nice for them.

I can't believe there wasn't a WRITTEN prescription for your bloodwork. Sounds rather slipshod to me.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Well, yes, you'd think as the doctor wanted ones the hospital hadn't done, she'd have made a note. She did say it said I needed a rheumatology review and I said 'why, I saw a rheumatologist last month and got a follow up this month' - can't see what a nurse can ask better than a rheumatologist!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, more drama's today! Think I mentioned that I'd asked the chemist last week if they could get hold of Lucy's meds and they said yes without asking to see my prescription. So, went in today to drop it off (kind of between rain!), to be told that actually, no they can't get it! So I came home and rang the chemist who I got it from the other year, they don't stock it, but can order it, and will arrive in 24 hours! Given that the first is a large chain, and the other is a really small independent chemist attached to a petrol station, I can't understand how they can get something in 24 hours that the other hasn't stocked in years! So will have to go and drop it off after work tomorrow. While I was at the chemist, I asked about the prescription my doctor did last Thu, even though the sign says prescriptions ordered on a Thu will be ready the week after, I got told to come back on Fri!! Luckily I can buy an over the counter slightly less strong version of that med, which means I can wait till Fri, because the date on my repeats mean I can't order till I only have a couple of days worth of meds, but the chemist are now making you wait over a week! Someone in front of me said she'd waited 2 days longer than the sign said and they still didn't have it ready!

message 17378: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Inconvenient, especially when you have to make extra trips, and when there is a clearly posted sign. At least they could update their sign!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments It is - the chemist I need for Lucy's meds is near work, I could have dropped it in on Mon and collected it tomorrow if the one round the corner from my house hadn't messed me about, luckily we have enough for Sun, and I'll collect the next lot on Mon. That is actually a new sign Alicia, they didn't have one before Christmas!! I appreciate they are busy, but when doctors don't let you order in advance, it's not good for people not to get their medication when they need it.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Everyone is stressed everywhere - so I guess we'll have to assume things aren't working, and ask, ask, ask - kindly, politely, and with empathy - but not believing implicitly. Because otherwise the assumptions NOT being true costs us a lot.

Another pandemic gift.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, can't believe it's Thu already, this first week back has flown by - unfortunately I haven't done as much as I would have liked, thankfully two meetings got cancelled! Weather hasn't been as bad, which is good as some roadworks started after I left the house, there was about 5 miles of queues tonight, made worse by people who don't realise you aren't supposed to sit on a roundabout and block people trying to go round it! dropped Lucy's prescription off, the bloke today was 'leave us your number and we'll ring you if we get it in', so had to point out someone already had checked, then he seemed fine, much friendlier than my chemist - friend tried to go for hers again today, apparently the chemist changed computer system which is causing some of the chaos, combined with what the other chemist told me, that there are issues getting hold of certain meds.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, ended up having two meetings today - had to go in the second one as a colleague wasn't sure how to use the new projector set up!! Unfortunately it's now suspended from the ceiling, you get an awful draft from it. Went to drop books off at the co-op after work as it was dry and then went to the chemist, they actually had my medication today. She remembered my name - I didn't think I was that memorable, but she knew the woman behind me's name too, so I suspect we all keep being told to come back so often she remembers us! She did ask if I'd got Lucy's meds sorted, as they found some in the back after I left (although I've had this before and it's been the wrong dosage, so not convinced!)

message 17384: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Does the projector go up and down, so it doesn't hit anyone in the head? A big draft sounds wrong.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments It's supposed to be high enough that people don't walk into it, which makes it tricky for short people like me to switch it on an off!! I think it's the fan that is causing the draft, and we never noticed before as it was on a desk.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments At lease it'll be a warm draught, as those lamps get incredibly hot!
Raining here again, after a dry day or two. It's been so wet here for the last few weeks, there's quite a lot of standing water in the fields now. Hard to remember last summer when the golf courses were the colour of sand

absolutely rotten wet here, getting ridiculous. We're lucky we don't really flood because the water runs off to the sea too quickly :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I've got one of those big soft garden trugs sitting outside in my garden Jim, and it is only about 6cm away from being full of water. That's a lot of rain

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, had a nice lazy morning (well, apart from sorting out the kitchen!), did my nails ready for going out for afternoon tea, think these might be my favourite ones so far, can't stop looking at them! Went a different way to collect friend due to roadworks, drove past the lake and for the first time in at least 6 months, I thought 'wow, that's high'!! I did regret listening to the sat nav when I was being buffeted on the motorway, downside of a micra is they aren't great in the wind! Afternoon tea was lovely, service was really slow, didn't have time to go to M & S after, but did get to Aldi. Very windy now, but snow forecast has changed.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments We've had heavy wind and rain (atmospheric rivers) alternating with some sunny patches. This is our first exposure since we moved to California in 2018 - the previous years were fire hazards and smoke. I'm glad to think the reservoirs and groundwater are being refilled, but there have also been deaths and mudslides and roads sliding off mountains.

A little daunting.

Yes we had several inches in the bottom of a wheelbarrow the other morning

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening all, woke up feeling quite achy and snuffly, so despite the fact it's been dry quite a bit of the day, I decided going for a walk in cold weather probably wasn't wise, so had a lazy day, was even half hearted with the housework. Went to cook a curry and bolognaise this afternoon for lunches/teas, but turns out it's a bit hard to cook a bolognaise without mince, and I realised at 3.55, so at least I have lunches, and will spend the next few days eating air fried broccoli with random freezer food (still have a lot of party food)

message 17394: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Take care - sniffles could be anything. Resting should help. Hope whatever it is leaves you alone soon.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, woke up feeling OK, although sniffly since coming home in below freezing temps! Had an hour long meeting this morning, it started snowing towards the beginning of the meeting, but was quite windy, so just seemed to be blowing it about but everything was very white by the end of the meeting! Then the sun came out, which slightly melted everything before remaining bits turned to ice! Had an interesting conversation with colleague at lunch, she was saying she could eat lasagne every day, and I said I rarely cook it because my dish serves 6 portions - light bulb moment, that could either be 2 week's of lunches or a mix of lunch and tea, so going to buy ingredients for it on Fri and cook one on Sun.

Gold to have in the freezer for dinner or lunch.

yes my lady wife will make many things in double the amount or even more, and freeze for next week or whatever.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments When I met him, in grad school, my husband used to buy the ingredients for about 50 sandwiches (he liked rye bread and mustard because they froze well) - various meats and cheeses - and assemble them all at once and load the freezer.

Every day before he went to school, he'd grab two different varieties, frozen, and stick them in his backpack. By lunchtime they'd be thawed and ready to eat! No thinking for a whole months of lunches.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12593 comments Evening, got in the car this morning and it was -3!! Had to scrape the car too, and it seemed whiter out than when I'd gone to bed. Been really foggy all day, just come down from sitting with the girls for an hour and we've had snow! Cold has well and truly come out now, called in Lidl on the way home to get some more sore throat sweets and a pizza fell in the basket, so much for healthy food!

My sister in law used to make sandwiches every Sunday and freeze them for lunches, I never liked the thought personally.
