Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, another bad night sleep, not sure if it was the after work nap or foot. Another rainy day, at least I don't have to water Lucy's grass pot. Still rather tired and keep getting really hungry, figure I should give in to it, as my body will need extra fuel to heal, and when I have the other one done, going to book the day after off too. Rather frustrating day at work, had been asked to book a 30 min meeting today, we got kicked off after an hour when we lost internet at the office, then had another 30 mins, I was so starving I turned my mic off and ate during the second one, good job as I only ended up with 15 mins between meetings. Had to take my dressing off today, it said to soak for 2 mins, I gave up after 25 mins, cut off as much as I could and will try again tomorrow, read online after that it can take up to 60 mins. I've not had the throbbing pain she mentioned, but after standing/walking, I do have to elevate it, so will see how I get on over the weekend, as it said it only needed elevating for the first 48 hours, but as it's to aid recovery, suppose it won't be a bad thing if I do it over the weekend too.

Well, she's 14, and has probably been eating unsuitable food longer than the 6.5 years I've had her, to get so obsessed with things cat's don't normally eat to draw blood getting it from you!

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Desley, I hope your foot is doing OK.

I am now on holiday in France. It’s bloody marvellous. There are six of us; two families of three. Have stuffed my face today but because I had a big breakfast and no lunch I am only a little over the target set on my food pontoon (or diet as the normals call it). Wahoo.

It’s really hot here but lovely. We had to get round the M25 so I reckon going on Thursday morning, we just got out in time.

Desley I am so impressed with all the stuff you do and getting the steps in. Nice work and hope the foot is soon sorted.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, did my usual Sat of waking up at 5ish, watched a bit of TV, had something to eat and drink, fed the cats and then got a bit more sleep - have still been tired, but my normal tired where you can't get back to sleep. Have spent most of the day in bed though, just to get a change of scenery from the sofa, but I've not left the house since Wed and not been too bothered. Ratty neighbour popped round earlier with some crumpets, as I forgot those when I went shopping on Wed, so have had a chat with a person. Glad she did actually, I was going to shower to wash my hair and then soak my foot in a bowl to get the bandage off, she suggested a bath, good job I did, after an hour and a half I got fed up and gave it a helping hand - think that might be the first time I've got fed up in the bath! Thought I'd give it plenty of padding, which means I can't get my slippers on, and have managed to bandage two of my toes, rather than one!! Bit worrying to say I have first aid training! It's a bit more painful now the dressing is off, but haven't needed many painkillers, it's more walking/standing.

Hope you have a great holiday MT, glad it's hot there, dropped considerably here and had rain, although we needed it. Thanks for the encouragement.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, grateful for another wet and windy day that makes it easier to stay in, forgot how tired doing nothing can make you though! I've done some housework today (put a sock over my foot while sweeping cat litter up) and stopped every time it got uncomfortable as I figured the next stage would be pain. I'm going to stop the anti inflammatories today, hopefully I've had long enough on them. I've also let Lucy have her sofa back, going to try just sitting on my sofa without having my foot elevated, see how that goes. Annoyingly I broke a nail too far down while doing the washing so have currently got a plaster on it, first aid kit getting well used this week! Achieved another thing off my list today, watched a film this afternoon. Only thing left is reading a book, I'm 339 pages into a 800+ page book, so for most people, that would be a full book!

Yes my daughter likes A Rare Benedictine: The Advent of Brother Cadfael Cadfael
I have them all in the big omnibus editions, three books in one. She finds them too heavy for comfort and so is buying them as individual stories in charity shops :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, typically today has been the worst for pain, not just my toe, the top of my foot, knees and hips too - maybe I won't be in the office this week, we'll see what happens when I go to the shop on Wed for milk. My other concerns about going in the office is it's supposed to rain and I have to wear open toed shoes, don't fancy getting my bandage wet and having to re bandage it when I get to the office, and I work upstairs, I have a habit of bashing my toe on our nice marble type steps at the best of times, but our lift is temperamental! At least boss will be fine if I do decide not to go in the office this week.

Posted at the same time there Jim, I did try a Cadfael book this year, but wasn't keen on it.

I wonder whether the other pain is because with your toe you're not 'walking properly'
I had that when I twisted on knee and by sparing that knee I ended up having pain in the opposite hip. It was only when I walked properly and 'took the discomfort' from the knee that my hip stopped playing up

Sorry you didn't like Cadfael, but I suspect it's a matter of taste. My daughter loves Agatha Christie and can sit and devour them, one book after another. I like the occassional one but if I read more than two, they get a bit cloying for me. Cadfael is the same for her, when I had my gall bladder out I just sat and read them the full set, one after another. Yet she likes them but cannot read more than a couple at a time :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, am a really bad patient, toe is annoying me already and it's only been 6 days - I'm not a good patient and hate things making me feel like an invalid, and as it said you can get back to normal things after a few days, I feel like after 6 days I should be doing more! I did get to the bottom of the street to put recycling out earlier, wasn't that comfortable, so going buying milk tomorrow will be interesting. I know a few friends have been telling me not to do too much or go in the office, but think when you live with chronic pain, it seems wrong to say you can't do something because it hurts, wouldn't get much done if I gave up every time something hurt!

It could well be that Jim, or the fact that my bandage is covering most of the part of foot I put my magnesium gel on, I was expecting some extra pain. I love Agatha Christie too, the film I watched on Sun was one of adaptations, not the usual Agatha Christie (partly no Poirot or Miss Marple in it!).

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, think I've done too much today, it was a lovely sunny day so decided to do some washing, then I went to the shop at lunch for milk (did go to the closest to my house, rather than the furthest away like I initially planned), had to start the car to make sure it would work when they collect it tomorrow, litter trays and some washing up, when I went to bathe and re dress my toe it had bled a bit, so not going in the office, but still hopeful for Fri. Think I need to stop thinking of my toe as my usual stuff and plough on regardless and accept it as a wound that needs time and rest to heal. Another frustrating day at work too. Hire car is here, they gave me a Corsa, which I have driven before, but he had to dump it at the bottom of the street as mine isn't being collected till tomorrow, they wanted to wait till I had the hire car first.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, have done slightly less today (only 1.6k steps compared to yesterdays 2.6k), although moving the hire car did make my toe bleed so have decided to work from home again tomorrow, although I am going to drive to Lidl either after work tomorrow or on Sat, partly to get used to the hire car before going in the office on Mon. It hasn't been as sore though. Bit of a disaster with the hire car, when he dropped it off yesterday I just thought 'great, I've had a Corsa before', so today when the bloke came to collect my car, thought I'd move the hire car straight away and see how it drove - unfortunately, it's a fancy electric thing inside and I couldn't figure out how to get it in drive (I was halfway there, I'd put my foot on the brake, and pressed the unlock button, but didn't realise you need to keep hold of the unlock button while moving the stick!), I'd noticed the bloke was still at the top of the street putting mine on the truck, but didn't think I'd have time to hobble up the street to ask him, but fortunately for me, something made him come back and check on me (maybe he kept hearing the car rev and not move!), and showed me how to do it! Another frustrating day at work, my internet dropped twice this afternoon while working, a colleague who was also working from home said they had the same problem, which made me feel a bit better.

I'll try Alicia, even ratty neighbour said yesterday I need to sit on my bum more

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I've seen a group of dolphins both today and yesterday, first time I've managed to in all the years we've been here. They were quite far out but still quite special to see.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, that was a hard day at work, the 8.30 meeting overran, so only had 7 minutes between the morning meetings, then another at 1! And most of the first meeting was boring, I just had to listen in case I got asked a question (which I did, three times), but at least I could put myself on mute and do some work. Decided that as it's forecast to rain all weekend, I'd go to the coffee shop today, and as it's payday (and we got a bonus this month), I'd have a sandwich, drink and cake, and bumped into my neighbours again! I've had two colleagues today check in on me and offer me a lift if I want to go in the office on Mon but don't feel up to driving, now I just need to decide which one to take up! I also decided to go to Lidl after work, stock up on food and also see how well I can drive the hire car, which is not well, the brakes are more sensitive and I'm cautious with my toe so I didn't enjoy driving it, although at least when I dressed it after coming home it Unfortunately the cleaner messaged this morning, she can't make it, so I will have to do some housework this weekend, but don't worry, I won't blitz the entire house, just do the hoovering, washing up and strip the bed. I'm sure the dust I've been ignoring will still be there next week! I also won't do it in one go either, I'll hoover tomorrow and leave the bed and washing up till tomorrow, at least I was expecting the cleaner so I'd tidied surfaces ready for her coming.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, I actually slept in till 6, which is unusual for a Sat. We had a bit of a lazy start, then I started on the floors, apart from the cat room, they were all hoovered/swept/mopped by 12, then I had some lunch while resting my toe, before showering and redressing my toe - despite doing more the last couple of days, it's scabbing over well and less discharge and no blood, so hopefully won't need to dress it for much longer, although I have started getting some stabbing pains the last hour or so. After I showered, I watched a film in bed, then I've done some reading. Luckily it's rained most of the day, so I haven't missed much.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4835 comments Amazing what you consider 'resting'!

But you are the best judge of what is too much for yourself (as long as you don't have to go back to the doctor to fix it), but I'm chuckling and shaking my head at your energy and what you consider 'minimum' necessary cleaning - so go at it, and keep up the reports.

Hope this fixes the problems - and you're back to a better version of yourself asap.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I’m with Alicia and Pam on the cleaning Desley. That’s me on a hyper day! I have one of those ‘wand’ hoovers and I just do bits of the house at a time. We are still on holiday, which is ace. I’m currently sitting outside a little wooden chalet in the middle of France somewhere. We’ve just had 4 days in Italy which was lush. Crikey but it’s hot though.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, struggled to get to sleep as it was quite stuffy, then Lucy woke me up at 4 being sick (clearly the human food she asked to try yesterday has upset her tummy, as it was a coated peanut and she is still off, I'm currently praying it wasn't large enough to cause an obstruction), and then I struggled to get back to sleep as I was constantly listening out for her. Occasionally she will be off after she's tried something that didn't agree with her, and I always feel a mixture of guilt and worry. Started off wet, but since lunch has been lovely, if it hadn't been for my toe, I'd have pegged the bedding out, and maybe even a second washload, but figured today that just stripping and making the bed was enough, especially as I've had to be on my hands and knees a bit cleaning floors, which is interesting when you can't put your big toe on the floor. Am also wondering if the pain around my other toes is related to the fact that when you can't bend your big toe, it's really hard to bend your other toes (can imagine a few of you trying this out!), so they might be getting more pressure than normal.

Thanks guys, figured I better do all the floors as apart from the bathroom, they all had dirty litter on (and I do only have 5 rooms, although I normally leave the stairs for the cleaner, I did do them this weekend), which I didn't think would be hygienic with my toe, and it hasn't been done since the day of my op, as I had hoovered before I went. I actually used to have to do more housework, when I fostered, there were daily, weekly and between cats checklists to be done, plus I had to take more care of the front room and landing for when people were viewing cats, I apologised to one person about the litter on the floor, and they said they expected it, but didn't want that to be people's impressions of the foster homes. Sounds lovely MT.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4835 comments Someone on FB suggested keeping an assortment of Get Well cards with writing in them, and displaying a bunch of them on a suitable surface - so that people coming in will notice and realize you are ill without you having to say anything - and will cut you the slack sick people get.

I haven't tried it yet, but it sounded sound.

Let us know if you try it.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, was nice to be in the office today, although I did need to take a couple of painkillers to get through the day. Decided to use the lift, asked colleague to hover on the landing upstairs in case I had any issues, she said she'd come in the lift with me, and we struggled to make it work, we eventually tried pressing and holding the button (bit of a theme in my life at the moment!), and you have to hold it the entire journey, seems a very bizarre function to me, also made us feel a bit odd as we'd had a bit of a jumpy ride! And she had to go out at lunchtime so offered to take me with her, I jumped at the chance, especially as I hadn't got anything for lunch when I went shopping on Fri, so gave me the chance to get my favourite sandwich from Boots. And we knew how to work the lift the second time! Neighbour was out when she dropped me off, she kept glaring at us, so we kept chatting (sat in the car) till she'd gone in, she looks at me with such venom since the other week, it's clearly festering in her! Garage rang, car won't be ready till next Mon, so got this hire car for another week, will be doing very little, I was going to stock up with cat supplies with some of my bonus, but not doing that in the hire car.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, started raining about 8pm last night and didn't stop till about 3.30, really heavy for most of the morning. My 8am meeting didn't last the full two hours, but my 12 meeting went on till about 1.35 (was booked for an hour), so didn't get a full lunch break today, at least no meetings tomorrow so might get to catch up a bit. The book I'm currently reading is by one of the authors I met in Jersey and is set in Jersey, so strange to think a couple of the shops I go to were there in 1885, would strongly recommend it Mrs Boots.

message 16932: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments It's can be strange to read a story set in a place you know :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, another frustrating day at work, am used to retired colleague forgetting something I told him last week, today he asked me something he asked yesterday! At least I had no meetings today, so could catch up a bit, till I realised I'd not added something to my to do list! Toe was looking quite dry when I bathed it this morning, one of my colleagues suggested to leave it unbandaged, which I've done today and it is a bit more uncomfortable. Still can't bend my big toe though, which is why I think it's painful to walk, to be fair it's barely moved in 2 weeks, so not going to worry just yet, and have an app with the podiatrist next month - other toe seems to be getting that extra skin under it now, hope I don't have to have the whole one removed on that foot too! Had to do the girls' tray after work, was cheeky and asked ratty neighbour to put the bag in the bin for me if I left it on the doorstep, which she did, then came in for a chat, was showing her my new nail varnish, she asked for a link and I saw some new ones, including scented ones, so am a bit tempted, don't know why I worry about space to put a few bottles of nail varnish, not like I have to justify myself to anyone!

I love reading books set in Jersey, I can picture certain things, but just couldn't believe the department stores being so old, which is odd, as the book is the history of the person who founded Boots, which is also still going

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4835 comments Enjoy your polishes - you've earned them.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, wore shoes today for the first time in over 2 weeks, foot and knee are so much happier, so I'll be able to go in the office again tomorrow. Had our department meeting this pm, we are trying to persuade retired colleague to take a few days off, see if that helps his stress/memory. And colleague on maternity leave was doing one of her keeping in touch days, I tried not ranting too much to her, don't want her to feel guilty, but was nice to have a chat. Foot was a bit swollen when I got home (not helped by sitting in traffic for over 30 mins - it's only a 3 mile journey!), so I was lying on my stomach on the bed to elevate my foot and Lucy looked awfully put out she couldn't sit on me so I turned round and we had lovely cuddles while I finished my book. And other good news, car was fixed today, I can swap the two cars over after work tomorrow, so will go to Aldi for food shopping on the way home, contemplated going to the retail park, but decided that might just be too much, too soon, I want to get out on Sat too.

That is true Alicia, I ordered 4 today, including a strawberry scented one. Luckily the nail varnish stand is hidden by the cat food overflow. so I can't see I have enough!!

message 16936: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4835 comments I think you probably needed some 'comfort polish' to feel more like your usual self.

Don't walk TOO much in the grocery store tomorrow - get the basics first, and be prepared to bail - because you'll still have to drive home and carry them in after you get them to your car (and there's no telling how long the line might be at checkout - like your 30 minutes in traffic).

Normal will be VERY soon.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Yes, that is a good point Alicia, between my foot and the stress at work, I should probably be grateful a few nail varnishes was enough to lift my mood! Luckily Aldi is only a small store, and doesn't have the distractions of the larger supermarkets, so I won't be there long, and am getting heavy stuff for ratty neighbour, told her I'll leave hers in the car till she gets home.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, that was a horrible day - started so well, till 8.15. Got up, foot felt fine, so showered and dressed for work, no traffic, got to work in 12 mins, used the lift, just as I got out of the lift, my foot started hurting! My hour long meeting at 8.30 went on for an hour and 47 mins, and we had to book a part two for the end of the day! Luckily my 1 and 2pm meetings were shorter than planned, but then the 30 min catch up meeting lasted nearly an hour, so that meant I was late leaving work, and I'm going to have to do some work over the weekend. Couldn't get hold of the garage to check they definitely had my car, so just had to risk it, but google had given me a different branch than the one I went to last time, luckily it was the right one and I got away without putting petrol in it. So happy to have my car back. Even though my foot was so sore, I did all the shopping on the way home, including some additional shopping from Home Bargains, funnily enough by the time I got to the third shop (which I had planned to walk to tomorrow, but thought I'd go in the car today instead), my foot seemed to be easing off.

It's certainly not a normal statement!!

message 16941: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4835 comments Hope you get a chance to put that foot up for a while - it's a trooper!

Hard to know exactly what is necessary and what is too much; sounds like you're navigating it thoughtfully.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Yes, I'm certainly not doing what I wanted tomorrow, but it's supposed to be nice so will make myself feel better by doing lots of washing instead! And I'm sure I can make it to the coffee shop, even if I have to sit in there and have a drink before walking back. The irony is apart from a bit this afternoon when my toe felt a bit numb, the pain is more under my big toe and my knee (hip was the quickest to settle), so some of the pain is because of not moving the same as I have been doing, so it's that balance between rest and not letting the rest of me get too stiff, even the puffiness in my foot is most likely due to not moving the same, that is definitely better than it was. And the good thing is I know what to expect when I have the other one done, so I won't be as impatient, I'll know roughly how long (and it won't be as bad, as it isn't my driving foot, so I'll be more mobile)

I suspect as your toe does get better the rest of your problems will ease because you'll go back to walking more normally

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments That's what I thought on Thu Jim, even my knee was less painful, but since that drive home on Thu, it's been worse, although the swelling is pretty much gone now and that is the most painful thing - the big toe pain is like the one I had in my other foot when I couldn't bend my toe

Yep, Desley, I was chuckling at that one too.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, had my usual bad night sleep for a Fri, so little energy today, have pretty much just done 2 washloads (not that they've been put away yet, been taking a bit upstairs everytime I go) and some washing up. When I eventually mustered up energy to get dressed, I walked round to the coffee shop, they had a spare table so I sat and had a blueberry white hot choc while I was contemplating which cake to buy, and have had a chat with ratty neighbour, was showing her my foot, she suggested I do a week on anti inflammatories and extra painkillers, think I'm going to have to. I'm going to try leaving my toe unbandaged when I go to bed tonight, for the first time, but still going to bandage it when I go in the office, even though I don't need to any more. I might test walking round the block without it first, see how comfortable it is.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Hope the walking test goes well Desley. Thought I was selling books today but that's next week. Luckily McOther realised and pointed it out to me last night. It's tough being this clued up.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, toe felt strange when I first got in bed without it being covered, but at least I slept through and even had a lie in till 8.10. Foot felt fine, but I was meeting my friend this pm, so I did very little housework, but then ratty neighbour came to show me one of her rats so standing to do that made my foot sore again. Did enjoy getting out in the sun with my friend, treated us both to an ice cream. Did have to come home, take a painkiller and lie on the bed with my foot elevated. Was supposed to be doing some of my day job, I was waiting for a text to let me know it was ready for me, I gave up at 5pm and logged on to find he'd emailed an hour earlier, I don't have a work phone to get notified, did a couple of things, but the laptop battery was getting low after all the meetings I had on Fri! So not that much done, so tomorrow will be quite stressful.
