Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Evening all, it's been a cracking day here and there was no haar to start with either! Boiling hot in the sun but a really cold wind from the north - so it was fine for us cooried in against the harbour wall where it was nice and sheltered. Supposed to be good for the whole weekend, although we don't seem to be quite so fevered regarding bank holidays up here as they are down in England!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, nice long weekend with little chores and nice weather! Going to local market town with walking friend today, not sure what time though, as she was still in the pub at 1.17am and said she'd message when she is up! Don't think we'll have chance to walk the 4 miles in, but my hip is bad today, so might not be a bad thing. As long as we get a mooch round the shops and a cocktail, I'll be happy.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments It’s overcast, windy and generally shitty here. Definitely a bummer after our holiday. It wasn’t hot every day over there but it was warm enough to wear shorts and a vest top and it’s not that warm here. Also managed to put my back out on the last day. It’s getting better but taking a while.

§§ oops, cat walked across the keyboard.

Desley, I always find that breaking big tasks up helps too.

Stuart, I sympathise, my car has just hit twelve and suddenly bits are falling off … you know … like the gear stick!

Ro, well seen, glad you have some decent weather.

I need to go and do some writing now but just thought I’d check in and say hello. Waves and sidles out of shot.

I never remember whether it's a bank holiday weekend or not, as they don't cover us. But I like to know when they are so I can avoid going anywhere :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, had a lovely afternoon, we didn't end up doing the walk, had lunch at a new place, a Persian themed cafe, and 2 cocktails after shopping, both lunch and the last cocktail were enjoyed sat outside in the sun, so it was a good job we couldn't go last week, had better weather, was a better day. Unfortunately all the seats were uncomfortable and woke up at 4am unable to turn over in bed with my hip! It has eased off slightly, but think I might forego hoovering/sweeping floors today, and just do the bed. Hoping for a nice enough day to lie outside reading.

Jim | 21809 comments Hope you got your nice enough day Desley. Here it was sort of warm enough but it got very overcast

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments We are still in the bad air quality from fires days.

Take it easy until it heals, Desley. Vacuuming can always wait.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, was quite overcast yesterday, so I went for a walk and found some sun, so sat on a bench reading for a bit, although Lucy wanted me to lie on the sofa with her all day. Hip still twingy today, supposed to be overcast all day, neighbour is busy, so think I might walk to Lidl to get a bit of exercise then finish my book, going to do my Sunday pamper session this afternoon, as it's fake Sunday.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments It's been cold, windy and overcast here in East Anglia since we got home on Wednesday. I've dug out a warmer jumper and will give up on the cotton trousers and go back to jeans tomorrow.

message 15860: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments It'll be 33°C here by 1pm - still in summer and fire season. I'm temperature-sensitive, so haven't been out much except for the outdoor pool on the really hot days.

But it's nice to have blue skies (even with some smoky days) almost every day. And there is almost always a time during the day when it is comfortable to go out - early for the hot ones, late afternoon for the cool ones - which is good for the soul. Which means that if you have something you need to do, you don't kick yourself later for not having gotten outdoors on the one nice day in a week (which I remember from New Jersey).

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, was interesting doing a full day in the office, was very quiet in the afternoon as people had either left or were in meetings. We are going to get a letter in a day or two, but they aren't lifting any restrictions and reviewing again at the end of Sept, I'm glad with this task I have to do. Podiatrist app was interesting, he tried persuading me to have the toenail surgery, but when he went to cut my nails discovered a skin tag under the one that is protruding most. I mentioned that i can't fully bend my toe after injuring my right foot, and he said that might never improve. Chanel has pinched my chair two consecutive nights, luckily neighbour suggested taking my deck chair upstairs to save me sitting on the floor, I thought I would be really stiff today , the chair helped.

Sorry that your air quality still isn't good Alicia. Yes, I had an autumn chill in the air when I woke up this morning, will have to dig out warmer clothes.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Urgh, why do 4 day weeks seem longer than 4 day ones!! Mind you, not helping that my feet have been sore since being prodded on Tue. Still 80 opportunities left to put on the database, it went funny when I got to number 500, we've never put that many on in one year, I did wonder if it had a limit!! One of the neighbours has just knocked on, his daughter has finally got round to clearing out some of her stuff, he binned about 100 books before realising that I like reading, so I've taken the other 4 boxes off him, he said any I don't want he'll take to the tip but I told him that was sacrilege and like me binning wine (he's a big drinker!), and I'll take them to the charity shop instead. I noticed some that a colleague is collecting, so will take them in work for her.

message 15863: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Cannot understand people who just bin books :-(

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Glad it is the weekend, the eye clinic rang today, my immediate response was 'you aren't cancelling, are you?' - she said no, we can bring it forward to Mon! Slightly inconvenient as I'm in the office in the morning, will have to drive home at lunch for my neighbour to drive me back past work to get to the hospital!

Me neither Jim, it might be the only time the Fifty Shades books will be in my house, but even they don't deserve to be binned, anything that encourages reading.

Jim | 21809 comments Our village hall has a free book exchange, borrow them, keep them, fetch stuff.
The lass who runs the hall sidled across to me one day and whispered, "We've arrived, we've got the full trilogy of 50 shades of Grey" :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments A saying comes to mind - attributed to Dorothy Parker (amongst others) - “It’s not a book to be tossed lightly aside — it should be thrown with great force.”

I spent a day this week replanting my mother's front garden, to my design and layout It's been quite a while since I did a full day's planting and digging - and I was certainly feeling it the next day! It may not have taken quite so long had most of the neighbours not stopped for a chat :D Just hope everything thrives as it will be quite embarrassing if it doesn't!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, woke up feeling quite drained, so I forced myself to go out for a walk, as it was overcast but dry, however it started raining, so I haven't gone as far as I wanted, and am now back on the sofa! Only got a few chores to do so hopefully will get my book finished, seeing as I have a lot more to get through now!! There are only 3 I definitely want to read, but about a dozen I'll give a go as they are free!

Ooh, a free book exchange would be fatal for me Jim!! Hope the garden thrives R!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Our facility library - a very nice wood-paneled room with floor to ceiling bookcases, and comfy chairs - is just downstairs in the same building. People who have brought too many books donate them when they move in, so there are a lot of new books.

I'd read a lot more if I had the energy to do that AND write, but have a tendency to prioritize my own work if possible.

Periodically, I go down and take out the CDs of Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey with Edward Petherbridge (the absolutely perfect Peter), so they don't discard them for not having been used.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I have to figure out a way to make them give me the DVDs if I'm the only person who watches them. Instead of dumping them as they do with things not taken out for a certain period.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Peter Death Bredon Wimsey is one of the models for my character, Andrew O'Connell.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, I had a lie in till 7.30, but didn't want to get up, had to for Lucy's medication. Lovely day today, so need to quickly hoover/mop the floors before it gets too warm, then going to go for a walk. neighbours family are coming over, they want to go to the pub I didn't feel safe in (and don't particularly like), so I said no.

It would seem to make more sense for them to give you the DVD's as you are the only person who watches them Alicia, I'd love a room like that.

message 15875: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I agree that you should stay out of pubs you don't feel comfortable in!

And about the DVDs. I'll figure out how to do that one of these days; meanwhile, my method has worked until now (but is subject to not working very abruptly). When you love something, you can find room for it in your limited space.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Morning all. McMini's first day at Senior school has finally dawned. We only forgo the rugby boots so it wasn't too bad ... oh yes, and the computer. Did about 10,000 steps before 10 am, hoovering the house only to discover my bastard fitbit had run out of juice and gone to sleep so instead of a hyper active day, it's telling me I've only walked a few yards and spanked me for not getting up and walking about every hour for the first three of the day. Sodding irritating when these things go wrong.

On the up side, it's sunny and I'm sitting in the garden as I type this for the first time since May? April? Something like that. It's been overcast and/or rainy between then and now.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, ironically neighbour had a bad night with her back, so cancelled the meal with her family, they are apparently coming this weekend instead. Had a fairly good eye app today - I was apparently first on the list so guaranteed not to be running late, although I was told to be there for 1.30 and the apps start at 2! I was only out for an hour and 40 mins though, and part was my lunch, so not too much to make up - annoyingly, the directive to put the dilating drops hadn't been transferred when they changed my app, so I drove home so neighbour could take me, and I could have just driven from work and not had as much time to make up. Positive though, no sign of inflammation and eye is nice and white, her boss decided I didn't need a follow up though, which I wasn't best pleased about. I was surprised, while the black spots have practically disappeared, my eye was twinging after the eye pressure test (it was a different one that shone light in your eye). She couldn't suggest much for my itchy eyes, other than it's safe to use both kinds of eye drops. We've finally had our letter confirming no change to Covid restrictions

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments It is easy to think that a system we depend on every day - like this - to communicate would have developed anyway - but the Chinese prove that a lie. Which make me wonder how they use the internet at all. My ignorance doesn't extend to the kinds of keyboards nations with pictogram writing systems need (I recall something about a complex keyboard for writing Mandarin).

And yet, somehow they manage.

The glasses part I know personally - at my age reading glasses are necessary just to know what's for dinner.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, a lovely sunny day, have barely seen my neighbour, trying to take advantage of the sun. Got an e-mail from the energy company saying my meters need replacing, which means I'll have to have a smart meter - suppose I don't have much choice, if I ignore them and something happens, it will be on me - guessing those meters are 20 years old.

We cross posted last night R, I like that, will have to share it!

message 15883: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments DesIey, I laughed at the 'smart thermostat' (ie, wifi enabled) installed in our old house.

Now, its presence in the app on my iPhone is the biggest help in the middle of the night when I'm too hot: I poke it, the air kicks on, and I go back to sleep. With a real one on the wall by the kitchen, I have to get up, walk to it, and get way too much light in my eyes to go back to sleep.

Silly - but helpful.

message 15884: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments Given the thickness of some of our house internal walls, never mind the external, we've never even tried to get anything 'smart' :-)

message 15885: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments 'They' said I have to have a smart meter but then came lockdown, so I have escaped. We had one in our previous house and I didn't find it useful at all as I already watch energy usage like a seagull (almost as good as a hawk).

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening all, glad that I went to the eye clinic on Mon, my eye has been quite swollen and painful today, so I'd have been really worried if it hadn't been checked this week! Have enjoyed the sun regardless though.

I really don't want one Anna, and have resisted for quite a few years, but don't think I can any longer. The only upside is that it's quite tricky to get to my meters in the cellar, so I tend to only do meter readings once a year, so might be easier to keep track on.

Don't they put the smart meter near the old ones?

message 15888: by Anna (new)

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments As far as I remember (ahem!) you don't have to send in smart meter readings as they're magic and tell their masters what you've been doing.

Jim | 21809 comments Anna wrote: "As far as I remember (ahem!) you don't have to send in smart meter readings as they're magic and tell their masters what you've been doing."

Apparently they do it by mobile phone which means our centuries old walls, which block phone signals, mean that they wouldn't work with us :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Oh, my message last night didn't post, try again!

Evening, had a frustrating bad night sleep and quite sinusy today, but quite high humidity. Finished Phase 2 of that awful task at work, but need to help colleagues with some time critical deadlines next week, quite relieved actually! Went to coffee shop at lunch, they had their 4 year old in having his lunch, she was telling him I have cats, as he wants one, but dad is allergic, his solution was to get rid of daddy and buy a new daddy, who isn't allergic to cats, it's a good job I had my mask on so they couldn't see just how funny I found that (its a husband and wife team, so he could hear it)!! Went shopping after work, the McDonalds on the retail park was blocked off by a police transit van, which is a tad worrying! Every shop I went into, even Pets at Home, had Christmas stuff in, I wasn't impressed.

I just hope having it near the existing meters will work and save me worrying about meter readings, or there won't be much point - hadn't considered the thickness of the walls, bearing in mind it's in the cellar

Our electric comes into our house as three phase, and it's twenty feet up, I'd buy popcorn if they try to connect a smart meter to that :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, woke up at 6.30, forced myself to go for a walk, but wasn't really in the mood and without walking friend, no incentive to walk as far as normal. Been a nicer day than forecast though.

Oh, that's helpful to know Anna.
