Funny how I turn up when cake or chocolate are mentioned. Shows I'm keeping an eye on you all... :)

I hate computer aggravation though. Hope it worked out well.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, long day - discovered in my meeting that some things I thought i had done I either hadn't, or they hadn't saved, I did expect to be told off, but nothing was said fortunately. Then had to take some of the amazon delivery to my sister's after work, she was having a crisis, so had to stay longer than I wanted, as I also had to go to the retail park and Aldi, couldn't get the walking sandals I wanted (ironically I can buy them from Amazon and Sports Direct are the seller, but Sports Direct didn't have them in stock!) and lost the will to live by the time I got to Aldi, will have to pop to Lidl to get some stuff I forgot! I did however bump into a colleague as I was walking in! Also, when I went to the Range, I found they have started selling Halloween stuff!!

Clearly you are Anna!!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all, I have been very busy with the Fringe this week and have been spending more time than usual down at the harbour. Loads of people around and plenty of sales and there has been lots of live music and street food to keep us entertained. It has been pretty warm although we have been comprehensively rained upon a few times and yesterday was so windy everything had to be nailed down. Also I met our Jim who is visiting Scotland at the moment so I can confirm that he isn't mythical!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments What a pleasure, actually meeting Jim. You are so lucky.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments How lovely to have a proper meet up. Glad you have had plenty of sales R

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, felt quite drained when I got up - despite the fact I'm getting more deep sleep with my blanket, I'm not feeling the benefit most days! So I decided that as the weather was nice, I'd strip the bed in the hope I could get it dry and back on the bed and go for a walk, it started raining when I was out, luckily the washing was nearly dry, left it on the maiden for a couple of hours and got it back on the bed.

Jim | 21809 comments I'm back
Saw Rosemary and her pictures in the flesh, my lady wife and I got to spend three days with our daughter,
Loved the hairdresser story Desley, you obviously live in a proper community :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Hmm, this mornings message didn't post! Lucy decided that I needed to get up at 6.20 this morning, even though I don't get up that early during the week!! Tried to get back to sleep after medicating her, but gave up after an hour. Not done much today, bit of housework, my new Sunday pamper session, Lucy kept making me lie on the sofa though, clearly how she thinks a Sunday should be spent!

I certainly do Jim - there is a lady in her 90's who lives on the next street who also uses my hairdresser, and due to Covid, she hasn't been going, they always ask if I've seen her, I actually saw her yesterday, her daughter was taking her round the block, first time, so I told her they asked about her, she gave me a message back, so I rang them to tell them. She said she missed the hairdressers too, as it was an afternoon out for her.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Unfortunately, it wasn't the start of a new week computer wise, went to produce the booklet I go in for on a Mon to discover IT hadn't put the software on my machine! So I was late distributing so had to explain to the MD's secretary why. Plus they haven't sorted out my new screen, as the new laptop isn't compatible with the old one - mind you, I've had compatibility issues most of the year, so not worse than I'm used to.

I didn't really see it as anything special Alicia.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening - another day, more IT issues! Two in fact, this morning's was two seconds to set up a favourite, this afternoons did involve two IT people! I went to finish a document to realise there were 3 days of work missing, I felt sick! Found it eventually, but did mean I didn't get as much done as I'd liked. Hopefully will get it finished this week, luckily there is no deadline, it's a little research project I set up myself, so no one really knows what they are getting! I am supposed to be off on Fri though, so only 2 days left to do it.

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Yep, one of the worst feelings ever, especially when you realise it IS permanently lost!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, finally a day without either discovering something or having to contact IT! Managed to finish my document, sent it at 12.15, one of the people I sent it to sent it back in a nicer format at 12.49!! I like Word, he likes Excel. Got some thanks for it anyway, now onto stage 2 of the project, more input and research. Saw on the news today that they've decided we aren't going to get a heatwave this month, just bland weather, but September might be better - I suspect that might change once September arrives. Got my eye app through but its not till mid Sept, and I'm supposed to have a check up after 3 weeks, rang to see if they had any others, as I won't have enough drops, got passed about a bit, but when they gave me the number for the eye clinic, she said she'd e-mail someone more senior than I spoke to, and see if she can bring it forward for me, if not, I have to ring back and they can give me another prescription. Might have to go to a different hospital for the app though.

message 15821: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I think the building of Notre Dame de Paris was launched with less grief than your eye appointments, Desley.

Glad you got your document finished - always good to put things behind you.

We're going to have to decide by tomorrow afternoon if we need to cancel our family vacation - the fires here may keep us from both getting there (Lake Tahoe is on the border between California and Nevada to the east, and the fires are massive) and from being able to enjoy the outdoors if we can.

Hate to disappoint the kids, but also hate the thought that the delta variant might put any of us in danger.

Stay well.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments You wouldn't think it would be so hard!!

Sorry that it is sounding like you might have to cancel your family hol though, I hadn't realised you were being so affected by fires. With regards to the Delta variant, I think disappointment is better than the potential alternative

message 15823: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments We haven't been able to see the kids for SO long, but we've all stayed safe, and I will not risk air travel with so many idiots out there - I'm already immunocompromised and looking for the third shot.

I don't think any of us could live with the results if someone got sick, and going right into the heart of the area already covered by smoke is foolhardy based on the hope that it might clear.

We have it so much better than so many people, with relative safety where we are, and available vaccines. Maybe we'll be able to reschedule soon. Maybe a lot of things.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments It's a shame that this year is still focusing on maybes

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, am off tomorrow but friend didn't think I was able to get it off, so hasn't booked time off, as I only remembered on Mon and had to chase my boss this morning (he has been off), I couldn't face cancelling it, so going to go shopping with neighbour instead. Did end up having to work a bit late though. I laid on the bed reading after work, and was half sat on the weighted blanket, it's very cool, no wonder Lucy has been favouring that over the fleecy one, I will need one to put over it for the winter though!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I've had a really nice time seeing my elder daughter for the first time since Christmas 2019. She's off back to London now.

Alicia wrote: "You nailed it. We were hoping for better. Still are."
It WILL get better.
Just take one day at a time, take small pleasures where you can find them and give small kindnesses whenever you can.
We need to concentrate on what we can change ourselves and hope that the bigger things work out - because we have no control over them.

Desley I wonder if a weighted blanket gives the same feeling of security to an adult as swaddling does to an infant?

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, obv woke up early on my day off, but went back to bed with a cup of tea and watched a film with Lucy, sun is shining, so think I'll go for a walk before neighbour is ready, need to go to the farm stall to pick up my order, and hoping to read a bit after we get back.

That is a lovely thought R. I think that is one of the thoughts about weighted blankets

We are house sitting in Wivenhoe for a week as of later, looking after a friend's lovely little dog. And in eleven days, we fly to Spain to do our crazy thing. Five chapters from the end of the final draft of my latest book which I have to complete before we fly. Clock's a ticking!

Yes it will get better. In fact if you step back you'll notice that covid is no longer the big news story. Afghanistan, should a minister resign, and various other things have pushed it from the top. A lot of the reporting was out of laziness, because the data was being supplied so they might as well write it up

But actually the data isn't showing a horror story, and the current information coming out that vaccinated people carry the virus but don't get especially ill has probably meant that we're going to have to live with it. Unless we test everybody all the time we aren't going to have a clue who's got it and most people are going to stop caring anyway

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, quite a nice day yesterday, we had new neighbours move in late Thu pm, and I bumped into them yesterday, so I introduced myself, and showed her where the shops are. Supposed to rain today, nipped to the shop for something I forgot before that happened, only a small amount of housework, but I'm not as bothered by a quiet weekend anymore, I'm quite enjoying being able to chill out with the cats. Thanks to MT, I've been using magnesium gel on my feet at bedtime for the past week, it has helped dramatically with my foot pain, which is good as the oral version didn't do much.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Jim wrote: "...most people are going to stop caring anyway..."

Unfortunately, I have to care: I can't afford even a mild case - so other people's selfishness means I have to treat everyone as you might treat a carrier of Ebola.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments I'm not sure I'd say it's people's selfishness Alicia, but as Jim says, we are going to have to learn to live with this, which probably isn't a comforting thought for people like you who have underlying health issues. Unfortunately over here, lifting restrictions like not having to wear masks show how many people have given up caring, one thing that surprises me is retail staff no longer wearing them - you'd think with how many people they come into contact with, they'd rather wear them to feel safe, not actually sure I've seen a single shop employee wear one since restrictions were lifted

message 15835: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I was thinking more that IF (a huge IF) everyone had cooperated with PPE when this first started, and then had gotten vaccinated asap, we would probably have conquered covid by now. It IS possible.

Then they could have used contact tracing and all the other epidemiological wonders to take care of the pockets of outbursts that occurred.

In the States all the Cases and Deaths curves are headed back toward the stratosphere. Apparently, we have learned nothing.

I really feel for our medical personnel and admire those who keep working at trying to save the overwhelming number of unvaccinated cases landing in their hospitals. And the much fewer breakthrough cases among the vaccinated. Most of the time being someone in the medical professions hadn't been fatal.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Morning, was supposed to rain all day, but currently dry, so think I might go for a walk, then it'll be a bit of housework and then my Sunday pamper session, doubt I'll finish my book though, as I have 3 hours left, and not sure I'm enjoying it enough to read it for that long.

I think the problem is that the lockdowns worked in that they got cases down, but when we start doing things again, they rise, and we can't live life in lockdown permanently, so I'm not convinced we can conquer it, just find ways to live with it. My brother lives in Jersey who had closed borders and got numbers under control - they opened the borders again and cases have started to rise, so back on restrictions. I don't think we could have got vaccinations organised any quicker, and sadly, you will always have people that refuse to have them.

All the older people at the tills were wearing masks the other day in Sainsburys though I noticed quite a few customers aren't, including a woman who was shoving her stuff onto the conveyor belt right behind me instead of waiting for the person in front of me to pay and allow me go down to the far end.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, kind of regretted the task I was stressing about last week - the three divisional heads have checked it and stage 2 is to log and look into 126 opportunities!! I dread to think how many hours that is going to take! Had a little fall out with neighbour after work, she wasn't happy with how lodger was folding his clothes, so rather than say something, she took over, so I just pointed out they were his clothes, and she took offence - she's done this before, it's like she doesn't like being criticised when she thinks she is helping.

My lady wife has been following the figures for covid infections very closely over the last year or so, watching the government maps down to ward level and has kept the county level maps.

She has come to the conclusion that the current Delta variant seems to be hitting hardest the areas that up until now haven't seen much covid
So the South West, the Isle of Wight and parts of Wales are getting a lot of cases (but not many hospitalised.)
I'm wondering if what is happening is that with so many people who have been vaccinated and/or had the virus, a very large proportion of the population no longer know if they've got the virus or not.
So people who are perfectly fit and well are now going on holiday and are spreading the virus into areas that previously were isolated.
I think we're going to have to do something for the immunocompromised. Because I think a lot of people have now 'moved on' from covid. It's no longer the main thing in the news here. In this area there are still people wearing masks but they're no where near a majority. Barely a quarter?
Certainly a lot of shop staff no longer wear them. Especially if they have screens

message 15841: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments As an immunocompromised person, I now consider it MY responsibility to take care of myself again, and that means everything it meant before: PPE, distancing, washing hands, not touching my face (especially my eyes), watching out for sick people...

I can do all these things. It's not perfect, but it is what we have until we figure out if delta and other variants will burn out some day.

We have several cases of breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated staff (they tell us), so dining has been severely affected. It can happen anywhere - I'm assuming most of the breakthrough cases will be far milder than the ones unvaccinated people get, but can't rely on 'most' when I literally can't afford to get it.

Hope we survive, but we're not helpless, and I've told my doctor and this facility that I expect to be given the booster third shot because of my status the instant it is available to me.

I don't need to be clogging up a hospital bed because I'm extra vulnerable.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, have only managed to get through 7 of the opportunities I needed to input, it seemed a much more involved task when I started! Plus IT have sorted out some other stuff, so another 700+ jobs to do something with, and my colleagues need help for things that have actual deadlines! Crazy to think I was quiet this time last year. Had to go to the chemist after work, bumped into an old friend, we drifted apart about 5 years ago, she was getting really neurotic, but now she is getting divorced, seems much more normal, so have sent her a message so she has my number again, hopefully we can be friends again, she now lives 3 mins away so could be an option for walking. Nearly didn't go and see neighbour, but decided to, she wanted an apology as to her, I had undermined her in front of the person she supports, I did point out that just redoing something he'd done wrong was taking over, and not supporting, but I apologised just for an easy life.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Glad that's sorted out a bit - and that you are recovering an old friend.

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments I see the cases in Cornwall are going up rapidly, and even Colin Bell, of Visit Cornwall, is urging people not to visit again. Makes me mad to see all the visitors mingling so close together. Ridiculous. Most locals still wear masks in shops, and most servers still wearing them too.

message 15845: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments Well with just six days before we leave for our mad trip, my car decided to fall apart on me today. Ah well. Once I've finished this final draft of my book, I'll finally get round to doing all the stuff for the trip I was supposed to have done ages ago. Running out of tomorrows it seems!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, still struggling with this task, think the problem is that as it is so big, it's daunting that I keep avoiding it, so need to figure out a way to break it down, think I will also have to just put the basics on, then spend time looking through documents, it might seem easier that way. Was chatting to the friend I bumped into last night, popped round at lunch to lend her some DVD's, she is going to invite me round for a board game day when she's had the building work done, and she might be free this weekend, when I left she said she was glad we were talking again. Am sure we will have an awkward conversation about what happened, but for now, it's good.

Well, she was also going through the menopause Alicia, but seems much more like her old self now. Hope you do get everything sorted for your trip Stuart!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Ooh I do enjoy zapping a bit of spam :D

Sounds like a fairly huge task you have there Desley, breaking it up into less intimidating chunks sounds like the best option.

Everyone works better with deadlines Stuart ;)

I saw dolphins a couple of days ago! The first time I've managed to see them in 25 years of living here. They are actually regular visitors but I always hear that they've been around about an hour or two after they've gone from sight, but this time I actually caught them. Quite far out - but clearly dolphins

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Wow, that must have been amazing R!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, nice day today, work task started off well, then other things that couldn't wait got in the way, but think I've got to under 100! two meetings tomorrow though. The display on my fitness tracker has been fading a while but didn't think much of it, till today when it stopped completely - my app is still tracking, so it is working, just not displaying anything, so thought I was going to have to buy a new one (it is at least 4 years old, so can't say I haven't got my money's worth!), but neighbour was bought one for her birthday she doesn't like, so she gave me hers. I had a shock when I came to sit with the girls this evening, Chanel was on the rocking chair, first time I've seen either of them on it, had them nearly 4 years! So of course I sat on the floor, but I'd left the laptop downstairs and she'd moved when I came up (quite relieved, knees and feet are sore after just a couple of mins sat on the floor!)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12594 comments Evening, such a busy day that I didn't get much of my task done, I did tell one of my colleagues I did wonder what I was thinking by saying I'd get them on by next week, he just laughed! Had to go to the hospital to get my prescription, luckily I had to go to the ward to collect it to then go to the pharmacy, which meant I could point out they'd given me too many drugs and I didn't need the dilating drugs again, but did let them give me another box of hydrating drops. Then went to Asda to get some treats for the cats, that was an expensive trip! Looking forward to the bank holiday weekend.
