Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening, had a frustrating afternoon which involved a bit of swearing at the computer, and didn't get through my to do list, although did finish a task two days early. Was hoping to have takeaway pizza but despite their facebook page saying they were open for takeaway till 8pm, they were closed at 5.35, so had to have Chinese instead. Can't wait to go and sit in somewhere next week and eat. Patches of heavy rain again today

Glad you had a better day today Lynne

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments We ate dinner on the patio - lovely - next to the water fountain, and with only one other table occupied.

It was a hot evening, but the large umbrella shaded us, and the staff stopped by to chat. We're slowly getting used to eating near other people again.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Does anyone else dislike the new format for the review Updates?

I used to get an email periodically which listed the full reviews of GR reviewers I follow.

The latest one I checked is now a tangled warren of links to click to go elsewhere to see each review - so I can't skim the whole set, but have to decide based on only a few words if I want to read more.

I unsubscribed. I don't have that kind of energy. Clickbait is the bane of the modern world.

Yes that will be a bit step forward. Just to sit in a coffee shop!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments G'day. Weekly shop done.
Yesterday I planted up one of the greenhouse borders with tomato plants. Need to do the other but that means I have to transplant the lettuce seedlings in there. And THAT means I have to dig over the lettuce bed outside. That's the job for today.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Kath, that sounds so refreshingly normal.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening, had my first dental app in over 12 months today, it was very interesting - you have to knock on the door and wait for them to take your name, then wait outside till they allow you in (and of course it started raining on the way!), then a temp check. Had a check up and fortunately the person after had cancelled, so she was able to do some temporary fillings in, when they come out, I'll have to have crowns. The gear they had to put on though - proper mask, visor, apron, gloves, because they were using a drill in my mouth.

Jim | 21809 comments Interesting my dentist just used the kit they'd always used, but given dentists are supposed to be preventing the transmission of aids, covid precautions were barely noticed!

message 15509: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Temperature checks are useless - my normal temp is much lower than other people's, so I can have a fever and still register 'normal.'

But they still insist on checking.

And I don't know what to make of the new CDC recommendation - that you don't need a mask if fully vaccinated - do NOT trust my fellow Americans in general to be safe to be around. Our community is vaccinated - but many of them have family and friends in town.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Alicia wrote: "Kath, that sounds so refreshingly normal."

It is, Alicia, but mainly because they're jobs I do alone.
Today I'll be visiting the farm around the corner for meat. The farmer is a trained vet, the job she did before she married, so the animals are reared to a high welfare standard. They're also outdoor reared and rare-breed. If they weren't being reared for meat, many of these breeds would die out.

Want a trip to the coast (only about 15 miles away) but the weather's turned unpleasant again so that won't happen soon.

Have a good day, everyone.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments We had a bit of a funny day. Last year on our long trip to France our car let us down. It sounded an alarm and the engine management light came on and it worked in safe mode only. He disconnected the battery overnight at the hotel and all went well since. The garage couldn’t find a fault. They’ll have chance to find it on Monday as it did exactly the same today. He thinks he knows what’s up as he’s read up on Jeep forums and thinks he’s found the problem. Garage will see it Monday.
I knew he’d got something on his mind when he wanted to go a decent run today. That was a bit eventful as well. We went to the worms head on the Gower. £6 charge for parking in coins or scan your national trust card. It didn’t accept cards. We could only muster £2 in coins and his national trust card was in his wallet at home. Bum!
We found some where else to park picnic and dog walk for free and as it happened was much less crowded. Car limped home the last thirty miles.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening, I went to a different retail park after work to go clothes and make up shopping - Asda Living for clothes and Boots for makeup, I did need a couple of homeware stuff too. I didn't get one of the things I went for, but plenty of things I didn't, including votives and wax melts! Did stop myself at the reed diffusers though. Was really nice walking round browsing, and both shops had sales on, so both receipts said I saved money! Coffee shop are doing food again next week, so will have to get lunch there either next week or the week after, give them a bit of support. Am that used to saving money though, its a bit hard to splash out! Did the food shopping on the way home too, as I had to drive past Aldi to get home, then had to detour to the chemist for my neighbour, but she did make me some tea - unfortunately I'd bought pizza last night knowing I wouldn't to cook and it's not got a great date (ironic as it's vegan!).

I'm used to a certain level of PPE at the dentist Jim, but not the level they did this week, the apron was actually more of a full body one, the nurse described it as wearing a sandwich bag!! I'm the same Alicia, I run at 36, and feel like I'm running a temp from 36.5, so if I see 37 I don't feel at all well and if it got to 38.8, I doubt I'd be able to leave the house - I have seen 38 once and I could barely get up the stairs - my old doctor knew there was no point using a thermometer on me, she said she could tell by my skin and eyes that I had a temp

message 15515: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I think I just can't create enough energy fast enough to keep up the temperature.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning, second covid jab this morning, so no real plans for the weekend just in case I don't feel well after it, hoping to go for a walk, but friend said last night it is weather dependent, bizarre with the weather we've walked in this year! It is currently raining. If she says no, I'll just pop to the coffee shop and look at the new menu.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Good morning. April showers here. Washing in the tumble dryer again.
I’ve just had a text from Hermes.asking if I wanted my parcel delivering today as I missed it yesterday, (which was possible as I was out all day). Not having ordered anything I put the address of the link on my iPad and Hermes locked site came up. Put in postcode as asked but I noted they had a missed delivery time of Saturday at 10 am. As it was only 8 o’clock I thought it odd but followed the page down looking at the boxes to fill in with name, & address etc. But when I saw date of birth I thought it was a scam
I rang our local Hermes courier who I know and he confirmed it’s another scam. But it looks like their site has been well and truly hacked.
I tried to replicate what I’d done showing OH and that page wouldn’t come up again.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Morning all. It's a bit dark and overcast here. Very busy, have been trying to write something every day and am getting on alright with that. Went metal detecting yesterday and now feel like I am made of something very unbendy, wood, perhaps. Got some cracking finds though; two hammered coins, one from the reign of King John, the other ... dunno ... a victorian half crown which is massive and a george III shilling ... oh and a saxon strap end and a bit of a guilded medieval button. Well chuffed. On the downside, I wrote my blog and discovered that I'd sorted out a whole lot of problems with my current works in progress, which is grand, but not really something I can put on the blog. I don't like sharing too much detail about works in progress in case someone nicks one! (As if). So I'd better go write that blog post now. :-)

Morning all.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I never do anything from emails any more - just go directly to the site, get into my own account, and see what's actually there. That way I never have scam problems - I get plenty of dodgy emails!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Well, just seem a bit more tired since my jab, but then we did a walk straight after. Luckily we walked in a bit of drizzle, the heavy rain started after I'd got home! Just housework and chilling today, hoping to finish my book.

Glad you realised it was a scam before it was too late Lynne. Glad you had a good metal detecting session MT, even though you did suffer for it.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I ordered ear buds from Amazon recently, a package came with a case and accessories but no ear buds. I sorted it out with customer service and they refunded me and I bought another brand. They asked me to review the original order so I did, I said there was NO earbuds in the package. Amazon resolved the problem promptly and submitted it. They’ve just emails me to say my review doesn’t meet their standards. So much for reviews then.

Next time they'll make you write your review before deciding whether to give you a refund or not!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening, started the day with an hour and a quarter safety meeting, which isn't best after a bad night sleep! We had a slight drama going out for tea, but did eventually manage it, and it was really nice eating their food off plates rather than picking up takeaway boxes with it in, neighbour told them she'll come weekly for lemon drizzle cake! We were the only people in there at tea time, so glad we did make it in the end, I did nearly get away with paying less for my tea, but I was honest and pointed out it was too cheap.

I've heard of Amazon doing that a lot Lynne, yet they let people review books based on it arriving and not actually having read it!

Probably not long enough. To keep the bots at bay, they require a certain amount of human engagement. It is frustrating, though, to try to do 'the right thing' and then have it flung back in your face like that.

Same here Alicia. And when I click a 'more' link nothing happens either. I used to just scan the person's review in the email if it looked interesting. Can't be bothered to try and track it down on the site.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening, we seem to have had a day without rain!! I did my usual trip to the candle shop and apologised for not being there to buy anything, they said they didn't mind, in fact, the wife remembered I'd been in previously for a mimosa candle and Woodwick have just brought out one called Seaside Mimosa, so I will have to go back when they come in, to see what it is like. They have now started selling sandwiches, was really tempting to buy one, but I had food that needed eating. Will try it next week though. I did tell them I love going as the smell lingers on your clothes and it's a shame you can't bottle that smell!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I can now report that hugging two of our children - our daughters - after way more than a year - is one of the best things ever.

We had them for part of two days and overnight - in-person is just so much better than zoom (thank you, zoom, for keeping us together during the pandemic).

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening - bit of rain this morning, but been lovely since - not that you'd guess, seeing as Lucy spent at least 2 hours under the duvet this pm!! Luckily the place we went to on Mon are still doing takeaway so gives an alternative to Chinese when my neighbour wants takeaway. Text the woman who runs the coffee shop before, as it was their first day open this year, she said it was really busy, so that is good

message 15535: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Nice to see things reopening - I have an appointment with potential helpers tomorrow. I don't manage anything physical without an assistant, and before we moved I had 2-3 hours from a very helpful young lady 2-3 times a week - and got far more done.

I haven't had one since we clamped down for the pandemic more than a year ago - and never really settled into this apartment the way I'd like, including a little garden on the balcony.

The only problem is that catching up will cost me the energy to work with an assistant - but it will be worth it to become more organized. Being disabled has all kinds of little 'extras' people don't think about when they can wash their own dishes or organize their own closets or pull their own weeds.

I hope to keep writing during the organizing time.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Neighbour fancied lemon drizzle cake again last night, so I offered to walk up and collect – we checked they still had some first! Walked in, and the manager said he knew what I’d come for as he recognised me!! Upside of living in a friendly village, you can text the coffee shop and candle shop, and one of the cafes and the chippy recognise you when you walk in (despite the fact that both of those we’ve only been using since lockdown). It’s one thing I’ve realised during the pandemic – the importance of small, independent businesses, I might go to Costa every week and get the same thing, but the chances of them remembering me are slim, and certainly couldn’t text my order before I walk round, or ask them to put a cake aside and walk in to be given a box with my name and a x on. I did tell both the coffee shop and candle shop owners that I’ve probably seen more of them this year than some of my friends and colleagues, and while both appreciate my business, they are both happy for me to just go and have a chat with them (they probably appreciate being able to speak to someone else!). Obviously raining again today, going to co-op after work

Jim | 21809 comments Yes I've noticed speaking more to people in shops
But I've been dumped with the tesco shop (Lady wife never liked shopping and used the excuse of shielding to dump it on me) and our middle sized tesco on the edge of town (first shop we pass on the way in) has a very corner shop feel, I always end up chatting and joking with staff and they always go out of their way to be helpful
It's not company ethos, it's just nice people ;-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Evening, been to the local retail park and Aldi, was supposed to buy things for 4 people, but the one thing the fourth person wanted wasn't in stock - luckily the heavy rain started while I was half way home! Didn't manage to get everything I wanted though.

I think people have been more sociable in general, I've certainly chatted more to people on walks and in shops, let's just hope that continues!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning, it's supposed to be dry today, but looking a bit overcast, so not convinced! Not walking with friend today, need to go to Lidl to get something for neighbour that Aldi didn't have yesterday, and doing chores as we are going out for lunch tomorrow, so would be nice to not do much before or after.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning, obviously didn't get all the chores done yesterday, have about an hours worth to do today, but should get that all done before we go out at 12.30, then when we get back I can just relax, finish my book. Called in the coffee shop on my way home from Lidl, went with the intention of only getting hot choc, but she had done the blondies I'd hinted at the week before, so felt obliged to try it, then she had some leftover scones and offered to give me one, when I was complaining about my waistline one of the customers said we deserve it after the rubbish year we've had.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Afternoon, we nearly didn't get our meal, but fortunately did, although while the food was nice, the tables were too close together for my liking, even my neighbours d-i-l commented on it. Took them to the candle shop after, they managed to get something they had been looking for, so that was a bonus. They had sold out of what I wanted though, so will be going back on Thursday.
