Great - attitude helps a lot. Rehab may hurt some (okay - I have no idea, but rehab for spinal surgery did), but you'll be so happy soon after, and not have pain when you go out and look for warlord graves with your metal detector!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Doesn’t this damn virus complicate everything
It’s bad enough planning to go for elected surgery when you’ve got family and commitments without all the rigmarole of isolation etc.
We are going to have to be very careful timing our return as the car needs mot, tax and insurance and getting those ducks in a row at a distance is bad enough. We will have 14 days quarantine when we get home. I know that. We accept that but it does have complications.
I had to jump through verbal hoops yesterday taxing my car. I can’t tax or sorn it online without either the reminder document or the V5. It’s a number in that’s only on those document that you have to fill in or the form won’t work. Both will be at home- but I’m not so I tried on the phone. I have the VIN number and registration of course. They’ve agreed to tax it, she had to ask a supervisor - if I hadn’t I could have had a fine. Who tries to tax another persons car? It can’t be many.

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Glad you got the date sorted, MT - everything takes so much more effort to organise and think through now. Agree that who-knows-what the next months will bring, so good to get it done. Hope all goes well.

Sorry you're in pain, Desley. Hope your eye is getting better.

The island will be waiting for you when travel is on the cards again.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Well, even though the specialist said my eye was moderately inflamed, it isn't as severe as last year, I do feel sick, but the blurred vision isn't as bad as it was so it is easier to work, and although I only got a brief chat with my boss, I think he OK'd me to work at home all next week - he commented that I worked in the office last year, and I pointed out that I could get lifts from colleagues last year, that's not acceptable this year, and I don't want to get on a bus either. One of the other directors told me it was perfect timing, with cases rising and them promoting working from home. As long as the weather doesn't get worse we are going food shopping after work.

Unfortunately not Alicia, I'm subject to our NHS's rules, but grateful they got me in in less than 2 hours. So glad you have a date now MT, I don't understand how the isolation is just for you, surely there is a risk with the others still going out? Glad you hopefully got the car taxed Lynne!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Yes I’m all sorted with car tax. I looked it up on line and its taxed till November 2021. Little lads arm seems not to be bothering him too much. He can move his fingers. It might be more painful if he’s got to go to school though, but he’s got to have it checked at the fracture clinic next week.
There’s several large cities in France closing restaurants and bars totally also making masks compulsory in the streets as well as establishments.

I don't know the rules, but that does seem to put a lot of power in the ONE doctor you get to see. Doctors are not replaceable widgets - and not infallible. And getting the same treatment again, when it didn't work very well before, is concerning. I'm used to being able to change when I don't like what I'm getting - it made a huge difference when I changed cardiologists.

Glad they got you in right away, though. That is reassuring.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Rather tired today, weather is rubbish so think I'm just going to alternate between housework and TV. Boss did ring me back after work, he is fine with me working from home, but if I feel I cant do enough work I have to ring him to discuss. Had to ring the eye ward yesterday, my vision didn't seem blurry enough, but she said it was fine - it does seem blurrier today (although I can still type OK), so maybe just needed time to kick in. I had to pop in the chemist with my neighbour yesterday, they had some over the counter nausea tablets, so I got some just in case.

It's a public service Alicia, so you get to see who is on that day, I haven't seen the same doctor twice. Glad you have confirmation that your car is taxed Lynne

Not seeing the same doctor twice would be devastating - they're not robots, and each one has different opinions on 'best treatment.' New people are a chore for me - I'd make no progress ever!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Thundering and lightning thus morning. When it rains here it really means business. Nothing soft about it like Welsh rain. It’s all or nothing. At least it will keep the stink bugs away. They were horrible yesterday. Sneaky creepy things even come through the keyhole, they probe any cracks in blinds and just sit in the fold of the curtains. Last night I was just sitting with my cup of camomile tea in bed when one zoomed straight at me. I ducked and it landed on my pillow. I think I woke the neighbours. I did yell a little. They probably thought it was OH’s lucky night. 😀

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Morning all, feel really drained today, currently contemplating what I really need to do today and what can be left. Got a new bed ordered yesterday, should hopefully be here on Sat, just need to figure out how to get rid of old bed and get new bed put up now. I did say that when the bed needed replacing I would do the carpet too, but that seems too much hassle at the moment, and not enough time. Neighbour has offered her leftover floor paint if I want to just pull it up and paint it until things settle, but not sure about that.

Yes, it can be tricky Alicia and I do wonder how many they employ as I never see the same ones! On the other ward, where I have to go for checkups, there are normally 3 on. Sorry the weather isn't great there Lynne.

I'm so pleased that we seem to have found a reasonably quiet flat here. Touch wood. I had read a lot about noise problems in buildings here. having said that, there seems to be quite stringent noise laws that are actually enforced.

message 14476: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Bless you, there's not much anyone can do. The hardest part, by a country mile, is the isolation. Instead of just going down there on Sunday night, staying in a hotel and sauntering along the quay in the morning, I have to arrive fresh from my own place by car, untainted by contact with anything outside my own home at 7.00 am, which means leaving at 5.00am.

Likewise, instead of staying down there in a hotel, or maybe with friends, and enjoying a weekend looking at the sights and visiting me, McOther and McMini aren't allowed to visit me I don't think.

I also have to attend a pre op session, without using public transport. It's not even like McOther and McMini can bring me down in the car and go look at HMS Belfast or something while I'm in there. Because if they did that, returning home in the car with them would break my isolation and my op would be cancelled.

So I have to drive down there, park in a special designated space and drive home. My car does pretty good mileage on the open road but in town, it guzzles petrol, and it only has a six gallon tank. So I have to take a can of petrol with me so I can top up to get home if I have to ... because the six gallons might not get me there and back. And it's on Saturday, which is good but ... what if there's a demonstration? What if I book a space but something happens and when I get there, they haven't allocated me one. It's Saturdy, there'll be no-one to help if the logistics go tits up but if I go on the Friday, there will be traffic and running out of petrol is pretty much a given. It's so scary.

The other alternative is if the McOthers drive me down there but then they have to sit in the car for hours because if they get out, they break my isolation, although I guess they'd be allowed in the hospital to have a wee because they'll have been isolating with me and be considered pure. I'm way, way more nervous about the logistics of making it to the pre-op appointment and back, not to mention getting to the hospital on the morning, than I am about having the ends sawn off my femur and ... the other one!

Crazy innit?

Cheers

MTM

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Well, I was persuaded yesterday to take the bed apart ready for the new one coming next weekend, but I had a really bad night sleep – mattress isn’t quite as comfy on the floor! We’ve done a social value newsletter, which I’ve been included in, which is quite nice. Had a really hectic morning, which isn’t good when you are tired!

Glad you had a bit of a reprieve from the noise R! Nice to hear from you Patti. Urgh MT, those logistics sound awful, my neighbour is waiting for her back surgery, so I’m going to end up in a similar position, as I’m obviously going to have to drive her – suspect when she gets her date I’ll have to speak to my boss, as I won’t be allowed in the office as I have to drive her – guessing no one else will be able to, as I’m in a support bubble so classed as the same household. Don’t think we can visit her either.

Logistics are a pain during a pandemic. Heck, everything is a pain during a pandemic.

The precautions don't seem exaggerated, but they are supremely inconvenient. They should let you stay overnight or something. You can't possibly be the only one with the problem!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) wrote: "Didn't realise how much noise stresses me out..."

How do you deal with it?

I keep little orange sponge earplugs everywhere - the least expensive way to buy them was in a box of 200 packages!

Noise is relentless - they might as well pound on your head with a sledgehammer. I'm with you. Our new apartment overlooks the front entrance, and it's where all the fire engines and ambulances park. They don't use the sirens here, but we can hear the diesel engines at all hours. Took a while to ignore them most of the time.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments It's the unpredictability of the noise that is the problem. Mainly caused by the fact that some days the workers don't turn up until 3pm and then work until 7. But we know that they will finish, eventually. And when there are no tradesmen, the neighbours are actually very quiet. (and they should be spending half the year in Spain at their other property...)
Although at the moment we can hear every word they say in the kitchen as they have removed so much of the walls and ceiling. I look forward to telling them that!!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Rosie, tell them and they’d might put extra soundproofing type insulation while they are renovating. My neighbours are musicians. He built a studio in their basement for their son who plays in a group. I can’t hear a thing it’s really well done but I used to hear the previous neighbour’s every move. When he scraped his chairs over the tiles it was one if ‘those’ noises that really grate.
Be thankful they haven’t got a dog!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Slept better last night, but I did find myself moving the TV at silly o clock, not sure why I felt the need to do that! Amazon decided to send subscribe and save early again (should arrive on 16th), but the man scanned it as delivered as he was getting out of the van, so my phone told me it had been delivered when I was sat downstairs waiting for it, so a minor panic thinking it had gone to the wrong address, but just as I was getting my shoes on to check it wasn’t somewhere else, he walked down the street with it! As it came 4 days early, I’m really glad I was on. So far, I’ve just taken advantage of cat food offers on Prime Day (and not just for me!), no sign of the membership offer I was hoping for. Might be able to get a couple of presents though.

Freaked me out the first couple of times, too.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Our patisserie has closed for their holidays and the other baker closes on Wednesday so we went in the car to the next village and a dog walk in the woods up there. OH thought he’d park and I’d get out to get bread and croissants for his breakfast. He parked a long way from the shop and as it was his idea I ‘suggested’ he went to get them. I wish I hadn’t. It must have been my fault his glasses steamed up with his mask and he tripped over a step he couldn’t see. I’ll never hear the last of that. He did buy me a pain au chocolat with almonds. It was divine. It was full of chocolate and frangipane. So much in it and it was warm. I’m looking fiwprward to next Wednesday for another one already.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Urgh, another bad night sleep, so glad I wasn’t in the office today, I reset the alarm clock! One of the neighbours has kindly cut up the bed frame to fit in my car so I can take it to the tip when I can drive, so just the headboard and mattress at the weekend. I do seem to have some new floaters, hoping they are temporary, as the one I developed last year doesn’t seem as obvious at the moment. Got a check up on 4th November. Looks like my mum needs to go back in hospital, my sis seems quite stressed, but there isn’t much I can do to help at the mo, I can’t even offer to take the kids somewhere for her. Forgot to mention on Mon I had a phone call from someone saying they were from my insurance company checking whether I needed to make a personal injury claim, I told him I had had one similar a couple of weeks ago so was suspicious, he said he would look into it and ring back, unsurprisingly, I haven’t had another call!

I’ve never had it quite so early Alicia, although the other Sunday, it was one stop away for ages, and then the pin disappeared off the map! More coming today (yesterday said Fri, now they’ve decided to come today. I’m not complaining, just grateful I actually will be in for it, Amazon make it hard to plan!). Oh dear Lynne, hope OH didn’t injure himself. Pastry sounds divine!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Slept through till 6, woke up and decided to close my eyes till the alarm went off at 6.30. After a bit I thought it felt like more than half an hour, it was nearly 7! Clearly forgot to set the alarm last night. Last of the amazon deliveries today, figured that as I’d saved on my cat food, I could treat myself to 2 nail varnishes, as I couldn’t decide between them! Well, my mum has gone back in hospital, she was shouting again this morning, ambulance came out and said she had a high temp and irregular heartbeat (yet she had both the COPD team and out of hours doc out yesterday, one said low sats and high heart rate, second said everything was normal!)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Just a brief post, the consultant rang this morning and said that my mum wasnt responding to treatment so they were going to stop and just make her comfortable, and warned us that she would have a matter of hours, so my neighbour took me over, I was only allowed to stay an hour, I left at 1.25 and she passed away at 2.40, so glad I was able to get there so soon and that my bro suggested a video call so she could hear all of us

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12595 comments Well, an interesting day yesterday. While waiting for my bed, I had some flowers delivered from my two colleagues, they had got her to put as much purple as possible in them, bless them. I got a couple of sympathy cards in the post, one was delivered with just my first name and first line of my address, it was from my old receptionist, she got her husband to make sure it got here, bless her. I did end up with a second bunch of flowers too. The bed was a nightmare, and I had a very stressed cat after it, when we finished, my neighbour gave me two cards, she'd got one for all the street to sign, which was lovely. Think I made a bit of a mistake going for a firm mattress, I slept through till 4, then when I woke up it felt like I was sleeping on wood. Still feel drained and really have to do some housework today, or me and the cats aren't eating. Very odd having a double bed, not used to being able to touch both sides of the bed

Oh dear Lynne, glad the drive was worth it though.
