Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Neck is a bit stiff this morning, but didn’t affect me being able to drive. Had a one-to-one this morning, so much more enjoyable than with the old boss, this was more like a nice chat, and updated him with some of the changes, like not volunteering anymore. Think I might do the food shopping on the way home.

Wow, that sounds like a task and a half Lisa! Glad it is done and you are happy with the end result. Hope you don’t get affected by the weather Lynne, think we have a storm over here this weekend.

Are you high enough that flooding won't affect you? Or do you need to have a plan to get to such a place? Roads can be a problem. Hope you can shelter in place - going out in the midst of bad weather is no trifle.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Happily no flooding Alicia. We are in a fortified village it’s set on a hill with a lovely view of the coast. There couldn’t be any river type flooding only if drains block and standing water runs under a door type flooding. We are 550 metres up.
There’s bad flooding north of Nice where a road bridge was washed away and that was dramatic, it took the electricity supply and the water main and two people are missing.
We’ve got buckets under a leaky roof in the cave under the terrace though. That will be an expensive fix.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I regret being a bit flippant yesterday when I’ve just seen that 12 people are now missing. Including 2 firemen and a gendarme in the night. The villages north of Nice have been badly affected with floods and landslides.
Lovely day here now though. neighbours are all are cleaning up debris and making sure drains aren’t blocked as there’s more rain forecast.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We've got the rain here now Lynne, been falling steadily since before 6. The neighbour's builders are in too. The noise just goes on and on - that's the 24th day now. (I think there was one Sunday when nothing happened) There doesn't appear to be much of the original interior left now. The Meek Husband keeps filling his car boot and is doing multiple trips to the dump. Clearly sh'e too mean just to order a skip like a Normal Person.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Morning all, neck a bit stiff still, so going to the hairdresser will be interesting! Then going to the food fare, and need to get things for a couple of friends, I have been naughty, the yankee candle shop are doing subscription boxes, 20 wax melts for £20, really good price, although I don't need any more - hope I don't get too many I don't like, although whatever I don't will go on the charity pile, thought it might be a nice way of being introduced to things I wouldn't normally try. they do have some good offers on, so I might come back with more! It is raining here too

Wow, that sounds an awful situation Lynne. Sorry that neighbours are still doing renovations R

message 14407: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Marie Gabriel (lisamariegabriel) | 1066 comments Raining here too, though not at catastrophic like in France. Our two visiting black cats are no show, so they must be putting their paws up in front of a neighbour's fire somewhere. It puts my mind at ease if they are moochers rather than strays. Colin has another pre-op eye appointment on Tuesday, I need to arrange my annual MOT with the surgery and we still have to arrange one for Babs at the vet - if they will admit me without a mobile phone, hence the delay.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Morning all, it’s throwing it down here. I have an appointment in London to have my MRI scan and an X-ray followed by an appointment with the consultant. Looking forward to doing lots of writing on the train! Yes!

I’m sorry to hear everyone’s been struggling. I have a bit which is why I haven’t been on here. Knee is being a bastard. So annoying but so glad I am in the throes of getting something done. It’s a very popular consultant so there’ll probably be a long waiting list but as I understand it, the NHS one here is three years.

Cheers

Sad to hear. Extreme weather is terrifying. Stay safe.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Morning all, it has actually stopped raining! Had a nice day yesterday, but was very tired (my own fault, I left my drink in the car, and timing meant I skipped lunch, I really need to learn that missing food/drink makes me very tired). I didn't have enough cash on me for the stuff I had ordered at the food fayre, the two stall holders did tell me I could pay next time (one has known me for years, the other has only met me once) but I went and found a cash machine. Did well with the wax melts, only 3 I don't like, the rest I'll give a go, and he had my favourite two back in and they were on 10 for £10 (normally £1.79 each), so did buy some. Bit of housework today

Good luck with all your appointments Lisa, when I go for my flu jab next week, I need to book in my annual blood test and asthma review. Good luck with your appointments MT

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’ve had one of those Facebook memories come up and 5 years ago there were floods with 17 people lost in the region. The damage was not as devastating as it didn’t sweep houses away like Friday’s storm.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Wow, that's a spooky memory

message 14415: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Lynne, that sounds like such a terrible storm. The storm certainly battered Jersey a bit but nothing like the experience in your area, just mainly trees down here.

So terribly sad to read about Kay.

Not been on here since August. I feel as if my life has shrunk to working at the day-job (mainly from home) and running the online book festival site, plus living in a building site. And that's it.

At least the renovation work is nearing the end. Should be finished by Christmas. They started in May last year!

facebook keeps doing that!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Not a good day today, bad night sleep, then saw the headlines that there had been an issue with the number of cases so our figures have shot up and we are now 3rd and then we got an e-mail from our H & S director, two staff have tested positive – one I’ve not seen since March, one I did see last week, fortunately I had to duck out of a meeting that he was in, so I didn’t get that close to him (never been so grateful for a one-to-one!). And now a colleague has gone home with symptoms, but luckily didn’t get close to her on Fri. Spoke to a colleague and we are trying to have all our meetings on teams now, annoying as I didn’t like the pipeline one over teams. At least it isn’t raining!

Glad the storm wasn't too bad for you Kelly. Sorry that life feels a bit boring for you, hope the renovations do finish this year

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Eh up. Hope you're all coping? I've been distracted these past few weeks with the 124k book I'm joint editing. 22 crime stories by some great authors, in aid of an education charity. Haven't written a word of my own work for quite a while but hope to get back to it when this mighty tome is published.

Keep safe, everyone. This thing isn't going away. :(

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Miserable weather here, typical as I have my flu jab after work and you have to wear short sleeves and stand outside till called in! Things got worse yesterday, we are now second in the table. Just on the phone to TalkTalk, wanted to cancel my entertainment boost, I’ve watched everything from the channel I’m losing, and she is trying to negotiate a broadband deal for me.

Maybe Jim, but maybe things seem to be getting worse despite the extra measures! I think part of my problem is this is the time of year I have things to look forward to (Jersey, my birthday), but as Jersey changed the travel restrictions on Sat, I can't go as I'd be subject to a 14 day self isolation period!

message 14421: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Sorry to hear that, Desley. I know how you love to visit your brother and his family.

message 14422: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21809 comments That's grim Desley
A chap I know missed his mother's funeral on the Isle of Man because of the fortnight self isolation requirements
They would have let him attend the funeral but he'd have had to enter the church through a different door, not gone anywhere near anybody, sat entirely separately etc
So he watched it filmed on somebody's phone that they set up for him

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Luckily it stopped raining when I needed to leave for my flu jab, so I walked to the docs, I got there early and was in and out before my appointment time! No receptionists, they just had the two nurses waiting in the entrance, checked you were feeling well, then they have altered the waiting room so there is no seats, just a screen in the middle, so very speedy. Did well with TalkTalk, reduced my bill from £39 to £27.50 and it will be less for my first bill as they need to refund me for the boost I cancelled yesterday. Got to change my days in the office though, the MD wants a report printing every Monday (he’s been getting it alternate Mon/Tue since August, and only electronically before then!)

Thanks Kelly, reading your latest book, as it’s the closest I’m going to get this year! This year I really wanted to go over for Halloween, my nephew just turned 8 and it’s on a Sat this year, so thought it was an ideal time to do it, just glad that I didn’t book flights when they were released in March. That is my other worry Jim, if something happens to my mum, how my brother will be able to get over, as he would no doubt be subject to similar restrictions. It is good how we have utilised technology to ‘attend’ things remotely, my telephone befriendee has watched a lot of church services on her tablet, even the one from her original parish in Scotland that she hasn’t been to for years.

It's the old question, how do you build a supportive 'on line' community?

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Offered a knee replacement on 26th October. Wanted to rip their arm off but a) it's half term and b) obviously it's the law that McOther has a deal completing the week before and is working on the premise it will run over. A one and a half hour drive into central London for 7.00 am is not going to be conducive to pointy brained negotiations at that point. On the up side, no school run to deal with.

That said, as McOther joked, the deal will expand or contract to ensure that completion week is the week I have the op, whenever we schedule it. Sod is watching, rubbing his hands, with his book of law at the ready.

That is a massive pisser because I can see us going back into lock down and my having to suck up another two or three months' worth of evil pain. Unless they are continuing to operate because we're all self isolating.

On the up side, McOther's health insurance have approved the op. So for the first time in over fifteen years, I should be looking at a reduction in pain levels at some point in the future ... even if it's not right now.

I have to isolate for two weeks first. I am desperate to take the first date, but it's impossible to get there without the McOthers because there's no-one in London to collect or park my car. I would have to be dropped off. Public transport taxis et al are a no because that would break my isolation. Fucking bloody covid. Sorry.

Anyway, the surgeon's sec has gone off to see if she can find some more dates.

I just want to say yes to 26th ... but it's not really fair on the McOthers. Although the surgeon's secretary said they used to do Thursdays (she's been off on Maternity leave and this is her first day back) so she's just going to check that.

Ho hum ...

Cheers

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Blimey, I've missed this whole page! How did I do that? How did I get so far behind.

I'm not sure our services are zoomed now. They were but the tech savvy clergy have left. We now have one newly ordained lady, a non-stipendary and a lot of retired clergy who have stepped into the gap to keep services going at 8 churches. They are extremely busy.

Knackered today, did a lot of walking on Monday when I went to London for the consultation and used all my spoons.

Cheers

I might be able to change his mind if I have a chat later. I wanted to get it nailed today so I spoke to him just before he left for a day of meetings.

He's in a panic about it because when the deals are on he is just absent. He works from 7 am until 9 pm and I take up the slack at those times. In non-covid going into the office times we hardly see him. If his co-member on the domestic team is down over a deal he will be really struggling to get McMini to and from school and sort everything out on his own. Also, whereas I'm thinking, 'great let's get this done before lock down,' he's the absolute antithesis of a let's do this kind of guy. He's a 'let's think about this for three weeks, at least, before we even contemplate making a decision,' so the fact this whole process has taken about a fortnight is the equivalent of bouncing him into it. He's panicking. And of course the negotiations and the work load is huge already anyway, so even coming out of it to think about this stuff is a major stress. Also ... 7 am ... one and a half hours away. That's leaving the house at 5.am With our son (which is the hard bit).

If it wasn't for bloody covid I could just go down on the train. Stay there the night before and he'd be OK.

So if I set out some pros and cons and wait to hear form the surgeon's secretary. Then I can leave him the evening to think about it and confirm with the surgeon's secretary tomorrow.

Cheers

MTM

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Well, as if things weren’t bad enough, my eye looked a bit red when I was brushing my teeth last night and slightly painful, woke up and it looked similar, so rang the eye ward, they got me in at 10am, it is iritis again! So dilating drops for a week, and steroid drops for 6 weeks, there is obviously the risk it will make my cataract worse. I’m also worried he is just doing the normal treatment and it didn’t work well last year. So need to get hold of my boss to see if I am OK to work from home until I Can drive again, as in the current climate I’m not happy to use public transport and get lifts. Hopefully the blurred vision won’t make working too hard (I did have to have time off sick last time due to feeling sick) as we have changed our sick pay due to Covid, I’d be on SSP rather than full pay. Hospital are really strict, half a dozen questions before they will give you an app, someone at the door refusing to let you go in without santitising and making you wear one of their disposable masks. And the bed slat we fixed the other year went again last night, think I might have to buy a new bed this time. Apparently the local park has had police cordons and CSI in this morning, and now we have a flood alert! Can I just lie in bed with the quilt over me??

I think it’s quite nice actually Jim and hope it’s something that does get continued. I think we have a very supportive online community. Fingers crossed grandsons wrist heals well Lynne. Glad you have managed to get it sorted MT, doesn't give you much time to get things sorted before your quarantine - is it just you, or all of you?

Couldn't agree more. There are ALWAYS problems - but you need to put yourself first. Otherwise, you'll wait, and something ELSE will come up.

I'm not doing surgery because, with the CFS, recovery takes about ten times longer. But you can recover - and it will make things so much better.

Get started on the treatment - and look for other options. Do you have access to other doctors? A second opinion?

And then go hide under the quilt.
