A mate of mine is a head master, Patti and on Tuesday he was losing a teacher an hour who had to go home because they'd got symptoms.
He reckoned he'd have to close the school by today because he wouldn't have enough staff left
Apparently whilst the schools are shutting, some are to remain open to provide child care for key workers
Up at 5.30, gave up at 6.30, so I've rearranged my computer desk, half done a litter tray and put some washing up in to soak! Got the dentist at 8.30, then going to call in the office to get some stuff to work from home. At least the weather has improved, so we can all get some fresh air. Mouth more comfortable, but yawning still hurts.Glad you are working from home Kelly, although do make sure you stick to a schedule, can't have you making yourself ill! I agree with that Lynne, so tempting to just keep checking those e-mails! I had to force myself last night to just search for one from my boss and ignore the rest of them.
I saw this yesterday online:Someone had gone to Paignton for a funeral as a last trip. The guest house had already lost £ 10K of trade in cancellations, and no new bookings coming through. As a guest house they were too small to be considered a small business for the aid package. Accordingly, they would be eligible for up to £ 10K as a maximum, if their insurance company refused a claim. But as the travel reductions remain 'strong advice' not mandatory, they can't make a claim - so no small business relief or assistance will be paid.
Why do I feel no surprise?

I had this discussion with somebody, firstly government cannot just ban people travelling. A lot of our industries depend on skilled workers who move about the country. Not everything can be done on line. I remember one pub I went into where they had guests who were all working in town for a couple of days.
Secondly the NHS was saying they will want hotels etc open because they may have to relocate staff at short notice and need somewhere for them to stay
This crisis has split the economy into three groups. Those who can genuinely work from home, those who cannot but whose work isn't vital, and those who cannot and have to keep working.
Will post properly later, but what a morning! Dentist didn't go well, the crown took more of the tooth off so unsalvageable, but it is too far down to be extracted at the dentist, it will need surgical extraction. normally that would be done within 2 weeks, but in the current climate she doesn't know! Then had a message off my sister saying she'd had to ring an ambulance for my mum, turns out her COPD is worse, but she didn't want us to know, but they are now treating her for sepsis, so really not looking good, as her COPD is now Stage 4. Have been working from home today, but can't say I've been as productive as usual. Spoke to my boss, think the plan is for us to work from home as much as possible, but I support our admin team, and they have someone on holiday next week, so might get called in to assist
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Will post properly later, but what a morning! Dentist didn't go well, the crown took more of the tooth off so unsalvageable, but it is too far down to be extracted at the dentist, it will need surg..."So sorry to hear about your mum Desley.
McMini’s school shuts today but he was sick last night so he’s off. He seems in good form though.
Just off to the post office - picking up a package from outside a friend’s house, who has it ... probably. No longer deaf in my right ear but deaf in my left ear now. Still onwards and upwards.
Cheers

Had to deliver a couple of small packages today, despite the isolation thing.I have rediscovered the childhood joy of knocking on a door and running away
Will wrote: "Had to deliver a couple of small packages today, despite the isolation thing.I have rediscovered the childhood joy of knocking on a door and running away"
Mwahahahargh! Love it.
I need to write a blog post now ... but McMini has decided to be chatty and how can I refuse ...?
Cheers

Except they will be grateful instead of annoyed.
Anyone watching today's announcement?Great stuff from the Chancellor, in terms of content and the way he delivers it.
Then it cuts back to Boris mumbling nonsense and trying to crack shit jokes.
Fuck off Boris.
Thanks for the wishes, she is still hanging in, we got to see her, but she was barely conscious, so don't think she really knew we were there. just waiting for an update now. Remembered when we got back that I had been given some antibiotics, but my chemist shuts at 6, but have decided to close 5-6! So will have to try tomorrow, but didn't notice what time they are shut for lunch. Remembered to ring the doc, they have issued my prescriptions, even though one should have a blood pressure check first! Then had to go to co-op again, to see if they had paracetamol yet, as neighbour had been to 4 places, apparently our cheap shop told her they don't even know when they will be getting any! I treated myself to a carrot cake muffin, think I deserve it after today, I haven't had my normal amount of food and drink, so very headachy and drained. seen some interesting headlines, but can't be bothered watching the talks. Not that I've put the TV on since this morning
Hope your Mum gets quickly treated Desley, is she far away from you for visiting although our hospital is limiting visiting. Hope you feel better soon too.
Thanks, apparently she has been moved to a ward, sat up and having an argument! The ward only allows visiting for an hour a day, so will go tomorrow, although now she is awake she might not want to see me.
Sorry to hear about your mum, Desley. Take care of yourself as well. Will, your "doorabella" comment made me laugh. Did anyone else call it that?
Social-distancing now in place in Jersey plus self-isolation for anyone arriving in the island.
As dave and I have only a shared laptop, school has kindly provided us with a second.its pretty rubbish but will have to do.
I can't imagine sharing a single laptop with the spouse. We'd have an argument from the very first day: I'm a Mac person; he's the other thing. Though he has learned to use an iPad quite well.
Stay well, Patti and Dave.
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Thanks, apparently she has been moved to a ward, sat up and having an argument! It takes energy, and when she can still spend some that way, it is encouraging. Hope you get to see her tomorrow.
Desley, glad your Mum is a bit better. Hope you get to see her today ... I haven’t read or watched the news ... I need to or I’m going to be contravening regulations. At least now that gyms, restaurants et al are ordered to close they will receive insurance compensation. It’s going to be strange though ... I think I’m lucky in that Mum can’t really go into proper isolation, because she has carers, so I’m going to list myself as ‘carer’ and carry on going to see her anyway.
I hope you are all ok. I felt a bit breathless last night and had a cough, but it’s gone this morning, and anyway, I still have one ear full of gunk, even if it’s the other one, so I won’t be able to tell until I’ve syringed that. Off to write my weekly blog post now.
Cheers
MTM
Glad you can still see your mum, MT.Oh, Patti - my brain can't comprehend sharing a laptop. I'm attached to mine. Hope all good with you and Dave.
Jersey now has social-distancing in place as of yesterday. All arrivals into the island to self-isolate for 2 weeks. Most people who can work from home are. We must be about 2 weeks or more behind the UK in the spread of you-know-what.
Ah well, best just get on with it. Stay safe & well.
Morning, was awake at 6.20, but did manage to get back to sleep for a bit. Feel better than I expected after yesterday, although I appear to be snuffly. My mum has made it through the night, will speak to my sis in a bit about visiting. Need to go to the chemist and might get some milk while I'm out, save the stuff in the freezer for an emergency. At least the sun is out, although it is really windy, but apparently we can't even go for a walk round the local lake, that has been barriered off. Wow, sharing a laptop mustn't have been fun Patti, at least you have a second, even if it isn't great. Glad you are still able to see your mum MT.
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "Thanks, apparently she has been moved to a ward, sat up and having an argument! The ward only allows visiting for an hour a day, so will go tomorrow, although now she is awake she might not want to..."Bit of good news
I posted a cat picture for you on the blog as well :-)
M.T. wrote: "I hope you are all ok. I felt a bit breathless last night and had a cough, but it’s gone this morning, ..."I know how you feel. Had a sore throat yesterday, bad by the time I went to bed and I didn't sleep well.
Given I have no temperature and have coughed once since 2am, I'm assuming it's just a sore throat :-)
How do, each. Glad Mum's picked up a bit, Desley.Swinging into full allotment mode in the back garden. It'll be a while before there's anything to eat, though.
Theres two whopping wood pigeons in my garden. They are bigger than ducks. They are safe from me though I can shoot straight but I couldn’t eat one. I nearly passed out In a restaurant years ago. They served pigeons to the next table so ‘pink’ I couldn’t eat my own dinner. It’s been really cold and windy here. Didn’t stop the loads of people aimlessly walking round the town though. I watched from the window. People are complaining about an influx of visitors - some think the summer holidays have started. 😡
The menage a trois of wood pigeons in our garden are serial shaggers. Seriously they never stop...People seem to be around and about as normal here. I've stayed in my own house and garden all day but apparently the High Street was as busy as anything (it was a nice day so people come to the beach). Also there seems to be some sort of family gathering going on in the downstairs flat. Idiots.
Glad your mum perked up a bit Desley. Presumably there are also the usual cold viruses around Jim, hope it's just one of those.
Another long day! Got to the chemist, got asked if I was happy to wait for my ab's as they would take 30 mins - pointed out I needed them yesterday after the dentistry work, but they had closed early, so yes, they were essential. I nipped to the co-op for milk while waiting, neighbour rang just as I had got to the end of the car park asking if I could pick her some stuff up, so ended up going to Sainsbury's as well. At least got all my meds, and finally some paracetamol for the elderly neighbour, who left the money on the bin so she didn't have to come into contact! My mum actually agreed to see me, she is clearly feeling better as she was rather ungrateful about things, had asked the nurse to ring us to tell us not to go and visit, but got told no, they need to bring your glasses etc! She doesn't want us going back tomorrow though. Friend has been for her litter, so at least everyone has enough stuff for a while, so that makes me feel better. not done enough housework, and have a sore throat now, think it is the dryness of the hospital, having to wear masks, and not having eaten or drank enough the last two days (partly as I am still restricted what I can eat, wish I hadn't let the dentist glue that crown back on, could eat much better when it fell off than I can now it has been pulled off). Thanks for the pic Jim, I'll have a look tomorrow. There did seem a lot of people about, the florist was still doing a good trade.
Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) wrote: "Presumably there are also the usual cold viruses around Jim, hope it's just one of those...."
I suspect there's a lot of hacked of cold viruses muttering to themselves about the new kid on the block getting all the glory :-)
Was awake at 5.30, have tried to get back to sleep but not much success. Looks a lovely day outside, not sure what we are able to do though. Do need to do some housework, and move some of the junk near my computer desk in case I have to use my camera for our daily team meetings!
Just had a Happy Mums day text from daughter. I asked her if she'd had some lovely cards from her 2 little 'uns. But no - daddy forgot!! she said the 3 yr old had brought her some chocolate from her last Nursery session - but she ate it! That's my girl!Going for a brief walk round the block after breakfast, to enjoy the sunshine (if not the cold wind)
Good morning everyone. Back in the north east, not back at work until Wednesday and trying not to think about what it's going to be like! Got myself sorted with a bit of a system for my uniform for after work, definitely don't want to be coming home in that! I hope everyone's keeping safe and stays healthy.
✿Claire✿ wrote: "Good morning everyone. Back in the north east, not back at work until Wednesday and trying not to think about what it's going to be like! Got myself sorted with a bit of a system for my uniform for..."Look after yourself Claire.
Well, that was an interesting day. As we couldn't have a meal with neighbours family, we met in a car park, swapped things and talked from a distance! I went just to get out of the house, we did nip into the services as my neighbour wanted a cream cake, but none to be had. They clearly hadn't closed the local lake, it was really busy, a friend said she had seen on facebook that after today, they were going to close all the car parks in an attempt to stop people going. Kind of got all the housework done, going to have a bath shortly, can't think why, but I feel rather tired. Take care Claire.
Good morning. Still reading/editing and lots of gardening. I'd be feeling a bit banged up if the weather were keeping me in but it's actually rather pleasant. Haven't attempted to go anywhere and don't expect to.
Take care, everyone.
Well, they are sending my mum home today, trying to get as many out as possible to free up beds, which I'm not happy about, as they said on Fri they didn't know what would happen when they stop the ab's, and surely she's not had long enough on them. Not enjoying working from home either, although we are having a daily team video chat to help, and one of my colleagues was feeling a bit isolated (she was sent home last week as she had been to Spain), so she rang just to see a familiar face. I did put my shoes on and walked to the end of the street while waiting for my lunch to cook, just to get some fresh air. While I appreciate the reasons for so many food places shutting today, I do worry for the people who have to carry on working. Mind you, seeing the queue out of the chippy at the local lake yesterday, they had to do something.
Making the most of the weather - my Other Half has rotavated some of the veg patch and planted the early spuds. I've tackled the conservatory - actually can sit in it now! This afternoon I'll be potting up some bulbs for my daughter's garden. All a constructive use of our time.

cutting up wood for next winter, blown down branches that had to be moved before silaging :-)
I'm trying to eke out what work I do have, to see if it can last another couple of days. Then it's enforced home schooling of the teenager and gardening.Interestingly, it seems that 3 hours of concentrated home schooling is more efficient than a full day in class
I have a lot to do in the garden and two audiobooks to upload ... gulp. Also need to finish proofing the others.Cheers
MTM
Will wrote: "Interestingly, it seems that 3 hours of concentrated home schooling is more efficient than a full day in class..."That is how I, though ill, managed to homeschool three kids pre-K to ready for university - it is MUCH more efficient.
Schools necessarily waste a lot of time. And getting ready and getting there takes up a lot more.
I could do the hours of teaching/being a reference while they did their work; I could not cope with the continuous and irrational and erratic requirements of the 'system,' when they had to be in school for a year.
Morning. "May you live in interesting times", never thought it would apply to us...Husband got his "you're feeble, don't go out" text from the government this morning. Which is fine, as he wasn't going out anyway. Just wondering how they got his number though!
Stay safe all. Try and find some joy in the small things, till we're through this
apparently they get it through your doctorMind you in our case neither our doctor nor the government would have our mobile phone numbers. It doesn't matter for us but I wonder how it will work for those they do need to contact
The NHS is more likely to hold phone and other contact details for people who have had more contact with the NHS. So while it's not entirely foolproof, there is a reasonable chance that they have contact details for the vulnerable people they need to contact right now.The NHS knows my contact details (including mobile phone numbers) through the many forms that I had to fill in when I had my heart attack(s). If this had happened ten years ago they probably wouldn't have those details about me.
If they don't have phone numbers for folk then I expect they will follow up with written letters.

I'm so proud of my profession.
Its truly amazing how we are handling this, ensuring the safety and well being of 'our' kids amid such uncertainty.
