If you put it in perspective, about 38,000 people die of starvation every day and nobody bats an eyelid. In the face of that, or the 11 million people world wide who die of sepsis annually (another disease we don't worry about) the whole corona thing starts to look a bit faux. It will be alright. As my Dad always used to say,

'All will be well, and all things shall be well.'

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Julian of Norwich! :)

The hen house has just been taken to the farm we can see from our bedroom window. The farmer's children are excited because they have pet Pekins who will now have a house of their own - instead of having to muck in with the rescue hens.

Windy as a bean stew here!

Yep, I think so.

That's great, so you can even see it in use! Also windy as a bean stew here or possibly windier, you know, roast onions kind of levels, but it's a lovely sunny day.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments My problem was the flashings on the chimney, he could see daylight in my loft! He used some insulation to plug the hole, and found some carpet up there which he has put under the hole, so if the hole comes unplugged, it has something to soak into. Will get someone to fix the actual roof when the weather calms down, don't want to assume the fix will last and then discover another leak. Randomly he says there is loads of timber and plywood up there, but it is very draughty, wouldn't like to use it as a room.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! It's like The Day of the Triffids in here!

Just about to go out into the garden and crack on while the sun's out.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Random morning weather wise, looked out of the door and the car was frosty, then when I went to leave there was snow on the car! Started snowing just as I got to work, but was really heavy when walking across the car park. Has tried a bit since, but nothing like this morning. Picking the hire car up after work, I’m not good with new cars, so can’t say I’m looking forward to it, and they couldn’t say how long mine would take.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Shizz, I spent the whole chuffing morning putting a new screen on McMini's iphone. It worked, woot! and then arse wipe here goes and puts the bastard sim card thing in upside down. It stuck fast and the only way to remove it was to take the whole bloody thing apart again. So I did, and as I did so, the thing that unplugs the things from the circuit skited off and severed the cable from the battery to the motherboard.

Knobing knobing knob! Have sent off for a new battery which should arrive on Thursday or Friday. McMini will not be chuffed.

So ... a partial success,

MTM

That's true
Nice enough here, but there have been a few short sharp hail showers, which were very localised

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments We've had another day of pretty brisk winds.

I haven't been out of the apartment in a week - no need to expose other people to the flu. Seem to be over the worst.

News report of the NEXT flu aren't good, and confidence isn't high in the people supposed to be in charge.

You could pray, those of you who do.

Jim | 21811 comments I think that we're just slowing things down, but for good reason. Viruses do badly in the open with high UV light levels. Even in the UK, April is as high as September, and May as high as August. It's pretty much the same the world over.
In Los Angeles there is the same pattern but a lot higher index, so they hit index 6 in March, which we won't hit until June and July before it tails off.

If it drops into a flu-like pattern we'll be in a flu like situation where every year we'll get an outbreak and those with compromised immune systems will be offered a vaccine

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Well, car has been delayed, will hopefully be getting it tonight instead. Spoke to a roofer last night who is working 10 mins away the back end of the week, so will look at mine then - he does a lot of work for us, so at least I know he is trustworthy and reasonable. No proper snow, but drizzly all morning.

Glad you are over the worst Alicia, and I think we are all praying things won't be that bad. Oh dear MT!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Garage rang just before I was finishing work yesterday, they could only find an Insignia, which I refused as I drive a Micra, and there is limited parking space on my street. They have now offered a Skoda Fabia, but it won’t be ready till tomorrow, which means I might not get mine back before having to take my neighbour to the hospital next week, so we are now doing it next Thu after I’ve taken her, which I’m much happier about. One to one this morning, went quite well actually, got a bit of clarity about things.

Hope you stay safe Patti. Good on you Will!

You're jolly lucky to get a chance to see, let alone deck, your GP, Will. At the moment we're being told to ring at 8 for an appointment that day. Naturally, by the time you get through, they're all gone. I wanted a non-urgent appointment - didn't mind if it was a couple of weeks. When I'd tried for days to get through, and after being told I could book online, I gracefully and politely lost my rag. Only the blood clinic could be booked online. Eventually the receptionist offered me an appointment at a local health centre next week. I've never heard the like!

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Flu seems to want to stay around. No fever, but the cough makes other people think you have the plague.

I see no instructions for caring for yourself - other than the same thing for when you get a cold: fluids, rest, cough syrup, avoid going out, wash your hands, don't touch your face - and call if it gets worse.

Not particularly feeling reassured; have enough cough products to take the edge off. I use them as little as possible so they don't lose their effectiveness.

Stay well! Finding that touching my face is a truly horrid habit. That's my goal - for the rest of my life. Is it still New Year's for resolutions?

Hope it goes easy on you guys - and maybe your health authorities are allowed to do their jobs.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Haha Will that made me laugh :D

Just been out shopping. Clearly round here we're all made of sterner stuff than the "clear the shelves" style prepping that seems to be going on elsewhere. I could have had my pick of types of hand sanitisers. Perhaps we just wash our hands better normally - what were all these people doing before?!

Have just had a pineapple flavoured Jaffa Cake with my coffee. Truly we are in the End Time.

Kath, we went through a couple of years like that with our surgery. Now you can book an appointment (wait time a couple of weeks) or book a telephone consultation with the GP who calls back during the morning and then decides if you need to come in that day or not. That seems to work quite well.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Wow, no rain yesterday or so far today! Although it was cold enough everything was frosty. Had someone last night offering a new energy deal, me and my neighbour both took him up on it, as we are both with companies as the ones we wanted were taken over, and this one (Octopus) say they use 100% renewable energy. Hopefully the estimate I was given last night was correct (not sure how accurate the info I had was) as it will save £27 a month.

Do hope the cough isn’t anything serious Alicia, might be worth checking whether you need antibiotics with having it for a bit. That sounds a good system Will, I like the fact mine still do open surgery in the morning, except the times I sit there for 2 hours.

Good luck with the new energy company, Desley.

We're at the niggling cough remaining stage, not the antibiotics stage, but I will definitely keep that in mind. I want to be in as good a shape as possible when the next flu hits, as they think it might be spreading.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Yes we've had three days on the trot of clear blues skies and stillness. Today looks to be the same. Very very welcome. Robin certainly thinks so, he's singing his wee beak off out there :)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Cool here, but lovely and sunny. Once the frost has gone from under the hedges, I think we'll be back out there in the garden. It's the time of year to get on top of it, or you're fire-fighting for the whole of the growing season.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments No rain again, bitterly cold though, was -1 when I got in the car at 8.40, had to scrape it. Would rather that than rain or snow though. Treated myself to Subway for lunch, a rarity. Need to nip to Lidl after work for my neighbour. Had a phone call from Octopus yesterday confirming the bloke had gone through everything, had a bit of moment when we got to the vulnerable customer section, I had said no in the house, but last night she said it included chronic illness as well, so I asked if my form of arthritis counted and it does, not sure I want to be classed as vulnerable when I’m still in my 30’s!

Glad it seems just a niggly cough Alicia, but do be careful.

It's a tricky one, I know a couple of people who don't want to be 'labelled' and I think they're wise in this

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments I don't think i want to be labelled, although i might appreciate getting energy issues dealt with quicker

Jim | 21811 comments Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "I don't think i want to be labelled, although i might appreciate getting energy issues dealt with quicker"

I think the fear is, if labelled, you'd end up not being seen at all as 'it's normal for them'

message 13086: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments That's a huge part of the problem: disabled and ill and different people are so stigmatized by the prevailing attitudes that people who can, fight to not be seen as one of them.

Instead of loos and ramps being built convenient for everyone, they LOCK the disabled ones - making it incredibly difficult for those who need them urgently.

We have a long way to go to make the world kinder to everyone - and no people the scapegoats to blame.

I'm guilty of the same: without my Airwheel, I'm fighting the very idea of getting a scooter or wheelchair - because then I'll look more disabled that I absolutely have to (while complaining because it costs me all the energy I have to use the walker until I get my cool steed back. I've taken on the world's attitudes that I'm worth less if I'm not mobile. Not good.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Rubbish night sleep, glad I've got the dentist though as the jaw on my left side started hurting on the way back from Subway yesterday (before I ate!). Going to the tip and food shopping on the way back from the dentist, not sure if my neighbour wants to do anything. We have rain today though, typical it comes back for the weekend.

I agree Jim, it's hard enough to be taken seriously with a chronic illness, docs are so quick to dismiss things as being related. And people's attitudes, but both able and disabled bodied people. We don't want to look weak, but we can make ourselves worse by doing that.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Just finished a gargantuan blog post and have started writing the hello protocol for the audiobooks mailing list. They may not be out until September but I want to be ready! Also need to get a few bits of input from Gareth so feel it’s wise to ask the questions I need answered in good time.

Desley, octopus are one of McOther’s clients so they’re probably reasonably decent, as these things go.

Go Kath with the garden, just off out to finish pruning the apple trees now. It’s a bit late but there are only a few spikes I need to get rid of with the long handled loppers.

Morning all ...

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Turned out to be a bit of a pointless dentist visit, she explained a couple of options, then said I'd need to book in for the root canal treatment, but she works part time, so can't get that done till 21st April! Apparently the other side is just a bit of a stretched ligament, nothing to worry about. Was very pleased with myself, got back and decided to take some books to the charity shop and didn't come back with any, although I have bought some kindle books. Very windy here, and supposed to rain again.

Heard an assistant tell a woman in Boots that she would have to be outside the door when the shop opens as all redeliveries of handgel go within 5 mins of shop opening!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12598 comments Rain again, and another yellow weather warning. Must have been quite heavy overnight, the part of the road that is the beginning of the flood area had a rather large puddle when I drove past it this morning.

It does seem mad what people are panic buying, I have to say I did contemplate getting some UHT milk just in case people went mad and I couldn’t get any milk. Carbolic soap is probably better than some of the things you buy these days Jim, you could probably sell it a bit more than that – Aldi’s 69p handgels are going on eBay for £15! Lovely looking cat – curiously, well fed cats are better hunters, glad he is helping with the vermin though.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I just hope we don't end up with some extra venemous form of noro next. Imagine the panic buying round that! This is flu, it's killed less people than flu this year, although I do understand that if it spreads, in the over fifties bracket at any rate, it may kill more ... but still less than sepsis, pneumonia and others. It's still less deadly than bird flu and we never got into this sort of a hissy over that. It's like they're practising. Also, turns out this Witty bloke is my house mistresses son!

I am still trying to get my head round why it is such a big deal. I can't.
