Morning all. We're battening down the hatches, in for a stormy one today. The A1 is going to be closed nearby - I can't remember that being announced before the wind has arrived before (usually they wait until a couple of lorries have blown over before shutting it). And we'll find out any weak spots on the roof. Those that haven't already blown off :/

hope you had a good break over here
I did that too, Will. And good morning! It's grey here and the wind has died down but despite forecasts of mildness I don't detect any.
Been writing short stories and painting rocks. Finished the stories and almost run out of rocks to paint - so I'll probably spend the day being a blessed nuisance!
Think today was slightly harder than yesterday, even though I slept through, it wasn’t easy to get up, still no proper daylight either. Took the decorations down last night, one of my colleagues gave me some of his cats old stuff (didn’t bother to tell him I don’t volunteer any more), I’m going to use the old scratch post as it has a bed on it, and give the other two to the charity. Thanks for the link R, I’ll have a nosey. Hope the weather doesn't get too bad for you. Did wonder when you were going back Patti, hope this year is better for you. No wonder you didn’t get much sleep MT, glad things are going well with the audio stuff.
Will wrote: "It's mild here: but blowing hard and drizzling nastily. Glad I'm in a warm room at the desk today."the rain stopped long enough for me to walk to Leece to pay a bill and get some bits and pieces :-)
Thanks for the votes! :DStill windy... Went out for a walk and it was much milder than I was expecting. Nothing has come off the roof yet!
Morning all. Goodreads was down for quite a while this morning, it's been a while since I saw 'The Gil in the Chair'. I haven't done my usual sweep of our threads so if you see anything out of order please let me know :)
Blimey, drove home last night and my car told me it was 11! It was very windy but that seems to have stopped today. We actually have blue skies today, which is nice. Woke up early, was going to go back to sleep, but then Lucy started cleaning herself very loudly, so ended up getting up, at least it means I can finish early. Got a letter through about my nerve conduction test, luckily they let you ring to make an appointment, its one of the hospitals I haven’t been to!
It's actually quite pleasant here, although I haven't ventured out yet. I leave that for daylight, which is arriving in a grey and disjointed fashion
Started windy and grey but now it's clearing. Voted for Ro's art work and now I'm just finishing uploading the first two audiobooks to Findaway. Haven't done them on ACX yet. Unfortunately, the voice artist is ill so I suspect we may fail to get them done by the end of this month, which is what we were aiming for. Although he's still optimistic! :-) Bless him.McMini got hit in the face with a hockey stick yesterday - first time playing. He looks a bit cro magnum but seems OK. More hockey today and I'll have to run up there in the car and drop off his golf bats for after school golf because his father took the wrong ones!
Then McOther is away for two nights and we have a dig planned for Saturday before he gets back and I have one on Sunday. Looking forward those but will miss McOther.
Good luck with the new term Patti.
Morning all!

Complete contrast again today, wet and dull, not had daylight again. Was pleased with an e-mail from Pets at Home, saying they are donating £100k to WWF to help out in Australia. Reading an interesting short story by Arthur Conan Doyle, not 100% sure when it was set, only found two dates, latest was 1884, but it’s about a woman who buys a house in a village and tries setting up an Emancipation Group, and is persuading the men that women can do the same jobs as them, what a shame it’s still relevant today. At least there have been some improvements, this was written before women were allowed to vote, which she also pointed out.
Desley, it's wet, dull, and dark here too. I'm not enthused to be going outside to have a go at the fencing that needs a bit of work. It might wait until tomorrow.
Weird. It absolutely threw it down when I picked up McMini last night but this morning it's blue skies and sun. So much daylight that, for the first time this year, I was able to do the return from the school run with no headlights! Hoorah!Today it's the BSE Authors' meet up. Looking forward to it.
Cheers

Will do a proper post later, ended up having a hectic morning as I misjudged how long my new report would take, and have had to work part through my lunch! Did see a squirrel on our lane this morning and then 4 deer in one field while talking to a colleague and 3 highland cows in a different field, one of the reasons I love where I work.

I don't remember our first winter in California being this cold this long, but am thrilled that the precipitation - and the snow mass in the mountains which feeds our rivers - is above normal. After a seven-year drought, it is good to know.Wish we could all send some of our excess water to Australia.
Phew, glad first week is over! Bit of housework and couple of errands this morning, then going to the cinema with a friend to watch Cats and then tea at Nando's. Glad the drought is over Alicia, like you say, shame we can't send some to Australia
Had a lovely morning metal detecting. Haven’t been for ages as I only got to go about twice last year. McMini came and this time, he loved it so that was brilliant. I have another dig on my own tomorrow. Probably will only do a half day though. Had a bit of a thing last night, woke up with one leg in agony, shooting pains in my thigh, back of knee and left bum lump. It was so painful I wondered about calling 111 but they’d just say go to hospital because they always do and I was on my own so I wasn’t getting McMini dressed in the middle of the night, telling him I might be ill, and heading off to wait four hours in casualty to be told to go home and take some paracetamol.
After concentrating for some time, I began to see similarities between the pain and restless leg. Like restless leg gone mad, or on steroids. I get the normal version a bit because the muscles up the back of my legs are all too tight and I limp, of course, and I can’t walk up hills anymore unless I walk like Herr Flick out of Allo Allo. As I couldn’t get comfortable after half an hour, I thought I’d try some Alexander technique. Got a book and lay on my back on the floor with my head resting on the book. A lady at my old gym had told me this resets your spine. Woot. And I can confirm it does. But it takes every bit of the forty minutes she said it takes ... ah. So I dozed on the floor of my bedroom with a dressing gown over me from half past two until half past three. Dozed because no-one could sleep through the snoring I was doing. Then the pain had gone away enough to sleep. But it was hard work getting up to go digging this morning, I can tell you.
I’ve now researched some yoga exercises which I did today and they’ve helped massively. It’s still there, pecking at me, waiting to pop up again but if I make sure I don’t stay in the same position too long I’m OK. But yeh, a day digging tomorrow would probably be foolish. Anyway, morning all!
Cheers

Sorry you had to deal with that - but I understand the impulse not to go sit in a waiting room for hours while more serious cases get dealt with first. For my pain I have to remember to do both strengthening AND stretching exercises. With just the stretching, the problems recur - because I haven't done anything to get rid of the cause. The problem is that the strengthening exercises always have pain as their aftereffect; it's only after doing them regularly that they help.
No fun falling apart.
Morning. Up bright and early to cover the phones for the local blood bikes service. I drive for them as well (car, not bike!) but I'm doing the coordinating this morning. Hopefully get a chance to power through some essay as well. Thought it would all be over for a bit after I qualified... how silly was I! Straight onto another course we went! At least this will be it for a little while. Need some breakfast at some point but I currently have a Jessicat on my lap who is somewhere between snoring and purring.Had a great, if rather blowy, day out yesterday, definitely cleared out some cobwebs. Did a couple of beaches between Alnmouth and Blyth, was good to be out in the sunshine.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend and not getting blown about too much.
Still almost dark here!Bit wet and not much promise for a better day
I've sort of promised myself I'll clear the last of the brambles off the law, where I heaped them after clearing the wall and hedge of ivy and rubbish
I hate brambles, nasty vicious buggers they are!Morning all. Brightening today with the prospect of some sun after a positively frightful deluge yesterday combined with 60-70mph gusts that had the A1 closed again.

Somebody once described brambles as 'a thug of a plant' which sums them up nicely
urgh, Lucy had me up at 5, took until after 8 when I got back to sleep, didn't want to get up. Cinema was OK, tea was nice, friend is trying to plan more stuff this year as we didn't do much last year. It was dry when we went into the cinema, but bouncing down when we left and it hasn't stopped yet, luckily she had seen the weather forecast and had a brolly, but we were still rather wet, especially as we had to go and put another ticket on the car. Some housework, cooking some food to take for lunches (even though I still have to eat cheese and crackers!) and a bath, see if I can finish a book this year.Sorry to hear that MT, not sure going metal detecting today would be wise. Hope you can find some exercises that work. Hope you get everything done Claire.

No. And yeh, I hear you re stretching and strengthening. That's why the yoga exercises seem to be quite good. 7 days, ten minutes a day and there are strengthening and stretching exercises all in which seems sensible.

But ... blackberries! :-)
Blackberries now come in a nice cardboard punnet from the wee fruit & veg shop :)And to be fair brambles do provide excellent cover for birds and small mammals. In the right place

A neighbouring house had domesticated blackberries which had gone wild. When the house was empty waiting for new owners, we had to eat them, it would have been a shame to let them go to waste
You could eat them raw with cream and sugar like Raspberries :-)
If I was to tell you how much I hate brambles, this post would be 3 pages long.I'm at the desk at 8 am with a (nearly) full moon in the sky and waiting for the 75 mph winds forecast for us this afternoon. Don't think I'll go out.
Saturday K and I went out to a spoken word event, drove home is horrid conditions. A friend at the event came home 20 minutes later and drove into a fallen tree on the same road. We must have been lucky.
Emerged from my winter hibernation (Not really hibernation, in fact actually the chaos of moving house and then Christmas, which is about as far removed from hibernation as you can get!) and emerging into a brave new world full of architects and extension planning. This is all far too grown up for me! Hope anyone getting the brunt of Storm Brendan in the next 48 hours or so, doesn't suffer too much damage or disruption.
Morning! Calm and sunny here - that won't last. Off out later for the ineffable delight that is the annual blood pressure check! I shall make the opportunity to buy more paints while I'm out.
Went digging at the weekend and found a silver Saxon thing. It's only a partifact but it's still only my second Saxon. Woot. Also took McMini and he loved it and said he would be happy to do it again. Hideous troubles with ACX this weekend trying to upload an audiobook. Jeepers. It kept saying 'there is a problem with your audio files' what it actually meant was, 'when you put all the sales data in we didn't save it and now we've greyed out the page so you can't go back and fix it'. I got round it by clicking that I was uploading new files on all of them, then it let me go back and alter the metadata, and then it remembered I'd uploaded the files and asked if I wanted to submit the book. I checked the sound files were all correct and in the right order and when they were, submitted it.
We had a sunny start but it's clouding over now. I have bought an ultra sound machine to help deal with the arthritic knees so just off to collect that from Boots now before it begins to rain.
Morning all
Less wet and windy today, although only briefly had blue sky. Got the handyman coming after work today, and do need to nip and get some milk. Yes, you couldn’t waste blackberries Jim. Glad you got home safely on Sat Will, don’t blame you for not wanting to go out today. Congrats on the house move Ben. Glad that McMini enjoys digging MT, hopefully that will mean you can go more.
we had the electric off briefly, But you're right Desley, you cannot waste blackberries that good :-)
Morning!!I am currently writing my personal statement for my UCAS application. I'M APPLYING FOR NURSING!! I'm so excited but also panicking because it is due in tomorrow by 6pm.
I can do this.
I hope everyone is well, I haven't read through the last 150 posts because I really need to get this done so I can get others to read over it before sending it off.
EEEEEP!!!
Oh, good for you, Jud! I hope your application's successful.Just been for a physio appointment. Been signed off. I'm on my own now!
Handyman came, he fixed the kitchen cupboard, although I am a bit concerned I will need a new cupboard soon. Need new door handles for two, and he thinks mine is best being re-hung and the hinges put in a more normal place – didn’t dawn on me till I went to bed that the doors had been originally hung there, and maybe they got moved because the wood there was too bad, it has been painted over since. Was too wet and windy after he went to go to the shop for milk, hoping neighbour will want to go to cheap shop tonight. Not had daylight today, but despite being gloomy, it is better than yesterday. Had a rude awakening this morning, I was dreaming and heard an odd noise, to realise it was one of the alexa’s going off, when I realised it wasn’t mine, I decided the best option was to use my phone to switch it off, good job as it was the girl’s, I’d have gone downstairs. Odd thing is I don’t have alarms set for 6.45, so not sure what happened, but decided to get up. Finally made my app for the nerve conduction test, did get offered tomorrow pm but thought that was a tad too short notice, so they’ve offered me a Sat app, which is the day before my MRI, so I might book the Mon off work. Glad you both have power again. Ooh, fingers crossed Jud, of course you can do it. Glad physio has signed you off Kath.

Cool Roe! Well done! I'll go and browse that now.
Everyone, spent the day doing thank you letters and sending the aged aunts, uncles and godparents calendars with a newsy letter trying to make my shit year sound upbeat! Felt like a waste of fucking time but I think they'll actually enjoy the letters and be dead chuffed with the calendars. Just have to post them tomorrow and then Christmas is officially done! Woot!
Totally knackered because Gareth sent some voice recordings over last night, so I listened to them, send the feedback and then was so excited about the audio for book two that I was unable to go to sleep until about half past one in the morning. Yes I am a knob. But you all knew that! Mwahahahaharhgh!
Here's to a fabulous 2020 everyone.
Cheers
