Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Struggled to get to sleep last night so didn’t want to get up today, supplements should be here today fortunately. Was doing a bit of reading last night, it can cause light sensitivity which could explain why I’m still having issues that the ophthalmologist and optician can’t explain. Picked up new glasses, still not convinced they are dark enough, and will have to be careful driving in them, but he said they are for general use so no problem if I keep them on when not using the computer. I’m going to ring the doc after work and see if I can get my blood test results for the ones in Nov and see if there is a reduction. Very intermittent weather here!

Sorry your half marathon wasn’t very enjoyable Jud, I wish I could sleep that well too! Hope it goes as well as these things can Will, that is a sobering thought.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Afternoon all. I have been to so many funerals this year, it’s been a bit sombre.

Out of interest, I just tried the British citizenship test.
I failed
😁

I got 19 out of 24
Don't know what the pass mark is

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments 18, apparently. So you’re authentically British

message 11755: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments They should make everyone take it, every year, and pass it to register to vote.

When your mind starts to fail, and you can't pass the test any more, you are relieved of the responsibility of voting.

That would work on so many levels.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Clearly my mind has already failed then?!

then they ought to make damned sure the questions are sensible

How does knowing how many member states the commonwealth has make you British? It's not as if the number doesn't change

Then we get "How many AMs does the Welsh government have?"
Assuming you know what an AM is (why not just say Assembly member) do they mean the number of members in the assembly or the number who support the Welsh government

Then it asks "What yearly event happens between Oxford and Cambridge Universities?"
Offering you rowing, soccer, tennis and basketball
There is an annual rowing race, but actually he Varsity Football Match between the University football clubs of Cambridge and Oxford is one of the oldest ongoing fixtures in world football.
(There's also an annual varsity tennis match as well)

Then you get "How many colonies were granted independence in 1947?" Frankly I haven't a clue, I certainly wasn't taught that at school (apparently 9)

As for "What tools did the Bronze age people introduce?" two of the choices are actually correct, They did introduce ornaments and weapons (but not the concepts, only new ones in Bronze) but also they did introduce new farming techniques (whether that is good enough to count as farming machinery I don't know)

So if the Manchester evening news citizen test is genuine, and it cost me my vote, I'd sue.

But isn't this the test you have to pass to become a citizen?

Okay: start a list of what every new British citizen needs to know:

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I haven’t tried that test yet. Will go and have a look to see if I’m persona non grata. 😀
Well I’m ok on one site with a few lucky guesses but if I took another sample - I’ll get me coat! What a lot of stupid questions. There’s not a tick box for “Whatever ‘.
I’ve got a small disciple for Patty. I made the builders some bacon rolls yesterday and little grandson who has an aversion to trying new foods actually asked for some bacon. He had 2 rashers with his lunch, demanded seconds which I gave him. Demanded another 2 rashers but I refused I said we’d eaten it all.
This morning on getting to his house he wanted me to go to Lidl and get bacon. No hello Grams, no good morning, just “I want bacon” If he says please he may be lucky.

message 11761: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments How do?
Bacon. Lovely. Only have it once a week though.
It's warmer today. I put a fleece on to walk to the little shop in the village and I had a fug on when I got back. Nice to have the warmth back. Might read in the garden this afternoon if it continues.

The problem is that being a British Citizen isn't like that.
There isn't actually a lot you need to know. A bit about parliament and your MP perhaps
It would be useful to have something about how your local authority works and interacts with other levels of government but actually that differs so much depending on where in England you live, never mind the rest of the UK
But for somebody coming here the most important thing is actually to be able to speak, read and write good English.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Ended up leaving late last night, was just about to switch the computer off when the cleaner came to find me, the sink was leaking! I decided the best option was ringing our maintenance man, rather than try and fix it. Didn’t want to get up again this morning, but pain levels meant it was the best option. Can’t wait to be able to take some meds tomorrow. Randomly my shoulder is less painful, but I keep waking up with pins and needles. Interesting chat with the receptionist, I can understand why the doc wasn’t concerned by my B12 levels – last Nov, they were 154 (bottom end of the scale is 150), yet I was told they were normal, this time they are 250, so she probably assumed I’d been told about it last year and that is why they had improved. The ones that were flagged as being high were also normal in Nov, they have doubled. Odd that I am now getting symptoms when they have improved.

Looking at some of those, I’d fail the citizenship test. Not sure what relevance they have though. Sounds a good plan though Alicia. That's funny Lynne!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all. Sunny again :)

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments The rain ‘shower’ this morning was brutal. Glad it stopped before I had to go out. I planned to take little’un to an adventure park of some sort but we need a fine day as it’s not cheap and rain would spoil it, perhaps tomorrow or Friday will be settled.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

Got given some proper work to do yesterday and not sure that I did it correctly, it was quite confusing and I don't understand what it all relates to so that made it harder to understand.

I think I'd fail the citizenship test too.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments G'day. Done my bit of writing for the day, Now off to read. Oh, might make some lunch on the way!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments What a morning, was in the middle of washing my hair in the shower when the smoke alarm went off! In my panic, I forgot I had two, and went to the downstairs one, only to be confused by no light! The upstairs one is really tricky to switch off. Couldn’t see any reason why it set off, didn’t even seem that much steam. I did decide at the weekend that it’s time for a new bathroom suite, maybe this is a sign to do it sooner rather than later! Was told to be at the hospital at 8.35, so got there at 8.25, didn’t get called through till 8.50, but according to their computer, that was my timeslot! It was a mobile one in the car park that was private, I didn’t have to get undressed! Was very painful, I nearly couldn’t finish it, had to really grit my teeth. Not sure when I’ll get the results, I haven’t had my follow up app through yet. Had a bonus when I went to the chemist yesterday though, I’d only asked for the allergy drops on prescription, but when I picked it up, he’d given me a big bottle of the allergy drops, but he’d also given me two bottles of the decent dry eye drops.

Hope you did do the work properly Jud! Hope the weather improves for you Lynne

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments I don't know when the roofers will be done, but it's been three weeks since they started, the complex is huge, and it's all done by manual labourers (who I'm hoping won't fall off the roof!).

I have the best set in the world to watch them from, but it's getting boring to listen to them all day every day, and hard to write with the noise.

Paradise needs its roof repaired.

Gotta say its nice having the waste of space head gone. we're finally getting some proper systems in place.

Good luck to child number 1, Darren

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Manky weather here too - Humid but cold. Small boy still ecstatic about ‘his’ discovery of bacon. “I’m so happy I can have bacon with my toast” says he. He ‘ might’ try a spoonful of ice cream after lunch. I’ve never known a kiddie refuse to even try ice cream. Never mind, more for us if he doesn’t like it. Hope it’s fine tomorrow. It’s been a long week and a day out will do us both good.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Well, woke up to the sound of rain, and has been a very grey day since. Had my last steroid drop last night, am hoping my neighbour is wrong and I don’t have a rebound this time. Check up is on 18th Sept, was supposed to be 3 weeks after finishing, but just realised it is 4 weeks. Any sign before hand and I’ll be on the phone, rather than wait for it. Going to keep on with the allergy drops for the foreseeable though. Got up early today, so didn’t risk having a shower! I did get home and found a new bubble in the lino, hopefully it’s nothing, but I will be ringing a builder tonight to get a quote for a new bathroom suite, it must be 20 years old (although the lino isn’t that old). Interestingly, after my MRI being painful, my knee has been much better, I can walk up and down stairs like a normal person now. Bad foot has been burning a lot though. To do list is so long I can’t figure out where to start! Had forgotten it is a bank hol till a colleague reminded me, and they were tickled when my first reaction to having a nice weekend was how much washing I could get through.

Hope you get to grips with Excel Jud. Hope the workers finish soon Alicia so you can concentrate again. Hope the new systems help a lot Patti. Congrats to child 1 Darren. Hope little boy is brave enough to try ice cream Lynne! Bless him for being excited about bacon!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments The ice cream was yuk! Peppa pig has a lot to answer for. Never mind. I shan’t have to wipe him clean tomorrow as he won’t be getting sticky. The dog enjoyed his leavings.
Well done Darren’s lad, is he really the age for 6th form. Time surely flies.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning each, and well done to Darren's lad. Stressful time for them but I'm glad he's got his grades.

Sunny here - how odd. Not used to it. Just popping round to our village farm shop for a couple of roasting joints for our freezer and some steaks - requested by our lad. We're meeting them tomorrow for a little lunch party and he thought he'd ask if I could take them some. They sell much further afield than the village!

Catch you later x

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Spoke to a builder last night, he is busy for the rest of the year, but has agreed to come and look next week to see if my concerns are just cosmetic and it can wait, if not, I’ll have to find someone else. After speaking to him, I noticed a little round indentation in the floor, looks like there might be a hole in one of the floorboards, but it’s not overly large and I struggled to find it again at bed time, so might have been there a while. It is dry, but overcast today.

Hope there isn't TOO much washing for you to do, Desley - enjoy the free day.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Taking advantage to do at least 4 wash loads, itwas so nice when I got home that I ignored the housework and read my book for a bit, before nipping to Lidl for 2 things that turned into a lot more!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments It was a lovely day here, very warm but still rather windy. Today's excitement was the Coastguard arriving with blues and twos to help a canoeist in difficulty. All well in the end.
Well done to Darren's offspring. Thought we were finished with exams in this house but younger daughter will be doing accountancy exams in her new graduate job.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments We had a lovely day at the adventure park & zoo. I had to fill in his name and contact number on his wristband in case I mislaid him. The temptation to put “anyone but me “ on the contact info was really strong. He’d done the “Are we there yet” the whole journey and he’s in ‘Why’ mode this week.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Woke up early in pain again, managed to nod off for a bit after a drink and a painkiller, but then Lucy wanted breakfast at 7.40. As it is a lovely day, I'm not too bothered. Got a hairdresser app at 12, then got to take my neighbour to the hospital at 2.15, she's having an endoscopy under sedation so am leaving her there and picking her up after. Do have quite a bit to do with having done little housework last week.

Bet that was tempting Lynne! Glad you had a good day though.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments The icing on the cake, Jim!
We met the lad and family in Pickering where the young un (who now likes to be called Thomas) was awestruck by the arrival of a steam engine. All that enthusiasm.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments The enthusiasm of the young is magical and something to be treasured. And indeed something everyone should strive for at any age!

It's been a wonderful day here today. Sunny, warm and practically windless, which makes a difference from our permagale. Town was busy with day trippers and the coastal skiff regatta - they will have been delighted with the conditions. Much easier to row on flat calm!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Phew, what a day! Neighbour was asked to get there early, so dashed home from the hairdresser and set off before putting my second wash load out. She asked me to get her some stuff from Lidl and Aldi on the way home, but we were asked to pick her up at 4.15, by the time we finished it was 3.35, so no point driving home. Unfortunately, she didn't actually get out till 4.47, by which point we had been there nearly an hour, and you only get an hour in the disabled parking bay. Luckily I have an insulated bag in the car, so the fresh and frozen stuff was OK. Had to quickly unpack, peg the washing out and put my eye drops in, then neighbour realised she'd forgotten something for tea, so I had to go to Sainsbury's as well! More annoyingly, I didn't get to finish my book, 2 mins left. Got a message off 'ratty' neighbour asking if I can feed/medicate her rats tomorrow night and Mon, am being really mean and saying no, think running round after one neighbour is enough for a weekend.

Couldn't even call it haar it's so thick. I hope it lifts, there's a lovely day probably only a couple of miles inland!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Woke up early again in pain, Lucy tried waking me up at 7.20, I told her to give me 2 minutes and the next thing I knew it was 8.40! Still feel a bit tired, but miles better than last weekend after one hectic day, so hopefully the VitB tabs are working. Knee is killing though. Got to hoover/sweep all the floors, do a bit of washing up and 2 washloads, then plan is to sit outside reading.
