Apparently, it's to do with the full moon of Tauzaungmone. 2 day public holiday in Myanmar. I have no idea what it's about, but I'm going to look it up. It sounds interesting!

Bitterly cold day in the valley today, but just been informed that we have INSET on Friday, so at least it'll be child free, even if I do have to come into work.

Edit: Ooh, it's a festival of lights marking the end of the rainy season from what I can find, and looks like it could be really pretty tonight for you, with candle balloons and stuff.

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Weather is somehow even worse here - the dog was not impressed when we let him in the garden. I don't think he understands hail.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Morning

Got a meeting at 10, going to try and manage without a coffee and get one after to see me through the rest of the day.

Supposed to be running this afternoon too but it is a bit wet, if it doesn't dry up a little I don't think I'll bother going

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! Just had a decent writing session. Now need to go to the post. Two friends have birthdays on Friday!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I'm just back in from planting up pots of miniature daffodils with three year olds in the hail! They have them out in all weathers at that nursery school :D

They wouldn't get out much if they didn't!

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments We’ve had sun first thing so I put daughter’s washing out, got caught in a heavy shower walking back from taking Harry to school, washing got even wetter, then we had a few zaps of lightning and thunderstorm and OH said it snowed on him for a minute or two while he walked the dogs.

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Bitterly cold here. People even had hats on.

Mind you, I am from Scotland originally, so I do like the change in seasons. Crispy cold, crunchy ground, seeing breath in the air, log fires, a wee toddy and . . . a good book. Bliss.

Jim | 21812 comments two friends of mine who are Nigerian but who are now British Citizens, came back from a trip to see family and friends in Nigeria
They got off the plane in the UK and the temperature difference was 20 degrees, so they're feeling the cold at the minute

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Still raining here - I'm not sure it will ever let up.

message 8563: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments It's dry here, but lumme, it's grey. I've had the light on since I got up.
Writing this morning then flower arranging this aft. All go.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I’ve just seen that autocorrect and the pedant in me had to change it. Some of the things mine comes up with must be Freudian as it’s quite offensive at times. I’m very tempted to leave them in.
Lovely crisp sunny day here but not freezing just cold.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Morning, we're back at last from 3 days on the East Coast, near Grimsby.

It was bitterly cold, wet and draining - but a lot of fun watching the seals at Donna Nook (the reason for the visit). 2000 seals on the beach - how do they manage not to pong the place out?

Might manage to post a few photos later.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments And in a different mode, I'm looking to plant up some borders and pots - any tips on winter bedding to add a bit of colour for me?

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Would be hard to beat violas Will. They'll shut up shop during the very worst of the weather but will get going again come early spring. Primulas/primrose are good too but can go on strike if the weather doesn't suit them. Wallflowers put on a show in the spring but no flowers before then (they have a great scent too). Cyclamen look sweet now but will finish early next year so don't last. My money would be on violas (it's what we use in our 100+ planters round the town here) with a few spring flowering bulbs tucked in underneath :)

message 8569: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That's what I have in my tubs too. Such a variety of colours available if you seek them out. Sneak in a few miniature daff bulbs if you can still get them. Plant a bit deeper, of course.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Well, my afternoon off didn’t quite go as planned, I picked the wrong day to go to the podiatry drop in clinic, was waiting 2 hours! Turned out to be worth it though, she asked if anyone had ever mentioned having surgery on my ingrowing toenail, which they haven’t – the reason it is getting worse is that it is being affected by my bunion, so removing part of it would solve the problem, but it is a 2 month recovery, so have to weigh it up. If anyone has either had it done, or knows someone who has, and has any comments, they would be gratefully received. Was also chatting about my injured foot, and she thinks it sounds like tendon/tissue damage and as I’m a slow healer, it could just be taking longer than normal – that would be better than arthritis. Not had the instant relief from it that I had last time. Ended up going to bed early last night, was shattered and didn’t want to get up this morning. Was very cold this morning, the girls only got the window open for an hour. Need to do a bit of tidying tonight ready for the cleaner coming tomorrow. Colleagues have started with the Christmas decorations already, even though they agreed to wait till Dec!

Festival of lights sounds lovely, did you see much Patti? Oh dear, hope your daughter wasn’t too bothered by her washing getting wetter Lynne! I don't like to complain at rain at this time of year, the alternative is snow! Wow, hope you do get chance to post some pics Will.

Sorry to hear about your foot Desley.

I had yesterday off work, i got a day to myself in my wood shop, i made a snowman and a christmas tree on my lathe and started to wooden rings for colleagues. It was a very productive day.

Got today off to spend with Ally and Dexter.

Have a great Friday everybody.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Glad you had a productive day yesterday, have a lovely family day

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments My brother in law has just had his toenails off. He’s diabetic so has to be extra cautious but it does take a couple of months to heal. He can drive though. My big toe nail came off completely after big dog ran me over with a chair. It fell off in May and is almost grown back. I’m afraid you’ve got to be patient with it.
It’s piddling down here cold too.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments It's now actually been raining for more than 24 hours non-stop. That never really happens here :( I've got some advertising boards to hang up on the way into town and I've been putting it off but the exhibition starts tomorrow so I think I'm going to have to do it in the rain
Toenails make me feel a bit odd. Even my own

He wrote for Dr Who back in the 80s as well, as I remember.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I ‘m a bit like that with most bodily parts, once detached. I can’t keep baby teeth or touch relics either.
Nothing wrong with grandson’s feet this morning. His stamping in a paddy would put Michael Flattley to shame. Sheesh he was a little you know what. I’m worn out just watching. I also put the wrong cheese spread on his toast, 🙄🙄TGIF

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Just had a little pootle round the Christmas market and popped in to see a friend who is running a stall. Bought some stuff including two magnetic pads to Velcro to my trousers for my back and a bangle thing - much stronger one than usual - to put round my wrist. The thumbs are already less painful. The back ... well the first thing that happened to the pad was it fell straight down the loo so it’s been washed and disinfected and is drying on the radiator.

Mwahahahaahrgh!

Cheers

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Woke up ridiculously early, and had done the majority of the tidying last night, just had the washing up to do today, so ended up watching a lot of TV. Not much to do tonight as the cleaner was here today, will wander round to the Co-op after work and then just chill, got a busy weekend.

Only you MT!! Thanks Lynne - as long as I can drive I'm not bothered by the healing, the only worry is that as I take longer to heal than normal (even small bruises can last weeks!), that might too. I'm not looking forward to it though, my feet are so ticklish that I actually do struggle to cut my own toenails and hate people touching them, even cats.

Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Morning, been raining here too, but it's dry at the moment. Today's plan is yoga, food shopping, and writing.

MT, eek. Hope the back pad works once it's dried out.

Hope you can get something done to ease the pain, Desley.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Had a couple of bonuses yesterday afternoon - was rummaging through my drawer for something, and found £8.50 in an envelope! Then decided to treat myself to a larger tablet in the Black Friday deals, thought I'd see if there was any refurbished ones, which there were, when I went to checkout, it gave me a discount, so paid £55 for it! Cleaner came yesterday, was lovely coming home to a clean house and getting up this morning and having very little to do. Going into Halifax this afternoon with my neighbour, hoping to get the last 2 Christmas presents. Dry out, seems windy though.

Thanks Kelly, this wont help with the damaged toe, but if it helps with the recurrent ingrowing toenail issue its something.

I should live in the Grumpy corner I’d feel at home there at the moment.

Lynne that sounds grim, Kath, I agree, I still feel delighted that I’m not going back to school on Sunday nights, even if McMini is.

Cheers

It happens I may have something useful re ingrown toenails.

My daughter, a dancer, had severe ones as a teen. We saw a surgeon (primary physician recommended him), and got the same story you did: long recovery, big deal. Much pain. Nail might be permanently lost. Etc.

So I said we'd think about it. Then it occurred to me to take her to see and podiatrist with experience with dancers (because they have a lot of foot problems). I found one whose little girls were dancers, and who had actually, as an intern, travelled with a troupe of dancers to help and learn about their problems.

He did an extremely simple chemical, not surgical, procedure where he killed a tiny fraction of the bottom of the nail root (the part that grew up and out into the ingrown part) with a drop of something. The recovery was a day or two of not dancing, no pain beyond a minor amount from the procedure itself, and that edge of the toenail has never grown back. She had the other foot done a week later.

And I went back and had both mine done! Such a relief.

The podiatrist was quite uncomplimentary about surgeons.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments shattered now - new boots got a proper test today, have done over 12.5k steps! Feel very tired and stiff now. Got the present I wanted though, and also got the girls another present - saw a Yorkshire Cat Rescue charity shop, so decided to pop in to give them some money and they were selling a radiator bed for £3! So not only a bargain, but the money went to a cat rescue who homed nearly 1000 cats last year. :) also managed to treat myself to some half price alcohol - mince pie liquor, bailey's type drink. Was hard finding enough to do for 4 hours though, and I'm not going anywhere near any town centres again this side of Christmas, it was chaotic and people were just so rude. Didn't help that it was the Christmas light switch on, which also included fireworks! At least they have waived car parking charges every Sat until Christmas

That's interesting Alicia - it was a podiatrist who recommended having this done. Might ask if the procedure you mentioned can be done instead, can you remember the name? I am going to have to, it is still sore despite her dealing with it on Wed.

message 8593: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4839 comments Find one who treats dancers, Desley. That's all I remember, that he applied a chemical which killed the root of the nail on a thin sliver of the side - and that part never grew back. Recovery was very short, esp. compared to the surgical procedure. Not in New Jersey anymore, and it's been a number of years. Sorry.

message 8594: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21812 comments After seeing a podiatrist I'd recommend you have a word with one generally Desley
I've lost track of whether you have or not, but if you haven't, insist your doctor puts you through to one
Round here the waiting list is a bit long

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12604 comments Up early again! Got a few bits I need to do today, going to another Christmas fair today, for the rescue Lucy is from, and doing food shopping on the way home. Cold and wet,

It does sound similar, they remove a sliver and put Phenol on to stop it growing back. It would be done by the podiatrist as well. I've been lucky enough to see 3 podiatrists now Jim! The procedure is a farce though, you have to fill in a form, post it to them, then ring 2 weeks later to make an appointment! Think the initial appointment was a month wait

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning, each. Well, what a day yesterday was. Had a phone call from our son at teatime to say he was in hospital. He'd gone to A&E after having stomach pains for a couple of days. They rushed him into surgery and removed his appendix! It's all keyhole now so they're keeping him in another night. I waited about seven months, forgot about it totally, then got a phone call out of the blue asking if I could use a cancellation :-)

Good old appendicitis, sneaks up on us when we're least expecting.
Glad he's OK,
My appendix had burst by the time they opened me up so when the nurse came to take the stitches out she asked whether I'd had an operation or had been in a knife fight :-)

Key hole! Ha :-)

I've been impressed with all the podiatrists, they have all explained and offered things, never felt rushed. The appointment for my orthotics was classed as 30-45 mins. Only advantage to damaging my foot!
