Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Had that conversation with Dave's father a few days ago, Alicia. He was saying how hard it was when they moved to the retirement place.
He didn't realise I'd left my whole life behind in Canada, bar two suitcases.

You're very brave. It's hard not to accumulate things that make your life more comfortable, or carry memories. To say nothing of things you just like.

I need to get more of my memories backup up redundantly in the cloud - but don't have the time right now to start digitizing all those notebooks. Lack of energy makes choosing to spend time putting photos through the scanner less appealing.

I'm sure I can let most of it go - but every single thing left in this house is a hard decision; we've already dumped a metric ton of easy decisions.

Did Dave's dad say if he missed anything in particular? Were there things he wished he had kept?

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I have a survey about humorous sff books at the moment. It’s my effort to try and write one more people will like. If anyone thinks they’d like to do it - it’s only 5 questions and one of those is, ‘what is your name?’ I’ll post a link. I could even do a thread but I’ll only put it in the wrong place ... I might blog about it this week, that would help!

Cheers

No harm in it being at the top of the group for a few days.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good morning!

It's ever so muggy and very still. If I was back home, I'd say a big thunderstorm was on its way. No idea about here. Weather patterns here baffle me.

I see the Thai cave rescue is gonna be made into a film. I told Dave that would happen days ago. Wonder if a book will come first.

message 6411: by Jim (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning, all. Turned grey here, though it's still warm - I think we're due some rain tomorrow.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning! As long as someone doesn't make a film about the way we (once again ) got stuffed in the footie!

I've got the WIP open already! Yay. Today will be progress day. Probably.

It's clearing here, so you are probably safe.

Don't forget to note the Roman stonework in places at the base of the outside walls of the castle. It's much better quality than the later stuff.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Ah, thanks Will.

Might scoot off after we've had a bite to eat.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments We have drizzle! First precipitation since June 1st at 3.15pm. Which I remember because it was a torrential thunderstorm and I was out litter picking on the beach :)

message 6419: by M.T. (new)

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments We have sun again, which is nice because the last couple of days have been a bit chilly. Although you know you’re getting used to the heat when you put a jumper on and discover it’s only gone down to about 75/23.

Hmm.... Have had a dodgy tum this week so today I’m going out to a restaurant because I’m sensible like that. I’m not sure if it’s just a really bad ibs attack or I’ve actually caught something, presumabably something I’ve had before as it’s just kind of rumbling rather than turning into anything. Have also gone down with McOther’s aeroplane cold Mmmm fresh from Ryanair. Ugh. Still it’s not too bad, I just feel a bit dizzy because it’s gone to my sinuses.

Cheers

Mwahahahargh! Yeh and don’t cough! Strangely I felt so much better after an inordinate amount of wine yesterday evening and today things are a lot less grim so far. I think, if it was possible, I’d just not eat anything today and that would probably get me over it. I just keep having things I need to go to.

Cheers

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Disappointing evening all round, builder got held up in traffic so is now coming on Sun, hopefully he can start next week. Nearly gave up on watching the match during extra time. We should be proud of them though, and thought Gareth Southgate going round hugging and consoling them all was nice. Then got woke up early by heavy rain – sounded really odd in the chimney and my new flue, slightly worrying. We do need some rain though, hopefully will help with the moor fires. Got loads of colleagues in today! Made the mistake of walking barefoot this morning, feet really sore and stupidly forgot my anti-inflams.

Glad you are feeling a bit better today MT. Hope you get to the castle Patti.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Anyone watching the ITV programme about the serial killer in Pembrokeshire? My daughter’s ex fiancée bought the house where the first murders took place. We used to keep the horses there where he used to cut through to get home after his burglaries.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments For anyone watching the brilliant Keeping Faith on BBC1: that's shot entirely around where I live. The court is the Grade 1 listed Guildhall in Carmarthen, the solicitors offices are in Carmarthen, and most of the rest is shot around laughrne, where Dylan Thomas lived.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Oh, and my daughter has a claim to fame now: she has jammed on stage with the girl who did the music for Keeping Faith... (about 4 years ago, before Amy Wadge got famous

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments We’re all name dropping now then 😁. If my daughter had married the next one on her ex fiancé list she’d have been related (very loosely) to Bradley/Chelsea Manning.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I can see the Texaco refinery from my house Mary, thank goodness though the wind doesn’t blow from that direction. It’s not Texaco now though, it’s changed hands.
My friends in the French village aren’t happy, the gens du voyage are refusing to leave until one of them who ran over a policeman has been let out of jail so all the children’s school sports and fun for the 14 th July plus the annual dance has had to be cancelled.

The house once rebuilt wasn’t spooky but we once terrified an apprentice blacksmith. Turnip under the arm and coat over the head in the beams of the security light. Poor lad. He did scream.
The creepy thing about it was the murderer was on the loose for years after the murders and used the place as a shortcut home. He had holes in fences everywhere. He also raped 2 & assaulted 4 teenagers at gun point. They glossed over that. Our friend swears he was responsible for an old lady’s death that they never investigated. She drowned in her bath, the door was locked and the key never found and she’d got a clean fire grate which was the only means of hot water. There’s no way she’d have bathed in cold water. The original police enquiry was absolutely hopeless. If they’d have listened to my husband they might have found him after the fire at the first murders. We came past on the night, it was a Sod’s law event. Long straight road and a car parked awkwardly so we had to slow down to a stop behind it to let the only other car pass. The car parked was unusual it was a limited edition colour and it turns out he bought it with his game show winnings, my husband insisted it was a special but they wanted to find a homosexual in a Land Rover, the police had preconceived ideas at first. They interviewed every Land Rover owner in the county. They also said for a week that it was a murder suicide of the brother and sister, both with their hands tied behind their backs???? They also more recently found a septic tank in his garden had dozens of keys and came back to our friends to try some in his old doors. Thank goodness for forensic science.

message 6450: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments We listened to the program after Keeping Faith (recorded it). I spent most of my time grumbling about how poor the Police enquiry had been, and how daft they were - interrogating the bloke for 4 days before they had got the slightest scrap of hard evidence against him seems pointless. And well over £ 1 million of forensic time spent to get nothing at all, until -reasonably this time - the plod threatened to get a different forensic team in. And amazingly, stuff suddenly turned up. It all seemed very contrived, as if they pinned the crime on the right bloke almost by accident.
