Kelly Clayton | 1040 comments Phew - just read through the last 82 posts that appeared since I last had a second to myself! I see lots has been going on.

So glad the cat came back, Benjamin. So many go missing in Jersey I'm half-tempted to think something nefarious is going on. Mind you, there also appear to be quite a few cats who get looked after by more than one household.

Off to meet friends at 4pm for a cuppa at the island's poshest hotel. It is a birthday celebration and they have booked themselves in for dinner and an overnight stay. It is round the corner from where we live so with any luck we'll be back by 5pm and I can get back into my lounging-about tracksuit.

He's a black pomeranian! And a small needy nusiance, so far.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Well, I'm more wiped out, but won some chocolate that is going on our tombola, and a bottle of champagne we can use as a prize for the sponsored walk. I've never seen the rescue so busy, we queued for half an hour to get in! Didn't manage to get everything I needed from the shops though

Ouch Lynne! Hope you enjoyed the drink Kelly, am shocked that lots of cats go missing in Jersey.

Poor Dave has to keep rewinding the tv cuz I'm hacking over the soundtrack.

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments Wow, glad everything is ticking along everyone. Patti I'm sorry you're feeling rough, Desley too.

Had an interesting weekend. Mum's birthday. All the family was down, Dad was pretty good but two of our carers are a lovely mother and daughter team. Sat am, the Mum's husband and daughter's dad, died of an aneurism. Luckily the other 24 hour lady was able to come - dad sleeps about 4 hours a night at the moment and spends the rest shouting things like, 'wake up! I'm bored!'

We are all in shock rather and the mum and daughter team are the ones who drive so have been busy getting mum lifts to all her appointments.

On the up side, mum, brother and sis in law sat me down and told me I must pay myself for the time I spend on Mum and Dad admin at the same rate as the lady who helps mum at home. And I managed to get a lasting power of attorney form for their health done and signed which is a weight off.

I have so little time for anything else that it is a huge relief to earn something for the stuff I spend a lot of time doing at the expense of my actual job, if that makes sense. I've run out of cash for my books so couldn't afford to have the next novel edited or a cover done for a year while I saved up. Couldn't afford a cover for the short I've just had edited either. At least now that will be easier ... Down to six months. Maybe less if I can get some ads to work.

Cheers

MTM

Sorry to hear your carers had a family tragedy.

Glad the other stuff is sorted - power of attorney papers make many things easier, and you should definitely not be putting in the endless hours without remuneration. Good for your family for insisting.

message 508: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments It's so good that your family is understanding of the sacrifices you're making, Mary. Of course you should be compensated for it. That's a no-brainer. Isn't there some sort of gov't scheme for compensation for family members? I think Dave's father gets a stipend for Dave's mum. Worth looking into if you haven't, but I expect you have.

Good morning.

Don't think I barked too much in the night. No complaints from my lovely man, anyway.
I do feel rather bruised all over, mind...
No, I'm sure he didn't pinch me into silence. ;)

The sun is meant to shine today. Think I'll get out on the balcony and soak up some vitamin D.
Glad I'm not working, but I'd drag myself in if they needed me.
Maybe.

Found a packet of balsam tissues I had squirrelled away, thank goodness.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Good morning all. Sending healing vibes over the ether to Patti.

It's a busy day filling in forms for me. They only went and offered me that job, the swines. Now I have to get used to the rail commute again,

message 510: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks, Will. I'm finding moaning is helping me feel better.

I must have man flu.

Congrats on the job!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12592 comments Morning all, wet here. Hopefully an uneventful day at work, then a vet visit.

Sorry that your carers have had a bereavement MT, good luck sorting arrangements. Glad that your family are appreciating what you do, and that it gives you some breathing space. Glad you are feeling better Patti. Congrats on the job Will, good luck with the commute

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Good morning, well I hope it is but I’ll have to get out of bed to find out, I’ve been really lazy while I’m not looking after grandson, it will be a real shock to my system when again.
Have a good day all.

message 513: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Morning all! Damp here as well, though the rain seems to thankfully be holding off.

Congratulations, Will. And that sounds like a horrible mess, MT - glad you seem to be getting some of it sorted. Caring is basically a second job, and so many people go unrecognised for it.

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments I didn’t reply to Mary’s comments but I’ve been thinking about you, you’re making light of your situation. I’m glad your time and effort is being acknowledged at last. Those who have been in similar situations can see the knock on effect long term caring has on family. Dementia is very cruel, some incidents are easy to laugh at but continually it becomes very hard.
Courage and remind yourself it doesn’t last forever even if it feels like it. Xxx

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Congrats on the job, Will. Now you will be able to have clear writing time on the commute. Possibly several hours every time there is a points failure.

Mary, you need recompensing. For one thing, anyone else would be paid. For another, is stops you feeling totally used and sat-upon.

Well done of the job, Will. Go get 'em.

Been writing an unexpected Christmas story this morning for a Facebook group. I didn't expect to write one but it just came, and haunted me till I wrote it.

So lovely to see you and so, so happy for our Emzabubbles!

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments HI JUD! *waves*
And WAHEY for our Emzibah :)

Good afternoon all. It has been raining off and on all day and it never really got to proper daylight. After the wonderful two days we had at the weekend that's a bit of a comedown, frankly. I have a similar length of commute as Will MJ. Apparently the average is 48 mins so I don't envy the poor sod who is balancing me (I know that's not really how statistics work but)

message 528: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You're completely horrid.

Dave tells me I'm snuffling in a most disagreeable manner.

If he continues to be unkind to me, I'm gonna wipe my nose on his shoulder.

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4834 comments Please do. Why should you be miserable alone?

message 530: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments He should wear it as a badge of honour.

Bodily fluids on shoulders are a man thing. You know that you've achieved alpha male status if you have baby vomit on your shoulder. Naturally, it has to be your own offspring, or grandchild offspring. That milky patch of white upchuck on your shirt says that your wedding tackle is working, and we all like to proclaim that to the world.

I hear that young ladies have a similar badge of honour. You know who your besties are if they hold back your hair while you call god on the porcelain telephone.

Or so I am told. Not being female or having much hair on my head, I have to take these things on trust.

Patty there is carers allowance but you have to be actually doing caring in the house with them. The admin side of it doesn't count.

Congrats on the job Will. I am sure you'll put the commute time to good use.

Safe travels, Kelly!

A very good friend of ours' will be defending his doctoral thesis later today. Send out some good vibes to him if you can. He's worked his arse off for it, while holding down a full time job and raising three young children. I'm very proud of him.

Pass on my best wishes.

message 538: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) Good luck to your friend, Patti!

Elizabeth White | 1761 comments Good morning everyone!

Himself literally kicked me out of bed this am, so here I am, albeit limping slightly (he's still asleep).

Seems like you've been in the wars, Patti - I hope the fates declare a peace treaty soon. Good vibes to your friend.

I used to get a lot of reading and writing done on my hour-long commutes. Also, I'd be unwound by the time I reached home at the end of the day.

Right, off for a cuppa.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Good morning all. Thanks for the good wishes about the job.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Morning all. Wet here too. But not wet enough to wash away the abundant seagull production from ALL EIGHT PANES of my sitting room windows. Not sure how it managed to do that in one fly past...

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Morning. Just back from an unscheduled shopping trip - we usually go Thursday or Friday but tomorrow we're having son and grandson (aww!) for a few days so got in extras. Our lovely daughter-in-law will be in hospital here from tomorrow morning - and they live about 45 miles away - for a fortnight. I think we're going to have regular two or three day stopovers from the lads. The museum service have granted him compassionate leave.
