It sounds fascinating!

No! Now I write a synopsis and a few chapters, then send it to my agent. BRAVE NEW GIRL sold just like that this month, based on a 4,000 word, two-book synopsis and 3 chapters.

Noooooo! I can't dance at all, and I feel super self-conscious when someone makes me. ;(

That book bruised my soul. It was SO tough. But I'm very proud of it. ;)

No, it's adult, but it should be fine for older teens. It's from MIRA Books, who've published all of my adult books so far except my indie experiment.

Stephen King."

No! But I have met several others I really admire. Holly Black and Scott Westerfeld, among others.

I don't know! As many as the sales demand, I guess! The only restriction is that I have to write them in my spare time between contracted books.

I'm excited about it too. It's taken up a huge amount of my past few years, and it's almost here!

They're creatures who have no physical form as we know it. They can't experience any physical sensation except through human bodies, but they're not religiously affiliated. That's what Finn tries to explain to her. That's why holy water and crosses don't work.

When they came into our world, we called them demons because they "possessed" bodies. They just sort of appropriated our vision of them. ;)

This is the thing about being a writer that I despise the most. I would much rather write what I want and then sell it. It just doesn't work that way unfortunately.

Yes, that's true. I never get to write two books in the same series in a row. I'm always going from one series to the next, because of deadlines, but that functions as a sort of palate cleaner for me!

Right now, it's two books in a series, and I LOVE THEM SO HARD!

Ah so then would you classify them more as aliens?

It is SO funny and clever!

Rachel (rachelvincent) | 51 comments Carly wrote: "When writing YA and adult novels, what is your target word count for both genres?"

That depends upon the contract, sometimes. And on how far into the series a book is. My YAs these days fall between 75,000 and 90,000 words. My adult books typically run 100,000 or more.

I actually love writing synopses. For me, they make writing the actual book go so much faster! (though the plot does invariably change as I write it.)
