Tania U This is a thread for our group's reviews. You can leave one if you've been to at least one of our meetings.

The goal is give potential members an idea about what we are like, what to expect and what not to expect from our meetups.

You can express your impressions freely or, for example, describe how the discussion(s) unfolded (length, number of participants, how many people talked, what the discussion gravitated towards - and how all this felt to you).

Thank you in advance.

M. Barghouthi | 2 comments I am currently an on/off member in 4 different book clubs in Paris, and this one is probably the best.

To start with, the choice of books is excellent, a mix of classics and modern books from a variety of countries.

Small discussion group (7-10) in a cozy setting, this intimate format allows everyone to listen and express his opinions much better. And makes it easier to reduce side discussions and focus the dialogue on the plot and the characters (if you're here to discuss the last Game of Thrones episode you'd probably be a bit disappointed).

Great job Tania and Kevin! I'll try my best to come more often.

Marilou | 3 comments What more pleasant way to finish a book than to share it with this smart and thoughtful group? The discussions are always interesting and each & everyone's perspective always insightful.

I've been a member for exactly a year now and I'm here to stay! More power to the English Book Club in Paris!

Hannah | 1 comments My biggest critique is that after reading the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society that this group does not have a more creative name. Perhaps we can come up with one at the next meeting.
Discussion is always centered on the reading and the selections are very democratic. Every participant has ample time to express his or herself and there is plenty of respectful disagreement to keep the evening lively.

Vicky (vickyarose) | 9 comments I have attended this group for the past year or so, while living in Paris on a work assignment from Australia. It was so great to be able to join a bookclub where I could read and discuss the books in English, as my French is not sufficient for conversation. Also, many of the books we read are translated into many languages, so others often read in their native tongues also. It also gives me a better appreciation for translation and the differences in language when we discussed our opinions about the translation and the language used.

The group is friendly, welcoming to newcomers and not too big which means everyone gets lots of opportunity to discuss their opinions.
There is a good variety of books, which meant I read things I wouldn't have otherwise, which is one of the reasons I like to be part of a bookclub, and an interesting variety of people which means a variety of opinions, to help me think about the various themes and topics differently as a result of the discussion.

I will miss this group now I am returning to Australia, and wish them all the best for the future.

John Pope Here you will find good books and discussions with fun people, who do not stop at a text's first layer (the "oh, I liked it" syndrome). The meeting size is limited, which allows for more interaction and a chance for everyone to express themselves. The group is very international, which guarantees a wide variety of cultural viewpoints. Another plus: the meetings are held in a clean, quiet space.

Ludovic | 1 comments (Hey, I'm not a native speaker, so please have pity and tolerate my clumsiness)

Even though I'm an avid reader, I've never been to any book club before, worse I thought that such a group would be quite boring and even worse ... I was wrong (albeit this one time, I'm quite happy to have been wrong).

In fact, it's a great group with interesting people from various backgrounds, a calm and inexpensive place and just the right number of people attending to have exciting and interactive conversations.

Since then, I've also tried others bookclub, but this one is by far my favorite.

Marilou | 3 comments What a fetching new name! Now I'm even more eager to join you, merry readers, in penetrating* book discussions!

Maria | 1 comments If you enjoy discussing a good book over a cup of tea in a quiet place with like-minded people this is the place to go in Paris! Well organized and serious book club.

message 10: by Peter (new)

Peter | 2 comments I only went to a few meetings but I really liked the discussions around the monthly selection. The discussion is light-hearted but comprehensive at the same time . The books are democratically chosen and you get even (if you like the book club as much as I did and have the absolute intention of coming back) to make suggestions for the next meetings.

The atmosphere is friendly, welcoming, and contributes to voice impressions at ease on the discussed book and its related topics. The cosy space also helps a lot to the warmth of the discussions. The participants from various backgrounds have always been pleasant people to talk with and I really enjoy myself each time I go.

The debates unfold above all in a civilised and respectful way, bringing new points of view and contributing to enrich the reading with keen observations from every member (one particular meeting made me really enjoy having read a book which I, beforehand, regretted having "wasted time" reading it... ).

Intending to return as long as I can! :)

Juliette | 1 comments Hi :) just wanted to check that there is no change and that this group is online meetings only still, not in real life anymore? I know that’s what’s stated in the description but just thought I’ll double check! Cheerio x
