I finished part 2 and the second interlude last night. I don't have much else to add apart from what I said earlier though.

Well I do, but I posted it in my other group's discussion, and I doubt much of it is worth reposting here. A lot of it was responding to other comments really.

(view spoiler)[My biggest takeaway from this section is questions about Azure. Who is she really? Wherever they ended up from the gateway, she seems to recognize (and dislike) it.

I'm a bit surprised Sanderson killed off Elhokar. He's a secondary character, but still pretty important. Moash finally got to kill him too.

I wonder what will become of everyone left behind. It appears only the 4 of them were transported. I'm especially interested in the fate of the two from Bridge 4. Presumably without Kaladin there they are powerless again.

One of the most interesting epigraphs in this section talked about getting shard plate after swearing the 4th oath.

All these flashbacks of Dalinar make him much harder to like. Did losing his memories make him a better man? Or was that just age/wisdom? What will the return of his memories mean for him moving forward? (hide spoiler)]

It appears Azure is indeed Vivenna from Warbringer. First we see her hair change color. Then near the end of this section she talks of hunting a sword and mentions Zahel.

Szeth having chapters is great. We learn a lot about the Skybreakers, but I'm really annoyed at where his chapters leave off. I worry he's going to be corrupted again.

I've really loved all the world building in Shadesmer. Adolin seeing the dead spren that is his sword is haunting. I wonder if he can somehow revive her.

Shallan seems to be finally accepting who she is. Maybe? It's hard to tell as she slips personas so easily.

Her and Kalladin seem to be growing closer, and Andollin has noticed. I REALLY HATE love triangles. I don't want this to be a thing. It's seemed inevitable since the last book though.

I've had a hard time with Dalinar's flashbacks. I really don't like the man he used to be. I wonder though how much was really him, and how much was this Nergaoul.

He attempts to reach out to Venli with his visions. I can't tell if they had any effect. It seems like they should be fighting together against a common enemy in Odium and the void spren.

He's now been sabotaged politically by Taravangian. Will he be able to recover? I was honestly expecting something much worse, but maybe I'm underestimating the damage it's caused.

And of course the biggest reveal of all. Humans are the true Voidbringers. (hide spoiler)]

I like that she's finding her lies harder to unravel, but I also feel like she's forgetting a lot of (what seem to me) obvious problems with the games she's playing. I hope she levels out soon. Right now I'm finding her a little hard to invest in because she keeps crossing lines that don't feel true to character. I think we're supposed to feel that she is lost, and I can buy it for now, but I hope she firms up on this trip. Still going to be STORMING MAD if the concerns I voiced in an earlier spoiler happen. Idk that I see her with Renarin.
Hopes of Kaladin being bi are dashed, so that's out of the picture too. I think she and Adolin make sense, if she doesn't screw everything up and make me mad at Brandon for having a woman who seduces honor, one who lies to cheat honor, and one who is entirely emotionless on the romance scale. So I made the "mistake" of starting part 5 last night intending to finish today. Instead I stayed up late to finish the book. I highly recommend not starting part 5 unless you intend to finish the whole thing.

I think this is my least favorite of the series so far, but it's still an easy 5 star read to me. This last section was especially great.

So much happened here, I'll probably forget to bring it all up.

Spoilers for the end of the Oathbringer:

(view spoiler)[My favorite part was easily Lift, Szeth and Nightblood. Really though anytime Lift is there is fun. I loved her calling Dalinar Grandpa.

I was really hoping that Szeth would join with Dalinar. Interesting that Nin just accepted it and left. He also promised to teach Szeth Division. Even though they are now on opposite sides.

It's funny how Azure didn't go with Kalladin, etc and missed Nightblood. I assume we'll be seeing her again.

Am I wrong, or was the homeless man in the flashbacks that Dalinar shared drinks with the same that Moash killed to end Jezrien. I'm also confused because his death seemed to effect Ash and Taln. Too many names, I can't keep the heralds straight.

I really like how Adolin's shardblade helped him in Shadesmer. He seems to be talking to her and knows her name. I hope he can somehow restore her, without becoming a Radiant himself. I don't want all the main characters to be Radiants. I'm also glad he turned down being king.

It's cool they chose Jansah to rule. She still has way too many secrets though. Seeing her fight was awesome. I loved how she used soulcasting.

Teft and Lopen are now full Radiants. Poor Rock is struggling with killing Arlman to save Kalladin's life. I hope he can recover. And the two bridge 4 left behind in Kholinar are still alive and have Shallan's men and Elhokar's son are with them. That was a nice thing to learn.

I'm a little disappointed in Kalladin's story. Sanderson teased us with the 4th ideal, and then held it back. I know this is Dalinar's book, it seems like he's ready for it.

I'm SO HAPPY that the possible love triangle is over before it really started. I'm glad Shallan took control and opened up to Andolin. I'll be curious to see how she deals with her multiple aspects moving forward.

Learning Dalinar's past was tough, but he a huge amount of character development in this book as a result and I like him even more now than before. We finally see him lose his memory. It turns out Nightwatcher is to Cultivation like Stormfather was to Honor. It sounds like Odium has one too, but Stormfather says it's asleep.

The uniting of the three realms was awesome and the way he captured the Spren that was causing the Thrill. I guess that explains why they were after that huge Ruby.

I'm disappointed that Moash is taking the path that he is, but I suppose we need to have some well developed villains. I hate cartoon villains so it's good to see him do this, even if it's not how I'd like it to go.

Speaking of, I had been holding out hope that Taravangian would redeem himself. Instead he's made everything way worse. He was behind the stealing of the honorblade from bridge 4 and he let the Voidbringers into Urithiru. Did we previously know his condition was from Nightwatcher?

Finally, I was going to RIOT if Renarin was made a villain. I'm glad the time between the reveal that he bonded a voidspren and Jansah staying her hand was fairly short. I'll be curious to see what we learn about his bond moving forward. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah, my main restrictions were outside obligations. I had a 4 day weekend and mostly didn't leave my house and just read by book. The benefits of living alone and 400+ miles away from family I guess.

It took me 11 days (partially due to my shipping issues) to read the first 57% of the book, and 3 days to read the last 43%. I suspect I could have easily read the whole thing this past weekend if need be, despite my painfully slow reading pace.

I wanted to veer sorta off topic for a minute--has anyone read The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington? I mention it because I finished book one a few months ago and LOVED it. Very Sanderson-esque (in a good way). The magic is pretty cool, but the world-building and characters are great. Highly recommended for epic fantasy fans.

And in case it needs to be said I don't work for the publisher, nor am I James Islington (though I wish). I've been throwing this book at everyone because I think it's truly great.

Okay. I've just finished Chapter 110 of Oathbringer.

-I felt like the conversation between Kaladin and Shallan wasn't...exactly right. I was waiting for him to say how it gave him hope to see that she could keep it together, or that he was ashamed that he couldn't be as strong as her, and for her to fall apart a little with him. I am glad instead she fell apart with Adolin, but the rest rang a little false to me.

-I don't find the love triangle very interesting, but at the same time I get nervous every time it comes up. I hope it settles down soon. She should pick Adolin.

-I was expecting to hear more about Rlain by now? Kaladin spent all that time with him. Also, Kal sure bounced back from watching everything fall apart pretty quick. I was again hoping for a stronger scene between him and Adolin. Adolin helped get him going, but Kaladin needs a cause and a commander. That could have been an extremely powerful moment, watching Adolin become the battlelord to give Kaladin the order he needed to pick up his broken parts.

-Really curious how Azure went from queen to bounty hunter to commander and is now gonna finger guns and ride off into the sunset.

-Some of the characters it feels like I can picture Brandon naming them. "I need, like, an evil, fantastical sounding name for a creature who kinda shapes the darkness to look like humanity. Like a reshaper of reality. Fuck it. Re'Shephir. Good enough.

I didn't get to process it as I'd have liked because Kaladin was full on breakdown and yet I didn't feel the emotional pull. I too hope that Skar and Hobber was it? make it okay. That'd suck. It was fairly poignant though that Elhokar was just about to redeem himself, both as a Radiant and a man when he was killed. (hide spoiler)]

And every time he tries to be good, he gets stabbed in the back. Yet he persists. I like that. I hope they play with it more, that he finds some way to leash the animal, rather than muzzling it. Agreed, Brandon played with my emotions a lot here but always stabilized. Kaladin needs to catch a frickin' break soon, though. I mean I guess his family's still alive, but that seems like small concessions for a man who willingly let his body break what was it 5 times? in the final fight so that he could save Dalinar?

I was FREAKING OUT when Odium approached Dalinar. It was so close. It was such a beautiful moment when you're thinking back on the flashbacks, wondering if he's gonna break again or if he'd end up defying everyone. I love that Renarin has a bad spren who is trying to be helpful. I'm really curious to know how that will turn out. Also thank the Almighty that the love triangle is over. I agree, that was a good pivot point. I'm glad she's with Adolin.

There are a lot of things that got set in motion. What's Venli going to do with her new listeners? How far will Taravangian go? What's Moash going to be now? Will other Heralds die? Will Shallan solidify? Will Teft get it together? Poor Teft. His Ideal cut me to the quick.

The one thing that I did not love, and I should edit my review to include was that one infodump. I wish that could have been done some otherway, where they learn about the Heralds and their torment (OMG! Taln's a badass! And so sweet! Why?)

I've found the gradual unravelling of Dalinar's past/character a fascinating part of the story. He's obviously deeply flawed but trying to do the right thing - which to me makes him a compelling if not necessarily likeable character.

It must be tough having to come up with names for literally hundreds of characters/places... who can blame him for cutting corners occasionally?
I mean, Tolkien invented entire languages for his books, but still couldn't come up with a better name for a scary mountain than 'Mt Doom'.

I'm totally behind now with less opportunity to read, so I'm enviously eyeing all those lovely spoiler links, haha. Anyway, I just finished Part 2 of Oathbringer, and here are a couple of thoughts.

(view spoiler)[Part 2 somehow seemed to me less gripping than any other part of the series, not exactly sure why. There were lots more POVs with the different members of Bridge Four, so the narrative did feel somewhat disjoint at times, but I actually enjoyed the Bridge Four bits.

I loved it that we're learning more about them, I was super happy to see Rock reunited with his family, and I'm still waiting to learn more about him, there IS a deeper and bigger story there, and I want to know it! I feel so sorry for Teft, I didn't expect it at all, if there were any signs of his addiction previously, they'd eluded me.

But I definitely have a complaint about the the Bridge Four member representation! Where is my Renarin POV?! I'm positively demanding it! The scene by the end of Part 2 where he discovers the ancient library was one of the best not only in this book, but in the series so far for me. Because, an ancient library, a mysterious language, and Renarin finally showing the dumb non-believers in him what he can do (although I'm sure he can do tons more, and I just can't wait to see that!)

Another comment is I find myself growing annoyed with Shallan. I really enjoyed her character development in WoR, but in Oathbringer so far she's just continuously falling apart in her inability to decide what she wants. I mean it was clear she didn't know that before either, so it's annoying to only see her realise that now, but still not really do anything about that. Also, I'm very much not a fan of her now habit of creating new personalities every time she finds something difficult or uncomfortable. But mostly, I guess I just want more development for her character as well, hopefully things will change by the end of the book.

And finally, another absolutely awesome thing so far (besides the discovery of the library) was of course Dalinar meeting Odium! I love it that it's all so uncertain now, and we basically have no clue as to who in fact is the bad guy. That's the development I'm enjoying immensely. Also, from what Odium says about Dalinar having met her before but having lost his memory of the event, does it mean that Nightwatcher and Cultivation are in fact the same being? Lovely, lovely secrets, as Pattern might say. (hide spoiler)]

This happened to me. I read WoK and then my entire reading schedule--nay, my entire life--was fully upended: library books went overdue, kids got neglected, meals were burnt, dust started breeding more dust in the corners of the living room. I blame Allison.

I don't remember my cover being upside down. However, I also have only the fuzziest recollection OF the cover. They can be tricksy, these covers, I choose to follow the path of the Almighty and not speculate on the future of what might be contained in books behind those covers.

Finished it earlier today. Although I have to agree with most readers on this book as being my least favorite of the series (but still great!), Dalinar’s backstory was my favorite of the three.
