I butt in as non-Tome Raider to give my 2 cents... I don't disagree with you Petrik, it's way more fun when everybody is activ on a buddy read, but I don't think that anyone is only pretending to do a Buddy Read... I think the whole competition is about to trust each other with the added points, there is also no indication that one truely read the books listed (without BR participation) and still I don't think someone is cheating this way :D

Now you have me paranoid... am I talking enough in my Buddy Reads?... Sometimes I worry since I read so fast, and by the time I get home from work the book is half over or over already, and it's hard to talk about early in the book because I know how it turns out later in the book... I try to follow the discussion for at least a week after finishing and still participate in the discussion a bit, where possible...

Maybe I should rephrase my words but my main point is that I'm saying it's possible to do it easily if anyone want to because so far, there are a few BR thread that doesn't have the amount of discussions that made it become a "BR" from my experience, that's all. :)

I agree, my commenting is mostly reliant on where I am compared to other readers. If everyone's ahead, I hate commenting because people inevitably say something in agreement that spoils something. It's also difficult to get enthused enough to comment during a short (meh) book when it has been one day and you're almost through the entire thing lol. Some books are better for BRs than others.

Also, I don't comment a lot if I hate the book, since I don't want to sour other people's minds, unless other people are also hating the book. Then it's fun to bash it together :-)

Come to think of it, the MODs didn't even discuss a "what if someone cheats" solution, which I guess is a testament to the faith we have in the group. If someone does cheat, we have some seriously observant people in this group, so I don't think they'd get far lol. They'd have to deal with Niki opening a can of whoopass! Be afraid...

This is also why I'm such a horrible buddy reader partner, lain. It's why I very rarely participate in one because to me, a BR is an active discussion together and yet I can't participate in one unless I risk spoiling my self (if I'm late) or have nothing to offer other than "yes I agree" because I'm way too far ahead.
That's why I mentioned BR points should be lower but this is just an opinion formed from my experience with BR's. I did have a few BR, they goes on until 100-200 comments most of the time even though the participants were only 5. But even if I finished first, I try to always participate by offering comments as spoiler free as possible to the discussions. It's why I'm shocked that so many readers from the group participate in more than 5 BR's, sometimes up to 10 in less than 3 weeks.
Like how?? do you still participate in ALL ten ongoing BR discussions, or just leave it after you finished the book? Again, this is just from my perspective.

You always say things in the exact way that makes me go "YEAH! What she said." lol

Btw.. I hope I didn't spark any heated discussion or something.. Seriously, I really could care less on the BR points, it's just an input from my perspective. Don't take it seriously.. xD

It's really a slow burn, Veronica. Make sure to start it expecting that :)

100 - 200 comments? Holy shit!! It now becomes clear why some of the ones going might seem pathetic hahaha.

(They're on other group before I got tired with BR xD) That's why, like all reviews, this is solely from my past experiences.
Niki Hawkes wrote: "100 - 200 comments? Holy shit!! It now becomes clear why some of the ones going might seem pathetic hahaha."I know the BRs for both Oathbringer and Gardens of the Moon are both pretty long.
Maybe you're the lynchpin to good discussion (as is evident by the participation here with this topic). ;P

Personally, I'm super active in the Buddy Read for the 24-48hrs I'm reading, and it slows down as I respond to replies and then fade away to my next one... But then, I only read one book at a time, so each book goes fast... it's different for the people who do 2-3 Buddy Reads at once, jumping back and forth between books as the mood strikes...
I'm one of those people you mentioned who has done 11 Buddy Reads (and 6 side reads) already this year... and my comment count has ballooned... 2162 now... that's nearly 1000 comments in a month or 2, I think...

Niki Hawkes wrote: "Maybe you're the lynchpin to good discussion (as is evident by the participation here with this topic). ;P"Nah, I think it's more about the books. I think you're right about some books just not really inspiring much discussion because they're so straightforward there's just not much to talk about or theorize over.

In order to go that long, you need some really lively discussion... or Choko to stride in and comment 10x in a row to the last 2 pages of comments... :D
Malice was like that...
Other times, fewer people don't get quite the same results...
Me, Laura, and Delitealex commented 49x on Steeplejack... and me and Choko generated 24 comments in 18hrs on our quick Heart on Fire buddy read (mostly negative commiseration)...

I understand what you wanted to say, Petrik.Buddy reads for me are about the book discussion. If I am just reading the comments I am just reading a forum.
That's why I don't commit to too many buddy reads. But when I participate in one, I really do. :)
This doesn't have anything to do with the competition, or points, or anything. It is just my view of what a buddy read is for me.
I think the GOTM BR is doing really well with using spoiler tags so people who aren't as far ahead don't run the risk of messing up someone's experience. The other ones I'm in are the Sookie Stackhouse ones, and on there the conversation is more about how we feel about characters and not so much the plot.... there are ways around a spoilery BR.

I didn't used to take the mods seriously when they said I was so talkative that I might overtake Scott's high comment count... I've still got a ways to go, tho ;) ... he has 4869 comments over 4x as long... I've only been in the group 5 months
Oathbringer and Malazan always felt like the exception with their 10+ pages of comments... so much hype... luckily the hype has been accurate...

Exactly my thoughts, Miche! That's how I view buddy read as well :)
And if I don't like the book I just complain about it. Niki saw it first handed at The Dragon Reborn. lol

Aww, you shouldn't feel like you can't comment if you don't like a book that everyone else does. All viewpoints are valid. It's perfectly fine to say "This book didn't work for me because reasons x,y,z...".

I don't want to spoil anyone else's enjoyment of the book. If I had something constructive to say (like for the Sevenwaters books) I'd feel free to go ahead and rant about it ;-)

I don't think it's noble. I think it's cowardice. I don't want all the members who don't agree with me to start chasing after me with pitchforks for my vile ideas.
