Side note: man my reading has tanked these last 2 weeks. Kids are home until school starts in a week and they are just keeping me from listening to anything. I've totally fallen behind on my August buddy reads and my goodreads thread reading. Can't wait for them to go back to school so I can get back to you guys and my books :-)
Oh, but I did finish this one today. I have an hour commute to a job interview so I got a lot of good listening time in :-)No Time Like the Past

Thanks guys :)
Worse case scenario, I can always unleash my spreadsheet army at it :p
In the meantime, I'll be away for a few days, lazing in the sun on a mountainside!
To those concerned, just keep posting your reads and I'll update it all when I get back to civilization xD

oh good ^_^ I love how much fun you seem to be having with Malazan. :D
I've been doing everything but reading lately, and that's not normal for me lol. I feel like a social butterfly (an exhausted one).

Good. I'm having a very good reading month, being disciplined and sticking to my sked. This just may be my best month (bookwise) this year...not sure, my brain goes vague when it comes to actual numbers and stuff. Let's see how the month ends.....

Btw, I have been meaning to ask, I did some Buddy Read with member from the group through social messaging app instead of on the group for easier communication. Does that still count towards the challenge?

A solid bounce back indeed! Btw, are you planning to read Malazan Empire, Veronica? it's so baddddd
Petrik wrote: "A solid bounce back indeed! Btw, are you planning to read Malazan Empire, Veronica? it's so baddddd ."I haven't been reading any of the side books to this point. If I ever do get around to them I figure I'll read them once I'm done with the main series...or maybe whenever I do a series reread. I've heard that IE's writing gets better.
I am always shocked by the new name of the group. It takes me forever to realize is the new name for the group. Slow, slow brain.

The books and writing get better as they go along. I still think you need to read them because there's a lot of information you wouldn't have otherwise. TBH starts out with a character you would have no introduction to if you hadn't read NoK.
A quick review of the Empire books.
NoK: Good story, poorly written.
RotCG: The first half flat out sucks but the second half is really good.
Stonewielder: Confusing and the storylines don't line up but the writing starts to get better.
OST: Pretty good.
B&B: A lot like SW. Confusing in parts but the writing better.
Assail: Good conclusion.
The amount of info ICE gives you unencrypted makes it work it. Lots of great character information. If you're expecting SE types of empathy you'll be disappointed, greatly.
I will say the two books in Path to Ascendency are awesome. ICE has gotten better and better.

I've been hesitating to read the Malazan Empire series. So far I've only read Dancer's Lament by ICE and it was ok, not amazing but also not completely bad. Since I've also heard that the PTA books are ICE's best books so far I fear that I won't like his earlier books. On the other hand I want to read them because of the information they can give me, like Scott said.
Will you be writing a review of NoK, Petrik?

There's a lot of information about Laseen, Edgewalker, all of the Crimson Guard, Tayshrenn, Korbolo Dom, Mallick Rel........that you won't know of. Especially with how TCG ends and with the Witness trilogy to come it's invaluable. You just cannot expect SE quality. It just isn't. When I list my top ten series Empire isn't even a consideration. It probably doesn't make the top twenty but it's still very worth reading.

Urgh, I just didn't expect the writing to be this off putting. NoK was barely a 2 stars read for me, I hope the second book do get better. I did consult some of Malazan heavy fans I know and they all said the first two books in ME are the MUST read installmetns. I definitely will read RotCG. But the rest, I'll think about it after seeing how I feel about RotCG. I would rather choose missing some connection rather than read four mediocre big books.
I know a lot of Malazan reader like TS, Jody, Michael Britt, and many more only read BotF or didnt continue past RotCG and still have a fantastic time with the main series so I should be okay. That said, no matter what I feel about ME, I'm very intrigued by Path to Ascendancy and will give that a go. Especially hearing that ICE has improved by miles here.

I will write a review, Bea! Just not posting it soon, it left a really bad taste in my mouth. Other than the appearance of characters like Dancer, Kellanved, Sultry, nothing in the book worked for me.
Petrik wrote: "Scott wrote: "Petrik wrote: "A solid bounce back indeed! Btw, are you planning to read Malazan Empire, Veronica? it's so baddddd."The books and writing get better as they go along. I still think ..."
You can definitely read the main series without having read the ICE books. I did that and didn't really feel like I was missing something. There was one storyline I can remember where I was a bit dumbfounded because some characters where appearing out of the blue and then read later that apparently it gets explained in one of the side novels how they came to be there. But beyond that short wtf moment it didn't hinder my reading experience at all.
There's a BR for NoK in autumn, maybe that will motivate me enough to finally pick it up.
And I definitely want to finish the PTA trilogy.
Bea wrote: "There's a BR for NoK in autumn, maybe that will motivate me enough to finally pick it up.And I definitely want to finish the PTA trilogy. "
I'll look for that BR then and read it with the group.

As hours go by, the more my motivation to finish ME decrease hahaha. Anyway, thanks for the confirmation too, Bea! A lot of people have said something along the same line. If you look at the statistic of Malazan BotF and Empire on Goodreads, you'll see that more than 60k people who has read GotM, didn't even bother with Empire. I have no doubt they will offer additional information and enjoyment to the main series, but like you said, it may not be an ABSOLUTELY necessary series to read. Anyway, I'll read the second book in Malazan Empire before making my final decision on whether to continue or give up on the series.
