Stephanie Schofield GRADE LEVEL(S) OF LESSON:
Kindergarten or 1st grade

INTROUDUCE THE TOPIC:
Teacher introduces the concept of prediction. First, ask the students what they think a prediction is and how they can make a prediction. Talk about things that are predicted often like the weather or the outcome of a sports game.

SHARE EXAMPLES:

Explain that prediction means, “ What I think might happen”. Have students get out their white boards and write one prediction they have about how they will get home from school today. Have them share with a partner and then take volunteers to share out. Share out as well as the teacher, “ I think when I get home today I will make dinner and go to bed at 10pm.”

Look at the cover of Suddenly! By Colin McNaughton. Ask the students what they predict might be happening in this photo. Ask them explain why they think this might happen. Based upon what is happening in the photo, and background knowledge from the story of the 3 pigs.

PROVIDE INFORMATION:

Read the students the first page of Suddenly! By Colin McNaughton. Have the students’ make a prediction about what they think will happen next. Have them write this on their whiteboards in a complete sentence and share it with a partner. After a few children share out, read them page two. Ask the students if anyone predicted what was going to happen.
Repeat this process for the next few pages as well as the last page.

Talk about how predictions changed throughout the story. Did anyone start to notice a pattern? What was different between the first prediction you made and the last prediction you made?

SUPERVISE PRACTICE:

As students break up into partners to share about their predictions the teacher is monitoring conversations and helping anyone who might not understand the concept of predicting. Walk around and read all of the students white boards as they are talking with their partner. The teacher also pairs students up intentionally with others at a similar level that will work together well.

ASSESS LEARNING:

The students are writing their answers to the questions on white boards and holding them up for the teacher to read. As the teacher looks over these, they will help any struggling students as well as take note of who is grasping the concepts and who may need one on one time to fully understand prediction.
