Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments Let's start discussing chapters 1 through 5 here. Tomorrow I will start a thread for chapters 6 through 10 and so on.

message 2: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I am undecided on whether I am going to do this as an audiobook or paper book. I notice it is available through audible.com as an audiobook.

This will be my first time reading this book.

What medium is everyone else reading it in? Any other first-timers?

message 3: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments I will be dipping into my Ace paperback from 1957 -- and hope it holds together through its umpteenth reading!

I listened to the audiobook recently, and enjoyed it. I think I'll re-read in print, if I can put my hands on it.

Margaret | 613 comments There seem to be a good many of them floating around the used-book market. Abebooks has five pages of results...

Diana Gotsch | 53 comments Will there be a spoilers allowed conversation for those of us that have read it before (more than once in my case) and have trouble remembering to not give things away?

Yes, that will be the thread for the final few chapters and/or a specific book finished, spoilers allowed thread.

I have read it before several times, but I enjoy doing the group reads and re-reading in sections, stopping to really think about e.g. Chapters 1 - 5 and what they've revealed, how they've been written, what was good, what bad, etc.. Of course I really have to be careful not to give away what I know about the rest of the book when I comment. Comments from others, particularly from first-time readers, often point out something I've never thought about, and that's fun.

message 8: by Janhavi (new)

Janhavi (janhavi88) | 165 comments Yes, this is really fun. I have reread in paper and ebook several times- I might try the audio this time. Hj, how would you compare the audiobook to other Heyer audios? The thing is, because I have many Kindle versions of Heyer, I have got most Heyer audios for 3-5 dollars with Whispersync. Max $8-9. So now I am having real sticker shock at the $42 price for Sylvester!! I doubt I will buy it at that price unless its *really* great.

message 9: by Janhavi (new)

Janhavi (janhavi88) | 165 comments Also, did you hear the abridged Richard Armitage version or the newer unabridged Nicholas Rowe? I suppose I could read the whole thing *and* get the abridged version.

Thanks in advance :D

message 10: by Louise Sparrow (new)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 460 comments I would recommend reading or listening to an unabridged version first if you don't already know the story, you might find things get discussed that have been missed out otherwise, it's a very full novel.

I have listened to and enjoyed the Richard Armitage one as well though... definitely worth getting, it's just probably not a good introduction.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Ok, count me in! it's a reread for me but I do have a copy of this book!

message 12: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments This is downloaded on my Kindle now. I was going to listen to the audiobook but I don't have any audible credits currently and like Janhavi I had complete sticker shock at $42. Eek.

message 13: by Jacquie (new)

Jacquie Scuitto | 261 comments I've gotten to chapter 13 and have been consciously reading and enjoying GH's word pictures of the characters. Phoebe's verbal capture of her characters is definitely equal to GH's own!

Eek! I just checked out the Richard Armitage edition from the library not realizing that it was abridged :(

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I'll jump in as soon as I finish A Civil Contract!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ OK I'm loving my reread of this book - have actually galloped through to chapter 8. I'm loving the plot (a very original one) & the characters!

message 17: by Amy (new)

Amy (aggieamy) | 422 comments I've only had about ten minutes to read over the last few days. :( Work is about to lighten up so I'm ready to jump in.

message 18: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (auntec) | 5 comments I am in! I feel like I am the only one in the group that hasn't read it before. I have read 3 other Heyer books and enjoyed them all, so I am sure this one will be great also. I have it on my kindle, so will start reading this weekend. (Or maybe tonight!)

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments Oh Cheryl!

I envy you that this is yr 1st read of Sylvester and that you have only read about 3 titles !

Enjoy!

I'm envious, too! But then again, I never get tired of re-reading them...

message 21: by Janhavi (new)

Janhavi (janhavi88) | 165 comments I am not really envious :D I have already read all of them multiple times. If I only discovered them now, I would have missed so many years of enjoying reading and re reading!!!

Yet some how this logic has not convinced me to read the last couple on my TBR- Pistols for Two and Powder and Patches. Nor the mysteries.

The ones I'm not intending to read again are the Great Roxhythe, Helen & My Lord John. I have a copy of Simon the Coldheart but I'm unlikely to reread that.

& after Helen I'm not going to seek out her other "contemporaries!"

message 23: by MaryC (new)

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments Several of you have mentioned audio versions of GH's boooks, and I wonder whether anyone has an audio version of The Unknown Ajax that she would be willing to lend.

message 24: by Janhavi (new)

Janhavi (janhavi88) | 165 comments I have the Audible version, so its not lendable, but just had to stop and say its fantastic! Especially Hugo's voice with all the slipping in and out of broad Yorkshire speech.

message 25: by Mary (new)

Mary (marygoblue) | 25 comments Perhaps your public library might have the audio version you could check out.

message 26: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (auntec) | 5 comments I am about 1/2 way through the book and I am enjoying it so, so much!! It kind of reminds me of Pride and Prejudice. I can't wait to finish it (darn work!). It will have to be my beach read this weekend.

And I'm hoping, so that I can be jealous, that you're actually on a beach! Everything reads better outside.
