TheFoe | 2647 comments Off topic, haven't been that impressed with this years music. I haven't heard anything yet that's really blown me away. Nearly all my upcoming nominations for the Cream of 2021 are slow, steady songs, nothing massively exciting. I must be getting old. ;-)

Me neither, Foe. The best stuff I've heard so far has been archival releases & reissues.

On a related note...

A Place To Bury Strangers have a new EP, "Hologram", out on the 16th July - https://aplacetoburystrangers.bandcam...
Their last album was v disappointing and this doesn't sound much better :-(
(Well, maybe a litte bit better, these two songs have grown on me slightly since I first heard them.)

End Of The Night - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YNfVssP...

I Might Have - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O-wde7I...
I expected them to start going "woohoo", à la Blur's "Song 2", at the beginning of this one.

Craig White | 6727 comments "I must be getting old"

me too, but i don't think that's got much to do with it - most modern music is just sound for the sake of it, there's no edge, belief or urgency....just sterile copies of copies of templates of ideas all nicely recorded and blander than a blandery - i blame coldplay and oasis for this mass acceptance of meagre fodder. i could probably name no more than 7 outfits still 'on the go' that are worth paying attention to. i have nothing more for the 'cream off' thread (yes, i know there's an extra f, go figure!) unless we see some action from,
nick cave and........ - it will only be me excited by that
kraftwerk - not very likely (18 years and counting)
misty in roots - not very likely (19 years and counting)
lee scratch perry - who knows?
the pop group - on/off, not likely
vin gordon - who knows?
chris carter/cosey fanni tutti - nowt in the pipeline
'n' that's about it!

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Incoming!

Another book is on it's way - Paint My Name In Black And Gold: The Rise Of The Sisters Of Mercy.

"Leeds, 1980. From the chaos of the city's vibrant post-punk scene emerges an unlikely band of young men who will, over the next five years, go on to invent goth as we know it and change the course of rock music forever, before blowing apart spectacularly on the verge of stardom. This is the story of the rise of the Sisters of Mercy.

It focuses on the Sisters' two classic line-ups: Andrew Eldritch on vocals, Craig Adams on bass, Gary Marx and Ben Gunn - and later Wayne Hussey - on guitars, and a drum machine called Doktor Avalanche. Hussey and Adams were hard-living road dogs with fascinating musical back-stories; neither Gunn nor Marx were natural rock 'n' roll animals, but the latter performed with such abandon that it was hard to believe he also wrote the Sisters' most delicate and beautiful songs. Lead singer Eldritch was the most peculiar and compelling of them all, a singular and mesmerising amalgam of T.S. Eliot and David Bowie: in the period covered by this book, he staked a powerful claim to be the greatest rock star of his generation. Drawing on dozens of interviews with band members and key figures in the Sisters' journey, Paint My Name in Black and Gold is the definitive account of how - against the odds and all reasonable expectation - these men came to make transcendent and life-altering music.

It is also about the glorious stupidity of being in a Leeds rock band in the early eighties, with tales involving a milk float, a hibernating snake, a wardrobe in a tree, an amyl nitrate-soaked effects pedal and the inopportune consumption of Dutch hash cake."

No idea what it's like. Hope it's better than their last one.

TheFoe | 2647 comments That's the trouble with Clan Of Xymox, they are a bit hit and miss. Truth be told, I only own one of theirs which is the first one, 'Clan Of Xymox', although I do check out their other releases from time to time. I always think the vocals are a bit fey for my liking.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments TheFoe wrote: "That's the trouble with Clan Of Xymox, they are a bit hit and miss."

Yes, you're right, they are. Reminds me of a review I read last year of their last album. Some quotes from it:-

"The story on Clan of Xymox has been largely the same for the last several releases. While the gloomy darkwave act helmed by Ronny Moorings will still occasionally come through with a track that speaks to their legendary status, most of their modern material is okay but largely inessential. Spider on the Wall, their 11th LP since Ronny rebooted the project in the late 90s doesn’t buck that trend at all; diminishing returns are still the order of the day, with the occasional glimmer of their faded brilliance as a reward for dutifully checking in on them."

"At some point Ronny will compile a best of the 2000s CoX release that will be more enjoyable than any of the LPs it draws from."

Ouch. But true.

Glad yours arrived too. Been listening to mine again this afternoon.

Yes, handwarmers in August. It's not a fashion statement or because I live in Scotland (we do have summer here too - it's 23°C at this very moment ;-) ). I have v bad Reynaud's disease & my hands are icy cold a lot of the time, all year round.
