Yeh, there are some ace ones on there. I was rooting for the cute spider. Love his goooogly eyes.

Aaw, thanks Foe. I know you don't always have time to post comments in response to stuff, so thanks for that.

I was watching an old TOTP the other night and the Sisters popped up (followed by Cliff. Only on TOTP eh?!) Nice shirt Bruno. - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NafWJoW...

I've always quite liked the flowery shirt and longish hair of that phase of Eldritch. The music, not so much :-(

Edit: Btw, nice new pic. I like it when people post photos, even if it's just boring stuff like pictures of their shoes ;-)

TheFoe | 2646 comments Agree about the music Helen, Vision Thing verged a little bit too much on bog standard rock for my liking, I prefer their earlier stuff, slow ploddy and gloomy.

Thought it was about time I changed my profile photo, though miss the days when I had long black hair. :-(

As bad as this is, and let's face it, it sucks balls, it reinforces my view that 'Vision Thing' was just a soft rock album, nothing more nothing less. It's also why it rarely gets a listen by me.

Not a darkwave or goth song, but one I enjoyed from last year.

Rats On Rafts - 'A Trail Of Wind & Fire'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFHvH...

And a song that, ironically sounds like 'Temple Of Love'

Eyes Of The Nightmare Jungle - 'Shadow Dance'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQm_B...

message 911: by Helen The Melon (new)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Yeh, I hardly ever listen to Vision Thing either. I think Sera appreciates it more than we do?

The Rats on Rafts song reminds me of something but I can't think what. Something by Foals maybe, not sure, memory not working as usual :-(

I've always liked Shadow Dance even if it is derivative cheesy goth. But, you can have a good dance to it (& sing along if you do that sort of thing) & it's catchy as hell!

Craig White | 6727 comments i know very little of tsom after 'floodland', but the totp clip for 'more' sucks hugely. i see eldritch was suffering from 'astbury syndrome' at the time, the 'i so much wanna be a huge RAWK star' condition that so many previously decent to brilliant bands got infected with. another strain of the disease is 'gillespie's mainstream peculiarity'.

I like this bit v much - "another strain of the disease is 'gillespie's mainstream peculiarity'." Hee hee.

Amongst Sisters fans, the topic of Vision Thing is definitely divisive. I wouldn't miss it if it went awol from my collection. The Blogging Goth (Tim, a huge Sisters fan) wrote an interesting piece on it last year (he loves it) - https://theblogginggoth.com/2020/10/2...

Excerpt: "Approaching Vision Thing can be a challenge – do we take it as read that it was Andrew Eldritch’s ongoing parody of rock’n’roll, now embracing the gung-ho faux metal style of the late Eighties? Early guitarist Ben Gunn scorned the Paramount Leader’s attitude of 'taking the piss' and departed in 1983, so was he onto something?

Is Vision Thing a subtle and wry jab in the kidneys to the American Dream of George H.W. Bush’s neocon United States? Or is it a cynical move to appeal to the burgeoning American market from a jaded mastermind exercising complete creative control?"

I think that Irish TV one must be doing the rounds, Foe. The YouTube algorithm spewed it out into my recommendations a month or two ago.

It also showed me this cringey one from '85, TVAM Star Date, with some really dreadful interviewer, Ian Astbury, Buster Bloodvessel & Blancmange - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VtpVnYp...

Sorry, it's not v interesting it just stuck in my v poor memory 'cos of the bizarre combo of guests.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Random question/topic...your thoughts on The Rose of Avalanche?

I was thinking about '80s notgothgoth bands from Leeds (after nominating The March Violets on Val's theme thread). Out of the main Leeds bands I think The Rose of Avalanche are the only ones I've never bothered exploring, don't know why. It looks like CD versions of their albums are not cheap anyway, most of their discography seems to be only accessible on vinyl.

Amazon have this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/L-Rain-Expli...

I had a blind spot for them back in the day. I bought everything i could find by them even though i knew i'd probably be disappointed. So much promise and so much disappointment. Never Another Sunset or LA Rain: The Singles would be the best place to start. They're a Stooges, drone, dark wave type band that always, always left a nagging feeling that they should be better than they were.

Thanks Sera, that's helpful. There's not much of their stuff on Spotify for me to research so I thought I'd ask on here. It sounds like I might be disappointed by them anyway so they are being moved to the bottom of my list for now. More enjoyable things I need to spend my musicmoney on ;-)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments I was wandering around sort-of not quite awake and yet not asleep and was mostly lost in the moment of checking over and de-misting all of the Pot Plants in the early hours of this morning when a Programme all about Siouxsie & The Banshees came on the Radio.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01n...

I can't say that I really took much of it all in - but what I heard of it made for interesting enough listening all the same - and so I shall definitely have to have a re-listen to it over the next few days ;o> ...

'Spellbound, Siouxsie & The Banshees' ... Radio 4 Extra ...

"As the bright white heat of punk faded few bands survived and emerged from the aftermath, stronger and more unique than Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Led by the unmistakable force of Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin, the Banshees carved a musical legacy that is without parallel.

Originally meeting as part of the 'Bromley Contingent' that gravitated around punk pioneers The Sex Pistols, Susan Janet Ballion met Steven Bailey at a Roxy Music concert at Wembley in 1975, bonding over suburban boredom, a love of Bowie, Hitchcock and 'Cabaret' style nocturnal fun.

Armed with a handful of ideas, suburban isolation, borrowed equipment, the duo entered the furnace of punk intent on smashing down the established musical order and sculpting a dark and alluring legacy.

Miranda Sawyer talks to Siouxsie about the legendary gig at the infamous 100 Club as well as her and Steven Severin's part in TV folklore by appearing on the Today show where the Sex Pistol's Steve Jones and John 'Rotten' Lydon' swore at presenter Bill Grundy revealing to the nation the filth and the fury of punk rock.

Through Banshee's biographer and fan Mark Paytress, journalist Alexis Petridis and acclaimed producer Nigel Gray, Sawyer unearths how the band quickly bolted from the fading spark of punk and carved out an unparalleled legacy of five albums in five years.

From 1978's stark, Velvet Underground inspired 'The Scream' through band fall-outs, commercial and critical success, to the neo-psychedelic, post punk of 'Kaleidoscope', the hugely influencial dark wave 'JuJu' and the quixotic, exotic and erotic and 'A Kiss in the Dreamhouse' this a unique insight into a genre and era defying band"

(Producer: James Roberts ... First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in Oct 2012)

I love watching these, Helen - although it sometimes completely throws me when I suddenly come to realise just how long ago it was when I was first watching all of these Bands performing on these TOTP shows.

It makes me feel a lot older than I actually am sometimes - but also makes me feel rather special and blessed too because I'm SO very glad that I was a part of a Generation that got to watch Shows like these ... before there was ever anything else that was anything quite like it ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Yeah, I don't know if there was anything new being said, but it was a very pleasant surprise to suddenly be hearing something a bit different than just another episode of a Play or a Short Story that I had very likely already heard several times before.

I had to keep the Volume right down on the Radio though because it was somewhere around 3am and I had to keep on with going in and out of the Kitchen carrying Pot Plants - so I didn't get to hear it all or to take all that much in at the time ;o>
